PASTORAL MESSAGE The name St John Chrysostom is in no way foreign to the average Orthodox Christian. Most likely we know him as the one who composed the prayers of the Divine Liturgy which the Church celebrates most Sundays. But beyond that fact, and the familiarity of his name, what of St John Chrysostom do we really know? His feastday in the middle of this month (Nov 13 th ) provides us a great opportunity to learn about his life and find within it examples which we can apply to ourselves today. In particular, I would like to look at how St John both became a priest and then later the Archbishop of Constantinople. St John Chrysostom lived in the late 4 th century in Antioch before becoming Archbishop of Constantinople, from where he was exiled at the end of his life for criticizing the immoral behavior of the imperial family. He was well known even from his school days as one of the most eloquent speakers in the world. His strong embrace of monastic life coupled with his talent for public speaking lead to St. John being ordained a priest in Antioch. His ordination however did not come about how one might expect. When he first learned that they bishop wanted to ordain him, St. John secretly snuck out of his home leaving a friend inside. A mob of Churchmen appeared at his home and led his friend away to be ordained. Although St. John Chrysostom avoided ordination at this point, he couldn t hide from it forever. Eventually he was ordained to the priesthood. After continuing to grow his fame because of his zealous preaching for Christ, he was kidnapped by members of the Church of Constantinople and smuggled there from his home in Antioch to become the new Archbishop of Constantinople. What I would like to highlight about St John Chrysostom is the way in which God s will was accomplished in his life, even though he fought against it at first. In each case, his ordination to the priesthood and his becoming an Archbishop, St John initially resisted the path set in front of him by God. Yet, this resistance did not last long in his heart as he embraced the role and life that God had set in front of him, regardless of his initial hesitation. If St John Chrysostom had his way, he would have continued to live his whole life as a monk outside Antioch as he had when he was a young man. Instead, seeing the Will of God laid out in front of him, he conformed his life and actions to that will in place of his own. There are often times in our lives when what we desire, or the path that we have imagined for ourselves is pulled out from under us. Or more properly speaking, there are times when God shows us that the path we are on is not what he intends for us and he points us in another direction. We might be unwilling at first to walk down the new path that is set before us. But then we remember that Christ prayed in the garden that this cup might pass from him, yet not as he wills but as His Father willed. Likewise we see that same spirit in St John Chrysostom, who sought a different life in the Church, yet was an exemplary priest and Bishop because God made it known to him that this was His will. Such actions of St. John Chrysostom, and the prayer of Christ in the garden before his Crucifixion not my will, but your will be done seem to be at odds with how we see the world today. But we must remember that if we allowed our will to be done, in place of the will of God, not only would we not have great saints like St John Chrysostom, but we would be without the salvation brought by Christ through His crucifixion and resurrection. + Fr. Panagiotis

Parish Council News November 2017 As usual this fall period has been very active at SS Peter & Paul. In late September, the Orthodox Couples Club (OCC) had its annual kickoff event at Curragh, an Irish pub in The Glen. Over 100 parishioners attended including many long time members as well as new members and ranging in age from those in their 20 s to those in their 70 s. A great time was had by all as we caught up with old friends and met new ones. The OCC will be hosting the first of our small group sessions early this month. These small scale, casual social gatherings will be hosted by several of our OCC members in their homes with dessert and coffee/drinks. Email sspp.occ@gmail.com to be added to a small group it s an easy and fun way to create new friendships at the church. The Outreach Ministry continued last month to keep busy with several events providing sack lunches and soup kitchen at Evanston churches for the poor. If you are not already part of this ministry, it is a great opportunity for you to volunteer just a couple hours a month to fulfill your 10 + 2 stewardship commitment. Just email sspp.outreach@gmail.com. On Sunday November 12 will be the fall Parish Assembly meeting immediately following the liturgy. Please plan to attend as it will give you an opportunity to learn what is being planned for the church during the coming year, a review of the 2018 budget and other operating issues. This assembly will also give you an opportunity to voice your recommendations for achieving our strategic planning goals of a more welcoming parish, worship and learn together, and minister to the needs of our members. We have over 25 active ministries here at SS Peter & Paul, and one of them is the Parish Council. As you saw in a recent mailing, we are accepting nominations for the parish council so if you are looking to become more active and have a voice on the future of the church, please submit your application by November 6, 2017. We are always welcome to new parish council members with new ideas. Hope to see you participate in one or more ministries in addition to our Sunday liturgy. Yours in Christ, George P. Nassos Parish Council President
