ONLY ONE THING Martha, you are anxious and worried about many things. There is need of only one thing. Mary has chosen the better part and it will not be taken from her. -Luke 10:42 I don t know about you, but if someone tells me that there s only one thing that I need to infinitely improve my life, I m either extremely intrigued or I know I m watching an infomercial. But unlike that infomercial that will change your life forever, the one thing that the Lord is speaking of here takes work to obtain; it takes prayer, and it takes willpower, and it takes faith. Trusting in the Lord, putting our lives in his hands, is not something we do willingly in today s world. We are told we must be self reliant, strong, the authority in our own lives. but he said to me, My grace is sufficient for you, for power is made perfect in weakness. So, I will boast all the more gladly of my weaknesses, so that the power of Christ may dwell in me. What? Boast in weakness? You read that right. St. Paul is boasting in his lack of self-sufficiency. He s praising his inability to do anything outside of the Lord and his grace. We can do nothing without God. Indeed, without his providence, we would actually cease to be. Your eyes reading this, your lungs breathing, your heart beating all of it is willed into existence every moment of every day. Everything you see, from your children s faces to the oaks trees blowing in the wind, all of it would simply stop being were it not for the Lord. So yes, we should indeed boast in our weaknesses. Because by doing so, we remember that it is not us that the world relies on to keep spinning. It is the all-powerful God who rules the universe, who takes us into his loving arms and breathes life into our lungs, who does all things, and does them perfectly. Can we imperfect humans truly think ourselves beyond him?

ANNOUNCEMENTS Bread or Stones Campaign Houma Listening Post The well-being of Louisiana s children is our moral responsibility. Jesus asks: is there anyone among you who, if your child asks for bread, will give a stone? (Matthew 7:9). How are we answering Jesus question? For over 25 years Louisiana has ranked 49 th in the nation for child well-being. But our churches are now committed to raising that ranking. The Diocese of Houma-Thibodaux is part of a newly formed Bread or Stones Campaign, bringing together Catholic and Protestant churches to improve our children s lives. You are invited to represent our church at the first public meeting in Louisiana of the Bread or Stones Campaign. Join us at the 1 st United Methodist Church in Houma on Tuesday, July 12 th at 5:30 PM to learn about this effort. For more information contact Robert D.
