I haven t written in a while about parish improvements, not because there are none but because there are so many small ones. As Holy Apostles Parish, we now have multiple buildings and grounds to maintain and trying to prioritize is sometimes a challenge. As you can imagine, there are many issues with large buildings, especially with the roofs and water. The maintenance crew does a great job at keeping up with them but sometimes to the expense of not being able to address other things. Jeff and Len work closely with me to create a to-do list of minor improvements and repairs when necessary in the church buildings. We also look at the areas that are or can be utilized the most by our parish organizations and try to make improvements there as well. The reality is that we just cannot do everything that is needed or wanted. As we continue in the On Mission study for our area, we need to try and maintain what we have as it is, but we cannot undertake any major repairs or renovations to any of our buildings not knowing the outcome of the diocesan study. I am asking for your continued trust, patience and support as we keep moving forward following the Holy Spirit s lead. Most importantly, I ask for your prayers for me and for one another. Just so you know, we currently own and maintain the following as Holy Apostles Parish. St. Albert the Great is the church, the parish center/school building, the small garage, the large parking lot and a great deal of land around it all. St. Basil is the church, the rectory, the small garage behind the rectory, the parking lot next to the rectory and the yard in the back of the church. St. Wendelin is the church, the cemetery, the large parking lot, the small garage, and half of the drive and parking between the old school and church. St. Norbert is the church, the upper parking lot, the hill side to the right of the church, the street in front of and beside the church. (The school building, the rectory and one third of the upper parking lot is still under agreement to be sold.) St. Johh Vianney Cemetery and all small structures within the cemetery. PLEASE KNOW that the cemetery is selfsufficient, and requires no money from the parish to operate. John Nuener and his crew do an outstanding job in operating and maintaining the cemetery. Also remember that the operations of both St. Wendelin and St. John Vianney Cemeteries will be taken over by the diocese sometime this fall and will no longer be the responsibility of the parish. Good Bye Seminarian John! This is Seminarian John Furgeson s last weekend with us. John will be returning to St. Paul Seminary to continue his discernment and studies. It was great having John be with us over the summer and I ask you to wish him well and keep in your prayers. May God Bless You! Fr. Steve Celebrations of Life s Journey Together we welcome Alivia Justice and Corey Michael Mesina And all children who were baptized into our faith & Family Congratulations to the Parents & Godparents If you need to prepare for the baptism of your infant, and you have not had the preparation seminar, please contact Deacon Mike at (412) 884-7744, extension 206 to schedule a time. The time it takes is 45 minutes to one hour. We will work to schedule a time that is convenient for both mom and dad to attend. Sponsors are also welcome. If you already have had the training, just call Deacon Mike and he will get you on the schedule for your Please remember members of our parishes who are in nursing homes, the homebound, the sick and their caregivers in your prayers. May God s mercy shine on them. Our sympathy is extended to the families of: Grant to Them O Lord, And Let Perpetual Light shine on Them.

By Stephanie Logue Gratitude Another past homily resonated with me (See, Father Steve and Fr. Levi? Someone is listening). It was about prayer and how often we ask God for things vs. how often we thank Him when our prayers are answered. It s probably just human nature, but we are quicker to ask than to thank and quicker to complain than to praise. How many times have we been unhappy with a product and whipped out a letter or email complaining to the company? Yet, how often do we write when we re pleased? Years ago, I wrote to a local company telling them how much we enjoyed their product. About a week later, I received a call from a company representative thanking me for my letter and telling me how much they appreciate positive comments. A few days later, we came home from work to find a large box on our porch filled with about a dozen cartons of the product. I certainly never expected a reward for writing a letter. The same goes with service if we experience bad service at a restaurant, we re quick to march over to a manager to complain. But, when the service is exceptional, do we do anything more than leave a larger tip? It doesn t take long to seek out that manager to tell them how pleased you were. Did you ever meet a person who, no matter how many blessings they have in their life, constantly dwells on the negative? I ve been guilty of this. Ten years ago when my dad died, in my grief, I asked God, Why did you take him from us so soon? Meanwhile, my dad was just shy of his 88 th birthday! I immediately changed my tone and thanked God for letting us have him as long as we did. It s easy to ask God for things we want. No doubt, He s bombarded with requests 24/7. Just imagine how pleased He must be when we take those extra few minutes to thank Him. SAFE ENVIRONMENT PROGRAM We will be offering Mandatory Reporters Live training sessions at the parish office building at St. Albert site on the following dates. Wednesday, August 23, 2017 6 PM to 9 PM. Saturday, August 26, 2017 10 AM to 1 PM This is for all adult volunteers or employees of the diocese ( this includes anyone over the age of 18 ). Mandatory Reporters training is State Mandated, it shows you what to look for, how to report it and who are mandated reporters. There are only 50 openings for each session, you can contact the office and I will register you or on line at Diopitt.org. Gilmary Council #3868 Grand Knight Bernard Komoroski (412-381-7175) MUSIC MINISTRY OPEN HOUSE Under the leadership of the Pastor and clergy, the music ministry forms an integral part of Holy Apostles Parish. As we continue the strong tradition of liturgical and sacred music at all four Parish churches to build an inspirational music program that complements and enhances the worship experience, we are reaching out to cantors, choir members, and instrumentalists, as well as to all other members of the congregation and the Parish community, to come to the Music Ministry Open House Day on August 19 and 26. This event is scheduled to take place on Saturday afternoons between 1:00 and 3:00 (Music Ministry Office in the Faith Formation Building). We hope you consider this time to learn more about the Parish music ministry, or audition to sing in the Parish choir or serve as one of our cantors. Note that if you have been associated with the choir in the past, this audition is still required should you wish to join the choir again this Fall. Yearly Mission Appeal This week we welcome Fr. Faustine who will be sharing his story about the Diocese of Moshi in Tanzania, Africa. Fr. Faustine will celebrate 4:00PM mass at St. Albert and the 9:00AM and 11:30 AM masses Sunday. The second collections at all masses will be for the benefit of his mission appeal. The Diocese of Moshi works to minister to the children with special needs, more specifically, the albino children. The goal is to build a school. The name of the school will be St. Pamachius Secondary school. The children born with albinism are neglected because of their disability. Albinism is a rare trait caused because a body lacks tyrosinase, an enzyme that contains copper that is responsible for the body s production of melanin. Melanin is the dark pigment that gives color to the skin and gets darker in the sun. Think of sun tanning. The albinos suffer persecution by a wrong belief that their body parts are associated with luck and therefore they sometimes they have their body parts cut sometimes leading to death. The entire country has no such a school to minister to children with this disability therefore the bishop of Moshi realized that having a school for them will help them and teach them how to manage in life. The societies in Africa still think that disability is a curse. Educating them will help by taking away such myth. The buildings are ready but now the need is for equipment such as wheelchairs, desks chairs and basic equipment. Thank You for your support and prayers to the albino children with special needs.

FESTIVAL OF PRAISE There has been interest expressed for starting a Nar-Anon family group. The best way to explain what Nar-Anon is or does is to present the Nar-Anon mission statement: Nar-Anon Family Groups are a worldwide fellowship for those affected by someone else s addiction. As a twelve step program, we offer our help by sharing our experience, strength, and hope. Nar-Anon is a twelve step program for families and friends of addicts. Our next meeting will be Monday August 7,,2017, at the Holy Apostles Parish, St. Albert s church, in the chapel. We will begin at 6:30 pm. If you have been affected by someone else s addiction, as the mission statement says, please join us. We maintain anonymity for the sake of all. For more detailed information please check the Nar-Anon website at: http://www.nar-anon.org Pre-Cana Preparation The Diocesan mandated pre-cana marriage preparation course will be held at Holy Apostles Parish, in the Faith Formation Building, on September 15 and 16 (Friday and Saturday). Registration is required with a fee of $60.00 to cover books and other expenses. Please contact the Church office at 412-884-7744 X 206 to register. The Faith Formation Building is the former Bishop McDowell School located on the St. Albert the Great Church campus. This is located in Baldwin, at 3198 Schieck St, just off Glass Run Rd. The Holy Apostles Parish is a newly formed parish from the merger of several other parishes in the South Hills: St. Albert the Great, St. Basil, St. Norbert, St. Wendelin, and some of St. John Vianney.
