St. Francis of Assisi Parish Teutopolis, Illinois page 2 Most Holy Trinity In broadcasting this year's Packers-Steelers Super Bowl game, FOX Sports rejected a thirty-second ad featuring the Scripture citation, John 3:16. The citation periodically pops up on signs held by fans in end zone shots, even though television networks are getting skilled at eliminating such scenes from their broadcasts. The ad rejected by FOX Sports did appear in the Washington, DC and Birmingham, Alabama markets just before the fourth quarter. A close-up of a defensive player's face after a tackle shows the Scripture citation painted on his eye black. Even with that limited exposure, enough people logged in that the Internet traffic crashed the sponsor's Web site. As we celebrate the feast of the Most Holy Trinity this weekend, we hear the actual text to which the citation refers: "God so loved the world that he gave his only Son, so that everyone who believes in him might not perish but might have eternal life." The life of the Holy Trinity is one of pure and total love. That is the love we are celebrating today: complete and unconditional, sacrificial and eternal. We could emulate the zeal of those who are so intent on proclaiming John 3:16 at every opportunity, but not necessarily their methods. Holding up signs at football games or producing a commercial may entice the curious, but these actions don't necessarily lead to lifelong conversion. But if people see in our way of living the example of love that is lived within the Trinity, then people will be attracted naturally to the faith. While we may consider the Trinity an abstraction about God, it is really an expression of the deepest love, love so intense that the three persons- Father, Son, and Holy Spirit-are one. Our own human love will never be that complete, but if we strive for that in our own lives others will come to share in what we believe. 2011 Liturgical Publications Inc RCIA A new group has formed. If you or anyone you know has expressed an interest in checking out what the Catholic Church teaches please contact Sr. Pierre for more information. 857-6404 ext. 227 There are no commitments, no pressure, just information. Congratulations St. Francis Parish received notification that we are in compliance with the diocesan policy regarding the training of adults and children with the Protecting God s Children programs. Thank you to all of you who put our children s safety first. Discovering Franciscan Spirituality For some reason it seems to take very little effort for one to see that the other person needs to improve or make a change. We might even consult with another or others to check if anyone else agrees with us. On the other hand, if one looks into a mirror and says a prayer such as, O God, help me know You; help me know myself; with God s grace, an open heart, an open mind, and human effort, the self may get some leads as to where personal changes in the right direction are needed. The sacrament of reconciliation is available to provide assistance. Secular Franciscans are not claiming to be perfect people. Yet, the fact that The Order has been around for over 800 years shows that its structure has been tested and found to be true. Catholics who are 18 years of age or older and are active in the church are invited to an inquiry gathering at St. Clare Hall in Teutopolis on June 21st at 6:00 pm. Mass begins at 7:00 pm in St. Francis Church. For more information phone Father Ken at 217-857-6404 or Jim Weis at 217-857-3491. Q. If we share the same faith as other Christians, does it really matter where we worship or what church we go to? After all, it is the same God. A. Assuming that faith is our relationship with God, let's make this same argument with a different type of relationship. If you believe in marriage, and share that same belief with others, then it should not matter whom you are married to. After all, every marriage has the same obligations. Obviously, this does not make sense. How we express our love-or faith-has an effect on our relationship. If a young man is in love with a woman, saying "I love you" leaves a particular impression and affects the relationship differently than if he had written it in a card, or sang a song. The same can be said of faith. How we express our faith (religion) has an effect on our faith (relationship with God), as does the community with whom we worship. Their beliefs influence how they see the world around them. Some Christian churches, lacking a central set of beliefs or a teaching authority, have lost a sense of what they believe. How we worship and what we teach is as important as our end goal of giving honor and praise to God. But we should not confuse the two. Each one affects the other. 2009 Liturgical Publications Inc

School Sisters of Notre Dame 150th Anniversary It was on December 7, 1861, that the first group of Notre Dame nuns arrived from Germany to begin their teaching profession in the Teutopolis community and the surrounding areas. Although their presence is not as numerous as it was in those early years, the School Sisters of Notre Dame nuns are still a formidable part of our religious life and community experiences. A celebration is planned for October 9, 2011, which includes a Mass, sit-down meal, and open house. Former nuns stationed at the mother house in St. Louis and elsewhere will be in attendance. A bus trip to St. Louis to visit the mother house and their homes for the elderly and retired sisters is being discussed and will be decided and announced at a later date. More information regarding all the celebrations will be forth-coming in the weeks ahead. Reminder: Baby Bottles are due this weekend. If you forgot, please return them next weekend. Just what do you know of how Father s Day got started? I went on-line to discover quite the story. This day was begun in early 20 th century (1910) to compliment Mother s Day. Sonora Dodd of Spokane, Washington wanted a day to celebrate fathers, especially her own. She organized a group of YMCA persons who went to church wearing a red rose for a living father, a white rose for a deceased father. She later went through town in a horse-drawn carriage carrying gifts to shut-in fathers confined indoors by illness. Not much happened regarding the making of this day more than just a local celebration until 1913 when a bill was introduced to Congress for the national recognition of the holiday. It did not pass. President Woodrow Wilson wanted to officially make it a national holiday but Congress resisted. Several attempts after that all failed. In 1966 President Lyndon B. Johnson issued the first presidential proclamation honoring fathers designating the 3 rd Sunday in June as Father s Day. In 1972 President Richard Nixon made it a permanent holiday. According to the telephone industry this is the busiest day of the year for collect calls. So, don t just read this, get on the phone and call your dad, grandfather, great-grandfather. Give them a gift of your time, send them a card, roses would be nice (be sure to tell them the connection with the rose). For all dads living and deceased who influenced us by example, words and actions have a blessed day and enjoy yourselves! How Fathers Mature 4 years: My Daddy can do anything. 6 years: My Daddy knows a whole lot. 12 years: Dad doesn t know everything. 14 years: Dad doesn t know anything. 16 years: That man lives to make me miserable. 25 years: The old man is OK. 30 years: I wonder what Dad s opinion is about this. 35 years: I want Dad s opinion about this. 50 years: I wish I could get Dad s opinion about this. Father's Day Prayer God our Father, you govern and protect your people and shepherd them with a father's love. You place a father in a family as a sign of your love, care, and constant protection. May fathers everywhere be faithful to the example shown in the Scriptures: steadfast in love, forgiving transgressions, sustaining the family, caring for those in need. Give your wisdom to fathers that they may encourage and guide their children. Keep them healthy so they may support a family. Guide every father with the Spirit of your love that they may grow in holiness and draw their family ever closer to you. Amen.
