Communion of Saints 5. From the same root as catechism, this refers to those preparing for baptism through a process of initiation. Catechumens Church Words 1. Rules C H A L L E N G E G A M E JEOPARDY-STYLE VERSION RULES & PROCEDURES My games are set up to take place in two rounds over two class periods. The purpose of the game is to review in a way that involves and motivates the students to learn the material while also encouraging team skills and other abilities. The following set-up puts in place ways to earn points toward the test in order to help achieve these goals. Set Up Using colored chalks, draw a game grid on the board with one square each for every category. [Usually seven or eight provide enough material for a one hour class.] Write the categories into these squares. Draw five squares beneath each category. Fill in from the top down with dollar amounts (100, 200, 300, 400, 500 for the first round of the game on the first day; 200, 400, 600, 800, 1000 for the second day Double Jeopardy Round). Identify on top of the game board the subject of this game. Divide the class into teams. This is usually best done by dividing the regular seating plan in half. For each team, choose two people to do the following: A recorder, who will write down the names of everyone on his team and record one tick mark next to their name for every correct answer they come up with, even if it was only within the discussion. A spokesperson, who will be responsible for giving the official answers of the team after discussion. A board person to maintain the game board & keep score in dollar amounts on the board so a winner can be determined. (It should be noted that many students in this role have used it to express themselves artistically with the chalk and that seems to be a desirable thing in most cases.) For Double Jeopardy round, someone should be assigned to watch a clock & stop the game 5 minutes before the end of the period (in order that the Final Jeopardy Question can be done completely). Game Play Invite the first person on the first team to select a category & dollar amount. Twenty seconds or thirty seconds should be given to answer, with a warning given before the end: "Ten seconds left" or "Five seconds left. (Some questions or some group discussions may demand that more time is given, but continue to give the warning before the end, so fairness is ensured.) Read the clue that corresponds to that square on the board. If that person gets the answer, the board person records that dollar amount on

the board for that team & that team s recorder writes a mark on his record for that player. If the original respondent to the question gets it wrong, the question goes over to the second team; everyone on that team should then consult together. Once an answer is agreed upon, the spokesperson reports it to the teacher. If the answer is right, the board person records that dollar amount for the second team & the team recorder puts down a mark for whomever in the group came up with the answer. If more than one person came up with the answer, give the point to the person who has the fewest points. Only one mark should be awarded for each question. If the answer for the second team is wrong, however, the chance to answer the question reverts one last time to the original team. This time they should consult and give an answer to the spokesperson. If they get it right, the board person and recorder mark it down as noted above. If the original team does not get it right this time, no one gets the dollar amount and the item is erased from the game board. After the first question is answered or forfeited, the next opportunity is given to the first player on the second team, who alone must answer the question once more. Then the same procedure for giving answers is followed. Then the second player on the first team is allowed to choose, then the second player on the second team, etc. Play alternates in this way until all the clues are used up, or the period ends, or it is time for the Final Jeopardy Question at the end of the Double Jeopardy Round. Once the Double Jeopardy Round is completed, or time to stop play has been announced by your appointed timekeeper: - announce the Final Jeopardy Category - make sure the ending dollar amounts have been calculated on the board - have each team consult and write a wager on a piece of paper to give to the teacher - with wagers in hand, the teacher reads the final clue aloud; each team consults and writes their answer on the recorder s sheet - the answers are given to the teacher; he announces the correct answer - if the team s answer is correct the amount of the wager is added to their score; if incorrect, the amount of the wager is subtracted {this is the only time in the game when subtractions take place in my version of Jeopardy} - final dollar amounts are tabulated - announce the winners!! Try to end the game in enough time so that the usual seating plan format may be restored for the next

class. The teacher may use the results to award bonus points on the corresponding test in the way that he/she thinks best. Have fun!
