1 Grade 5 Lesson 10 Key Points Lent Catholics believe in the Real Presence, which is the Body, Blood, Soul, and Divinity of Jesus in the Eucharist. The Communion of Saints is everyone who follows Jesus, whether they are on Earth, or in Purgatory or Heaven. Liturgy of the Word at Mass Materials Lenten Plan JEOPARDY Catechist Prayer before the lesson: Jesus, strengthen my resolve to walk with you during the Lenten season; to practice prayer, fasting, and almsgiving; and to abstain from my own wants in order to better meet the needs of others. Amen. Before the lesson: Hand out the Lenten Plan worksheet for students to start working on before class starts. 1
2 [5 min] Invite Time for Change (p. 25) Ask the students if there is anything they would like to pray for. Pray the Memorare. Read the prayer and Scripture passage on page 25. [10 min] Discover The Forty Days (p. 26) Lent started on Ash Wednesday last week. It is a 40-day period to prepare for Easter by praying, fasting, and almsgiving. Read and discuss Lent on pages 26. [5 min] Lenten Plan Hand out the Lenten Plan worksheet if you didn t hand it out before class. Give the students time to think about what they want to do for Lent, then discuss. o Note: Self-Denial means giving up certain habits or food in order to strengthen our willpower and improve our lives. We give these things up as a sacrifice, which we can offer up as a penance for someone else. [10 min] Discover United in Christ s Body (p ) Catholics believe in the Real Presence, which is the Body, Blood, Soul, and Divinity of Jesus in the Eucharist. The Communion of Saints is everyone who follows Jesus, whether they are on Earth, or in Purgatory or Heaven. Discuss: Are you able to pray at Mass, or do you often get distracted? What can you do to make your experience at Mass more meaningful? [15 min] Discover God Speaks to us (p ) Feel free to take your class into Church when reading about the Liturgy of the Word on pages 236 and 237. Discuss the green box: The Liturgy of the Word. o What do you do in each of these parts? (sit or stand) o What are some of the responses you say during these parts of the Mass? First and Second Readings: Thanks be to God. (After the lector says, The Word of the Lord, after the First and Second readings.) Gospel Reading: And with your Spirit. (After the priest says, The Lord be with you. ) Glory to you, O Lord. (After the priest says, A reading from the holy Gospel according to [Mark]. ) Praise to you, Lord Jesus Christ. (After the priest finishes the Gospel and says, The Gospel of the Lord. ) Prayer of the Faithful: Lord hear our prayer. (After each intercession.) 2
3 [25 min] JEOPARDY Review Game Divide the class into teams to play classroom JEOPARDY on the TV. See the instructions below. Note: These questions will help the students prepare for their ACRE year-end test during the last class in April. Be sure to give hints if the questions are too difficult. [5 min] Sending Closing Prayer Pray the Hail, Holy Queen. Remind the students to read the Family + Faith pages with their parents at home. 3
