News from Father Todd Question of the Week Dear friends, Happy Father s Day to all of our parish dads and grandfathers! Fathers are among the unsung heroes of our world today and we want you to know how much we appreciate you and all the sacrifices that you make for our families. What a special Father s Day this is for Fr. Adam Ahern! With joy we welcome Fr. Adam home to Saint Mark this weekend. These are busy and exciting days for him as he prepares to begin his ministry as Associate Pastor at Our Lady of Perpetual Help Parish in New Albany and Chaplain to the students of Our Lady of Providence High School in Clarksville. We thank Father for allowing us to share in the joy of his ordination this weekend. Please join us after the 11:45 a.m. Mass for a reception in Fr, Adam s honor. Last weekend Deacon Meril Sahayam arrived among us for his summer assignment at St. Mark. He is a special gift to us and we are very grateful for his presence among us. Deacon Meril is from the Diocese of Palayamkottai, India, and is beginning his final year of preparation for the priesthood at Saint Meinrad. While studying in the United States, our neighboring parish of Saint Jude has been Deacon Meril s home parish. Welcome to St. Mark Deacon Meril! Deacon Meril will be participating in our parish s first-ever mission trip this week. Eighteen St. Mark parishioners and five bothers and sisters from Immanuel United Church of Christ will make the trip to Frakes, Kentucky. All of the members of the group will be at the 5:30 p.m. Mass this weekend and our parish community will send them forth with a special blessing prayer. May God bless the members of our Mission Team and may they be a blessing to the people to whom they are sent! This week the priests of the Archdiocese will gather on Tuesday and Wednesday in Bloomington for Priesthood Days. It is an opportunity to welcome the newly-ordained priests into our presbyterate and to celebrate milestones of priests who are marking special anniversaries of ordination this year. It is one of those rare opportunities we have to be together with brother priests and with Archbishop Tobin. Because of Priesthood Days we will Communion Services rather than Mass on Tuesday and Wednesday of this week, but we will have Mass on Monday morning. See you at Mass! Q. What is the Fortnight for Freedom? I saw it advertised in the bulletin from my daughter s church. A. Fortnight for Freedom is an activity sponsored by the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops. It was initiated in 2012 as a time to pray and work to safeguard religious liberty at a time when religious liberty is increasingly under attack in the United States. The bishops invite Catholics throughout the country to spend the fourteen days before our celebration of Independence Day on July 4 reflecting on the First Amendment of the U.S Bill of Rights. That Amendment reads: Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people to peacefully assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances. The Bill of Rights does not prohibit religion, but establishes the right of people to exercise their religious faith not only in the privacy of their homes but also in the public square. In response to those who would re-write American history making of it a history in which religion has no role, the bishops of the United States call upon us to celebrate the place of faith in the founding of our country and in its history. The bishops call upon us to know our first amendment rights and to exercise them. The bishops initiated the Fortnight for Freedom in 2012 as a response to the Health and Human Services mandate that required employers to offer sterilization and abortioninducing drugs as part of all health plans as part of the Affordable Health Care Act. At the same time licenses of Catholic Adoption Agencies in several states were being revoked because of their refusal to place children with same sex-couples and opposite-sex couples who were cohabiting. Here at St. Mark we will celebrate the Fortnight for Freedom by praying a prayer for religious liberty at all of our Masses during the period of the fortnight, June 21- July 4 and on Saturday, July 4, we will hold a special Mass at 9:00 a.m. to celebrate the Fourth of July and to thank God for the freedoms that we are guaranteed by the Bill of Rights and pray for the protection of these sacred freedoms. The theme of this year s Fortnight for Freedom is freedom to witness. The fortnight falls during the celebration of the feasts of several saints who witnessed to their faith to the very end. Among them is Saint Thomas More whose feast is celebrated on June 22. This 16 th century English statesman resisted King Henry VIII s efforts to replace the Pope as the head of the Church in England. He went to his death with these words on his lips, I die the King s good servant, but God s first. Saint Thomas More: Pray for us!
