SHELACH LECHA Shelach Lecha Statistics Mitzvot: 3 of the 613 Mitzvot, 2 positive & 1 prohibition Verses: 119 (21st longest of the 54 Sidrot) Words: 1540 (27th longest) Letters: 5820 (27th longest) Haftarah: 24 verses (25th longest of the 80 Haftarot) BY LAUREN LEVIN The parsha begins with sending spies as a precursor to imminent entry into the Promised Land. Yet it ends with a nation destined to live out their years in the desert. How exactly did they go wrong? Rashi (1040-1105) contends that it was the fact of sending spies that caused their downfall. There was no need to go and check out the land. Rather they should have just trusted in God that it would be wonderful. Ramban (1194-1270) views the mission of the spies as a more pragmatic exercise. Just like an army would check the terrain of any upcoming mission beforehand, so Moses sent spies to check exactly what it was like to enable them to plan their route and military strategy. There was nothing wrong with sending spies per se. The fatal error came after their return, when they said that the task was just too great for them. This is evident from their report We came to the land to which you sent us, and it is flowing with milk and honey However, the people who inhabit the land are mighty In fact, arguably, the only thing that was wrong in their report was one word: however. In that one word they revealed that they had forgotten that God would be with them and protect them. Even if the inhabitants were the offspring of the giant, they should have had faith in the allpowerful God who had promised to deliver them. Sending the spies was not a childish rebellion; it was the first step in a big process of transition. It would have been easier for them just to blindly enter the land of Israel and rely solely on God to give them direction. However this was not to be the way forward. They needed to fend for themselves, fight for themselves, and think for themselves. None of this was possible without the help of God, but they now needed to be tangibly active partners. They could not continue to live a completely sheltered insular life of miracles. This challenge is one that resonates so well with our complex lives today. In the corporate world, we work hard to clinch deals. In the world of politics, we work painstakingly hard at diplomacy. In the domestic sphere, we invest time, energy and money trying to be the best spouses, parents and children possible. Yet, in our spiritual selves we understand that ultimate success in all these arenas is dependent on God. Life would have been simpler if we could have remained the dutiful recipients of manna dropping from the sky daily. Simpler, but far less meaningful. If we were not challenged in our lives by having to strive, achieve and struggle, we would have no room to grow and celebrate our successes.
