33rd Sunday of Ordinary Time Br. Edward van Merrienboer bredward@blsacrament.org What do you want? A classic definition of prayer says that it is raising our mind and heart to God. This definition is really wonderful when you think about it, but the problem is too often, in prayer, we do not do that. We raise our minds to God, but not our hearts. We go to prayer out of duty or to gain some insight, or to find a quiet space in our busy lives. What we can miss is that prayer is a time to experience intimacy, that is, to have our hearts touched and soothed. And yet this is the ultimate function of prayer. What is this intimacy that we are looking for in prayer? Some years ago I read in a book on spiritual growth a myth that illustrates my point. According to the story at the time of our first existence God kissed us and throughout our lives we have a deep memory of that kiss. The story might not be true but we all have a place in our hearts where we hold all that is most precious and sacred to us. It is a place that we guard from others and only share parts of it with those we trust. It is the place where we have a sense that God is with us. It is there that we bear the image of God. The image of God inside of us is not to be thought of as some beautiful icon stamped inside of the soul. No, the image of God in us is the energy that makes us seek goodness and truth. There are times that we know in our hearts that something is good but can t quiet explain it to ourselves much less others. The expression that something touched my heart captures that deep inner part of us that is the spirit of God. Karl Rahner, S.J. (1904-1984), states that to understand this part of ourselves we must start with God. In the beginning God was alone, but wanting to share infinite love and life, God posited a creature with which God might share God s own life in dialogue. This is really astonishing on our part. If we are capable of conversation with God than we have access into the divine life. When we pray with our hearts we hear the loving voice of God giving us inner peace. Many times Jesus asked those he encountered, What are you looking for? In prayer it is being open to hearing the voice of God saying, I love you, because that is what a heart raised to God is really seeking. God bless, 2017 Annual Catholic Appeal Please read the Annual Catholic Appeal wrap-up flyer included in this weekend s bulletin. This material shows participation and performance information as well as how the funds collected will be used to meet our spiritual and material needs. Thank you to all who participated in this important part of parish and diocesan life!

November 19, 2017 In Guatemala there is a statue of Christ purposefully missing a hand as a reminder that we are the hands of Christ in the world helping our brothers and sisters. Every year at Blessed Sacrament, we have the opportunity to serve our imprisoned brothers and sisters through Angel Tree by providing Christmas gifts to their children. THIS WEEKEND and December 2/3, select an angel gift tag with the gift wish of a child. Purchase the gift ($15-25), wrap it, and return it to church no later than Sunday, December 10 by 11 am. It s important that the gifts be returned on time since the deliveries will be made to the families in the early afternoon on December 10. Monetary donations are also accepted. Others ways to get involved with this ministry include: Register Gifts before and after masses Gift Delivery on Sunday, December 10 (visit this link to sign up: http://bit.ly/2i1cc53) Write Christmas cards to the prisoners on Sunday, December 10 This unique program gives you an opportunity to share God's love by helping to meet the physical, emotional, and spiritual needs of the families of prisoners. Thank you for your support! Last week s bulletin stated that January 1 is a Holy Day of Obligation. It is NOT this year, but we will still offer 7pm Mass that day. Please join us in celebrating this important solemnity! Volunteers are needed for our parish sponsored Luke House Community Lunch on November 27! Sign up at blsacrament.org if you are interested. Keeping the Connections is looking for individually-packaged treats to be donated for final exams packages for college students! You can drop them off in the back of Church by November 29 or bring them to the parish center. They also accept monetary donations to cover the cost of assembling and shipping mailings--please make checks out to Blessed Sacrament Parish with Keeping the Connections in the memo!
