You probably know more than one person who has stopped practicing their faith or left the Catholic Church altogether. Deacon Alexander Wroblicky, Diocesan Secretary for Evangelization and Social Concerns, will be at the Kohler Hall of Our Lady of Fatima Parish, Hopewell Township from 1:30-3:00PM on Sunday, May 20th to present a reflection and lead a discussion in reaching out to loved ones who have fallen away or become inactive in their faith. A Family Perspective...by Bud Ozar Jesus was worried about his disciples and he turned to prayer. No matter how much time we spend trying to guard and protect our children, each day they become less dependent on us and we must let go and let God. Prayer and parenting go together. Marriage Moments......by Susan Vogt God is love, and whoever remains in love remains in God and God in him. (1Jn 4:16) Some people quibble over who is saved and who is worthy to be considered a Christian. Look for the love. Would others know you were a Christian without you telling them? Parenting Pointers...by Susan Vogt Rules: Our kids used to complain about our family rules (bedtimes, limits on TV and computer time, being home for dinner, etc.) A family doesn t need many rules but rules show you care and the ones you do have must be enforced consistently. This takes parental energy. Pray for strength. BACKYARD BARBECUE Providence Connections will hold its annual fundraising event, the 2012 Backyard Barbecue, to be held on June 15, 2012 at the John Heinz History Center (5:00 9:00pm). Seventh Sunday of Easter May 20, 2012 The Pastor s Corner ~ Fr. Lou Vallone A regularly scheduled Town Hall Meeting was held following the anticipated Mass for Ascension Thursday. Here are some of the issues discussed: 1. We are doing very well financially and in participation despite the closing of the Ambridge Bridge. My thanks to one and all for going out of your way to stay worshipping here. 2. First Communion was a great experience, even though we only had four children. There were no first graders in CCD, so there may not be a First Communion next year. The Holy Week ceremonies were wonderful, even though we had no one enter the Church at the Easter Vigil. No weddings have been scheduled so far this year at our Church. Somehow there is a discordance between the significantly increased number of participants at weekly Mass (we now regularly average over 700 per weekend) and the sparseness of sacramental celebrations. I need to meditate on that to see if I can find a reason. 3. We were audited for our compliance with the Protecting God's Children Program and were found to be on target. However, I still maintain that all adults ought to take the training, not just those required by policy. We will continue to advertise each time it is offered in our area and I still offer to pay any fees for anyone to take it. 4. We have the plans and the bid for an overhang to shelter the handicap door, but we haven't been able to obtain a building permit yet. We may have to wait on that project. We will have a bid for the carpeting in the sanctuary. We hope to schedule that after June 10. Also, we have been informed by the safety inspector that we must replace two of the entrances in the Church with doors that have panic bars on them, put lighted Exit signs over each door, and install an emergency lighting system. We will put those out for bid. We have the money to pay those bills from Parish Share overage, but as we get the costs, we will add them to our "Capital Improvements" goal in the bulletin. The money contributed in the monthly envelops will go to those projects, and we would be more than happy to accept any specific donations for them. 5. Some have noted that often our rotation of priests gets out of sync. Remember please that Fr. Bob and I are only half time at St. Catherine, half time at St. John of God. The number of priests continues to shrink and those of us left are getting older. I do also have other duties in my priesthood, including delivering the Good Leaders, Good Shepherds program of leadership training for priests. There are only 4 priest Learning Leaders in the country currently certified to lead the program, and it has now grown to be offered in more than 70 dioceses. I have committed to delivering about 6 times a year, and when I am away the schedule needs to be adjusted. Lest you think that I am cheating my parishes, I use what canon law affords me as days off and vacation days to do that, so it is my personal time not yours that I give to those programs. I have not had a personal vacation in several years, and my lungs are drying out from lack of SCUBA experience! Speaking of canon law, I do continue to teach it at the Law School at Duquesne University, but no longer do so in Rome. That program has been cancelled by the University. I will be awarded a Graduate Diploma in Canon Law from St. Paul University in Ottawa on June 2, having completed my studies this March. I can now add that to my two other Masters degrees but still won't get a raise! RETROUVAILLE: A LIFELINE FOR MARRIED COUPLES Retrouvaille offers help to couples experiencing trouble in their marriage. The weekend and post sessions focus on rebuilding marriage through better communication, listening, and understanding.
