I love the narratives in the Gospels which feature Peter...maybe because I can truly identify with him when life throws difficulties and the unknown at me. This weekend s Gospel is one that is familiar to us and although I could focus on the miracle of the wind dying down, I d rather reflect on Peter s spontaneous offer to get out of the boat and walk towards the Lord. Peter must have thought it was a good idea at the time he wanted to express his love and commitment to his friend. But the storm overcame Peter s desires. My take is that the instant Peter takes his eyes off Jesus and focuses on the strong wind he becomes afraid and calls out to the Lord to be rescued. The same is true in our own lives. As disciples we are called to focus on God, Jesus, the Spirit in our daily decisions, relationships, challenges, etc. This focus on the Lord is a source of grace so that I can listen, take heed, maintain direction and move on in my life and in relationships with others. But so often we allow the upsets, the stress, the messes to become the focus and listening becomes impossible; the grace that is needed is offered but I don t seem to be able to reach out and receive it. And like Peter, I become afraid and obsessed with the distractions. We all have strong winds that blow through our lives. They are a normal part of our human journey. Like Peter we have choices about where to focus our energy, our faith, our trust and our love. Like Peter, at times we get distracted and our focus gets taken away. For me, that is when I realize my prayer life needs a tune-up, my intentions need to be re-examined, and I once again need to trust that God is giving me all I need. The storms will come but they don t have to be a source of fear and anxiety. God is there, always, reaching out to pull me up from the choppy waters and buffeting winds we encounter on this wonderful journey that God has called us to embark upon with each other. So, I invite you to join me, after hearing this wonderful Gospel proclaimed, to reflect on where we are focusing these days: is our focus on God, our strength and rock, or are we like Peter, focused on on fears and anxieties. Something to think about in the days ahead. Sr. Linda Barringer 4 Guardian Angels Parish Kansas City, MO
