Waltham/Lexington Our Lady Comforter of the Afflicted Parish Scripture for the week of June 26, 2016 26 SUN 1 Kgs 19:16b, 19-21/Gal 5:1, 13-18/ Lk 9:51-62 27 Mon Am 2:6-10, 13-16/Mt 8:18-22 28 Tue Am 3:1-8; 4:11-12/Mt 8:23-27 29 Wed Acts 12:1-11/2 Tm 4:6-8, 17-18/Mt 16:13-19 30 Thu Am 7:10-17/Mt 9:1-8 1 Fri Am 8:4-6, 9-12/Mt 9:9-13 June 26th Thirteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time The Second Reading begins, For freedom Christ set us free; The word freedom or free is mentioned four times in just 146 words of this passage. Not a subtle message. God s law frees us from the slavery of sin, and Jesus death and resurrection sets us free. What do we do with our freedom? Jesus says clearly, Follow Me; Again, nothing subtle about this message. We, especially those who worship together each week, probably consider ourselves followers of Jesus. But are we disciples? A disciple is a person who prays daily, responds to the call to holiness that is directed to each of us, recognizes the need for Confession, has put Christ at the center of her/his life, serves the Church, and invites and helps others get to know Jesus better. If this seems like a long, demanding list, start by picking one or two practices to focus on. Build your disciple muscles one step at a time. Monthly Mass for the Sick The next monthly Mass for the Sick, sponsored by the Faith-Based Cancer Support Group of Sacred Heart and Our Lady Help of Christians Church, will be on Monday, June 27 at 6:30 p.m. at Our Lady s Church. Fr. Adrian Milik, Parochial Vicar, will celebrate the Mass and Anointing of the Sick. Following refreshments, Christine Chiu, registered dietician in the Vernon Cancer Center at Newton-Wellesley Hospital, will speak on Eating Well in Cancer Survivorship. She will talk about how nutrition can help reduce stress, build the body s immune system, increase one s energy, and reduce unpleasant symptoms from medications/ chemotherapy. The evening is designed to bring joy, hope, and peace to those who are affected by illness, including family and friends. The Mass and program will both be held downstairs at Our Lady s Church, located at 573 Washington St. in Newton. For questions or more information, please contact Arlene Larsen: 781-899-0213 or aflarsen48@gmail.com, or Lorraine Higgins: 617-244-0267 or higlor1@msn.com, or the parish offices. All are Welcome! Gardening Angels Please join our group on Wednesday evenings at 6:00 pm as we work together to maintain and beautify our beautiful Church property. Tasks include planting, watering, weeding and pruning. No experience needed, just a willingness to join the group! June 26, 2016
