Interchange Special Edition 2011 Editors Sr. Alice Nugent Sally Nowinski Photos Sr. Alice Nugent Proofreader Sr. Mary Jensch Technical Support Lauren Nowinski Interchange is a publication of the Daughters of Mary and Joseph. It has a twofold purpose: to inform its members of the involvement of our Sisters in mission and ministry; to acknowledge the generosity of our donors. Editorial Policy: The mailing list for the Interchange is not made available to any outside business firm or organization. Dear Friends - From the Leadership Office How does one write 85 years of history on a half page of paper? Since it is practically impossible, below is a brief synopsis. On August 29, 1926, seven Daughters of Mary and Joseph arrived at St. Augustine, Culver City. As you probably already know, within the first ten years, this young, new community opened two additional schools, one in San Francisco and one in Westwood. In the past 85 years we have staffed many schools on both the elementary and high school levels. We helped staff a House of Prayer for the Archdiocese of Los Angeles, and of course, we continue to minister in our very own Retreat Center. Our Sisters have served in many capacities college professors, counselors, religious education, parish ministries, and health care. It is with great joy and gratitude that we count the blessings that we have received from God as we look back on 85 years of devoted service to God s people. In sharing with you a brief reflection of the past, we look forward to continuing to share the mission of Christ, that all may be one. In this mission, we count on you, our friends and benefactors, as one of the many blessings God has bestowed on us. We have touched each other in both your and our ministries. We ask God to shower many graces and blessings on you. Hopefully you will be able to join us on Sunday, August 28, 2011 at 2:30 pm in St. Augustine Church, Culver City, as we celebrate the 85 th Anniversary of our foundation in California. Love and prayers Sisters Sheila Collins, Kitty Moloney, and Christina O Connor Our Mission: We are an international community of vowed religious women. We are committed to deepening our relationship with Jesus Christ. This relationship manifests itself as an individual and corporate response to the needs of today s world. Our mission is to be a compassionate, joyful presence enabling those to whom we minister to recognize their value and dignity. We are dedicated to sharing the merciful love of God with all who experience brokenness or poverty in any form. Our Vision: Be there for the whole Church, be there as a pardoned sinner who has found peace and rejoices in the merciful love of God. º Msgr. William Van Crombrugghe, Founder 2

Accept, O Lord, our thanks and praise for all that you have done for us. We thank you for the splendor of the whole creation, for the beauty of the world, for the wonder of life, and for the mystery of love. We thank you for the blessing of family and friends, and for the loving care which surrounds us on every side. We thank you for setting us at tasks which demand our best efforts, and for leading us to accomplishments which satisfy and delight us. We thank you also for those disappointments and failures that lead us to acknowledge our dependence on you alone. Above all, we thank you for your Son Jesus Christ; for the truth of his Word and the example of his life; for his steadfast obedience, by which he overcame temptation; for his dying, through which he overcame death; and for which his rising to life again, in which we are raised to the life of your kingdom. Grant us the gift of your Spirit, that we may know him and make him known; and through him, at all times and in all places, may give thanks to you in all things. Amen. Book of Common Prayer/ Book of Divine Worship The Daughters of Mary and Joseph entered the California borders in 1926. They came from everywhere, but all entered with the same mission in mind TO MINISTER TO ANYONE AND EVERYONE. Their hands have served; their hearts have loved; their voices have sung; their spirits have shared the messages of the good will with all. Daughters of Mary and Joseph Affirmations from both parents and students. We are very grateful for the many years of service, friendship, and love you all have given our family. Those who act kindly in this world will have kindness. Thanking you with gratitude for all your thoughtfulness, the kindness you have given in a way that is all yours. Thanking you with gratitude and warmly hoping, too, that all the kindness you have given will be returned to all of you.. The DMJs have been the backbone of our schools and parishes for many years and are much appreciated by the parents. They have a deep dedication to families and the church community. Thank you. The presence of your Province in California is a true blessing. Through your involvement in a wide variety of areas in our state, you touch so many lives. I appreciate the joy and patience with which those I have met, do the work they are called to do. In our modern society, where there are so many distractions it is reassuring to have the presence of your women here in the state of California. Thank you for your dedication to being instruments of mercy in the hand of God. I once read that to have faith is to have wings thank you from the bottom of our hearts for giving us our wings! Your teachings of God gave us life and love, but more importantly, as a mother, your constant guidance, care and genuine love of our children puts them on a path, the right path to be blessed with strong minds and hearts. We appreciate you! Thank you for everything you do for us. The love of God you bring into our lives touches each heart and leaves its impression forever. Your commitment to serve God has enriched so many lives, that God s love continues to spread. I attended St. Augustine s until I finished the third grade. The best years of my life! I made my First Communion at St. Augustine s. I used to hang around the school often spending time in the convent. Thank you to all the Sisters that taught me how to read and always made me feel loved! 8
