St. Colman December 17, 2017 Page Two THE THIRD SUNDAY OF ADVENT In a very troubled world, Christian joy is not meaningless. This is not a joy corresponding to our highs and lows. Rooting in faith, it convinces us that if our lives are properly focused, if they point to Christ, then, like the disciples on the turbulent lake, we can be confident and at peace. Isaiah told a very troubled people that restoration was near - not because it was merited but because God is faithful. As Jesus appears, the role of the Baptist is to make him known and affirm his mission. In Jesus, God s fidelity is unsurpassed. Listening to today s scripture, we have every reason to rejoice. That figure that will meet John in the desert is living proof that we are not and will never be abandoned. Joy is more than merrymaking or a fleeting laugh. True joy retains composure and peace in fortune and misfortune. It looks at mountains and oceans and sees God s imprint. It looks at large cities and sees an immense amount of good. Joy looks at Christ and knows he is there. Thoughts to reflect on and share: There is no more beautiful piece of clothing, anywhere in the world, than the robe of salvation and the mantle of justice in which our loving God wraps each and every one of his children. You MUST attend this session to complete your clearance process. Without this class you are not to minister in the parish. There are many sessions listed on the Diocese of Pittsburgh website at www.diopitt.org ADVENT CONFESSION SCHEDULE In All Circumstances Give Thanks - For people of faith, thanksgiving is not just a day in November when we gather with family and loved ones to eat turkey and stuffing and watch football. Instead, thankfulness is one of the foundational virtues of our lives. In our prayer we give thanks as we recognize the many ways God is at work. In the Eucharist, which itself means to give thanks, we offer a sacrifice of thanksgiving to God for the multitude of gifts he provides. It is easy to give thanks to God for what we consider the joys and blessings of our lives. Yet, are we thankful for the difficulties and challenges? In today s reading Saint Paul exhorts us to give thanks in all circumstances, recognizing the constant work of the Holy Spirit within and among us. As we journey On Mission for the Church Alive! we reflect with thankful hearts on how our parishes have supported and inspired our faith. And as we prepare for the changes to come, may our gratitude for God s constant work in our lives encourage us as we build up new communities of faith. Visit onmissionchurchalive.org to learn more and stay informed. HOLY HOUR WITH EXPOSITION OF THE BLESSED SACRAMENT There will be a Holy Hour with Exposition of the Blessed Sacrament this Monday, December 18th from 6:30-7:30pm.
