MARINERS CHURCH OUTREACH MINISTRIES 2017 YEAR-END REVIEW

IN 2017 67,185 HOURS SERVED $3,675,570 INVESTED IN KINGDOM IMPACT

DEAR FRIEND, I greet you in the matchless name of our Lord Jesus Christ. We at Mariners Outreach cannot express our gratefulness for your longterm, sustained engagement. It s unbelievable that this year marks 30 years since Mariners Outreach started from a very sacrificial moment! The idea that excites me most is how God chooses to use us mortal beings. The reality is He doesn t use us because He needs us, He uses us because He loves us. As we trust Him with our time, talent and treasure, He takes what we give Him and does what only He can do. The way we can live an extraordinary life is to invest in the poor, forgotten, marginalized, and disenfranchised. When we were far off, He came near and brought us close to Him so we can do the same. Thank you for not settling for a mediocre life and giving yourselves as Jesus did. Remember, He is never done with you. God used an 84-year-old lady to give me a prized education. She could never have known her generosity would lead me to serve alongside you. I pray as you read and go through this book, God will open your heart to what He has in store for you next. The world is waiting in eager expectation for Christ followers to awaken and put God on display. I pray our response will be like Joshua, as for me and my house, we will serve the Lord. When it comes to serving God s people, do not be an innocent bystander. One day, you will get to hear from Him, well done, my good and faithful servant. Until that day, let us keep serving and working while it is still day, for when night comes, no one will be able to work (John 9:4). May God bless you with enough bravery to believe you can change the world. And may you respond boldly and courageously. Sincerely, Christian aka BlaqRhyno 1

2 DISASTER RELIEF Mariners Church is committed to responding to natural disasters as God leads. When we can, we respond with our physical presence by partnering with local churches who will stand with the community before, during, and after the disaster. When we can t be there physically, our first step is identifying a partner. We are guided by how God is speaking to leadership, key individuals and you, our church. Because each situation is unique, our engagement can be for a brief season, or sometimes, long-term relationships.

YOU RESPONDED! HOUSTON 14 teams, 165 volunteers, mucking out houses and rebuilding 2 semi-trucks of supplies 70 industrial dehumidifers PUERTO RICO Sending 10 generators and pallets of water 3

RESOURCE CENTER Our Mariners Resource Center meets immediate needs in our local community. Your generous donations provide clothing and other goods for those in emergency situations, supply partner churches in Santa Ana with needed items for their community, and stock our on-campus thrift store these funds directly support Outreach Ministries. $1,101,257 raised from the Thrift Store since 2014 331 volunteers per month 2,046 bags of groceries given 53,980 books donated to library COMMUNITY CENTER Our new Community Center will serve as the front door to Mariners Church. Because of your investment, high divorce rates, homelessness, addiction, and cultural barriers are all needs in our community we can engage with strategic and tangible solutions. 14 homes furnished for domestic abuse victims, emancipated youth and refugee families 247 ESL students per class $312,400 worth of goods donated to charities 4

MILITARY MINISTRY Our Military Ministry works hard to support our Marines currently stationed in the 3/5 Battalion at Camp Pendleton. Because of your involvement, we play a critical role in boosting the troops morale by hosting Marine deployment events, free home cooked meals each Sunday on base, and military family events to connect with families in need of community and support. 174 Marines served weekly Welcomed back Marines from deployment in November 32,573 meals prepared and served The night before our annual summer celebration with the Marines we learned of a helicopter crash off the coast of Australia, where our 3/5 Marines were deployed. The day of the celebration, we still weren t sure about the safety of our deployed Marines, but we were able to serve the community in a unique way. We grieved with them, laughed with them, and stood with them in time of uncertainty. The event was truly powerful, and God used it for more than we could have ever imagined. We lost Ruben Velasco in the accident, a Marine from 3/5. Our prayers continue for his family. 5

BE FEARLESS Every year in the spring, we take time to answer the call from Jesus to love God and care for the poor and marginalized in our local and global communities. By doing this, we are able to experience and share the love of God that inspires us to follow Jesus and fearlessly change the world. 6 14 local outreach programs $954,000 raised through Outreach Weekends 18 partner organizations 32 Free Wheelchair Mission Orange County Social Services Teen Leadership Foundation Uganda Church Plant World Relief, Humanitarian Aid Sheepfold, Women s Shelter Fristers: Unwed Pregnant Teens Kids Around the World Food Distribution Parc Derian Community Center Orangewood, Foster Home Treffpunkt Refugee Center, Germany Madison Elementary School, Santa Ana Kennedy Elementary School, Santa Ana New Alternatives Foster Home Solidarity: Legal Services Christian Arabic Church Christian Community Development Association Go Go Grandmas, Malawi Orphans initiatives supported

CELEBRATE DIFFERENT In the holiday season, we remember Jesus gave up His position, came to our world as a humble servant, and shared the most sacred parts of His life with us. Together, we celebrate different by giving generously, serving faithfully, and sharing openly with our neighbors. 7,112 Christmas gifts given to at-risk youth 2,065 people served 413 first-time volunteers 7

FOSTER YOUTH AND FAMILIES Through almost 30 years of partnership, you have demonstrated the Church is the answer to the foster care problem in Orange County. If we as the people of the church work together, we can change the lives of our most vulnerable kids and transform the foster care system. 25 YEARS OF PARTNERSHIP WITH OC SOCIAL SERVICES 8

BRAVE EVENT We know bravery is not just one moment nor one decision but something that is developed in our every day life. The Brave Event brings together young women, including those who are at-risk, to show them how bravery can lead to an extraordinary life, and give them hope and vision for their future. 987 girls and women in attendance 9

LIGHTHOUSE COMMUNITY CENTER Through the Lighthouse Community Centers in Santa Ana, you have been standing alongside an at-risk neighborhood for over 25 years. As the Church, you have chosen to stand in the gap for families who live life in the margins of society. You have empowered local leaders to become changeagents in their community by breaking cycles of poverty, and working together to restore hope. 244 students tutored weekly $14,260 scholarship program 10

19 global residents in the past 5 years GLOBAL RESIDENCY PROGRAM You have not only gone to the ends of the Earth to make Christ s love known, you have opened your homes to our global friends. The Global Residency Program celebrates 5 years of your faithfulness in supporting next generation global church leaders. You have given them an opportunity to learn from Mariners and leave their mark on us so they can return to their country with renewed vision to transform their country in Jesus name. 3ministries launched 8countries represented 11 ministries served in jhm worship care and recovery mariners kids outreach life groups rooted 13

11 countries 52 partners 4generations GLOBAL CONVENE Global Convene is a representation of numerous countries and thousands of churches. For nearly a decade you have prayed, served, and occasionally danced, with many from the global community. You have shaped our church to be a place many call their home but most importantly you have helped us become a global family. You have provided a way for us to link arms with our global family so God s promises may be fulfilled. 14

388 students sponsored 20 students graduated, 16 will go to college MEXICO Because of its history and culture, Mexico is one of the most visited countries in the world. Even so, there are areas where children will not get the opportunity to go to school. Through your generosity, a vision of planting 50 churches in the greater Tijuana area has come alive. As of 2017, 34 churches have been planted and 365 children within those churches have been sponsored by you and are able to attend school. 3 taxis purchased for sustainable development 15

HAITI $21,000 raised through VBS to help support the development of the Haiti school Haiti s natural beauty ranges from azure waters to tropical foliage, but it remains the poorest country in the western hemisphere. After an earthquake in 2010, we helped our partner build a children s home for children who lost their parents. Our partner oversees 24 churches, a Bible training school, many sustainable projects, and the children s home which continues to grow. Next, we will build a new school that will bring sustainability to community building initiatives, provide jobs, educate 1,000 students, and bring hope to Haiti. HAITI DISASTER RESPONSE In October of 2016, Category 4 Hurricane Matthew destroyed the Southwestern region of Haiti. It brought 150mph winds and 40 inches of rain, leaving behind desolation and destruction. In its path was our church partner, Pastor Sam, the 24 churches he oversees, and the children s home. Immediately following the storm, Pastor Sam was equipped by your generosity to feed 18,000 people, rebuild over 100 homes, and 5 churches. 16

UGANDA 300 kids sponsored Known as the Pearl of Africa, Uganda is a beautiful country filled with vast natural resources. Despite the natural beauty there are over 30,000 internally displaced people in Uganda as a result of war. Through your support since 2007, we have aided in the growth of nearly 70 churches throughout Uganda which provide the truth and hope needed as the country rebuilds. KENYA Kenya is famous for its savanna grasslands and is one of the most serene destinations for safaris. Not far from the grasslands are the skyscrapers that make up the capital, Nairobi. Just outside of Nairobi are densely populated settlements made of tin, cardboard, and scrap wood, known as slums. Because of you, Kenya has become a vital part of Mariners this is where Rooted is from! Our partners have developed children s homes, schools, church plants, cancer care ministries, micro-finance institutions, and connected handicraft artisans to global markets. 17

EGYPT Egypt is known for having the longest recorded ancient civilization in history. Since 2011, effects of revolutions left Egypt with growing poverty, unemployment, and crime rates. Despite this, our church partner extends love to people from all religious backgrounds. They are the largest evangelical church in the region, located in Cairo, with a presence in over 20 countries in the Middle East. CONGO Over the last twenty years, Congo has seen more chaos and death than any place on the planet. War, tribal animosity, rebel groups, extreme poverty, and sexual violence are daily realities. But, there is hope because you support our Congo partners. Over 20,000 men have gone through their men s programs since their launch six years ago, and they started a new school two years ago. Because of our partner s passion to see transformation in Congo, something miraculous is happening! 238 733 students in the attended school, up 85% congo unites from last year film screening 18

WHAT S NEXT? IN 2018 WE WILL: Fill our food pantry to address the hunger crisis in Orange County. 1 in 6 kids in Orange County suffer from hunger Engage the foster care system through a sponsorship program. This will enable you to support to the foster youth with prayer, supplies, outings, and mentoring to help them succeed. Open a new community center in Irvine Parc Derian. This will be the first of our community centers in a more established city, necessitating the need for new leaders, especially to reach the changing demographic of people in Irvine. Complete a rescue home for girls in Cambodia who are rescued from human trafficking. Our goal is to fully fund the self-sustaining farm which will provide all the funding needed to run the home for over 40 girls. Help complete 3 major sustainable schools in Congo, Kenya, and Haiti, These schools will be a place of education but also income generation for our partners. This will be a $4.5 Million undertaking but will change the future of these countries. Support the German church s initiative to reach refugees. We will engage them with leadership development, community development, and supporting facilities which will host programs for the refugees. 19

WHY GIVE? Outreach Ministries are funded above and beyond the church s operating budget and designed to mobilize thousands of volunteers. This has resulted in a much larger, cause driven budget with greater volunteer ownership and Kingdom impact.
