4-Phase program in: Cameroon Thailand Uganda Liberia Nepal Join us in creating SERVING LEADERSHIP MOVEMENTS around the globe! Proposed Budget: $99,000 Imagine our shock as we were ushered into a young pastor's office where he sat on a large throne-like chair with a platform for his feet. An attendant knelt before him to receive instructions. Was this simply a cultural sign of high respect or was something amiss in this pastor's concept of leadership? A few days later, this pastor stood before his congregation and promised that his leadership would change after hearing our message on Jesus' model of serving leadership. We'll also never forget the sight of another leader of 30+ churches prostrate on the floor, weeping after his feet were washed during the conclusion of our training. He could hardly get over the fact that we had come to serve and empower them. This man now leads a movement of over 40 churches and is developing his leaders in the serving leadership model of Jesus. INTRODUCTION Reverb Network provides leadership training, consulting and coaching to faith-based and non-profit organizations as well as to business groups and other associations for the purpose of creating a serving leadership culture in all spheres of society. Our goal is to develop a serving leadership movement based on the leadership principles of Jesus that will impact the world by changing the paradigm of what it means to be a leader. In this proposal we are asking you to prayerfully consider partnering with us in developing leaders in the countries of Uganda, Liberia, Nepal, Thailand and Cameroon. BACKGROUND After training over 3,000 leaders in Uganda during a two-year period using a large event format of workshops and seminars, we found that only a handful of leaders were using the training model and materials that we gave them to train and develop other leaders. Based on this assessment, we knew that we had to change our methods and strategy. This led us to pray and seek God's guidance and direction. After several months of prayer, study, and reflection, we believe God gave us the answer. We needed to develop leaders just the way that Jesus did! In studying Jesus' method we learned several very important principles: 1) Jesus chose to focus on a few rather than on the many. He knew that to reach the "many" he would first have to develop His disciples who would also train and develop others to do as He did. 2) Developing leaders requires the time and personal attention of an experienced leader. Jesus spent three years in a close, personal relationship with his disciples. He taught, coached, and mentored them in preparation to take the gospel to all the world. 3) Learning to lead like Jesus is a transformational journey that takes a lifetime. It is a process, not an event. 4) Jesus used an intentional process to develop His disciples from "fishers of fish" to "fishers of men." He empowered and commissioned them throughout their training and before ascension assigned them to impact the entire world. Phase 4: Uganda (2017) PAGE 2 of 6
LEADERSHIP DEVELOPMENT CONCEPT Our four-phase process is designed to take leaders who are not familiar with the principles of Jesus through a four-year leadership development program. Throughout the process they develop as leaders while also developing other leaders who in turn develop other leaders, just as Jesus did. To accomplish this, it requires us to focus on a few leaders (10-20) who are able and willing to make the necessary commitment to complete all four phases and begin training and developing other leaders. The four-phase process consists of the following key components: Developmental training: Each phase requires an intensive period of time (five days) where the leaders gain more in-depth knowledge of the principles and key concepts for that level, and be trained to teach others what they have learned. The four phases to be completed over a four-year timeframe are as follows: Year 1: Leading Self - Building character and competence. Year 2: Leading Others - Building trusting relationships. Year 3: Leading a Team - Building community and teamwork. Year 4: Leading an Organization - Achieving effectiveness and unity of purpose. Quarterly Leadership Huddles: Leaders meet in small groups of 4-5 once every three months to review what they have previously learned, share their experiences, pray for one another, and celebrate what God is doing in their life and leadership. Teaching others what they've learned: Each leader makes a commitment to teach what they have learned to others at least three times during each of the four years. Recruiting potential leaders. Each leader identifies and recruits three potential leaders with whom they begin the same leadership process. The leader continues to coach and mentor these new leaders and forms them into a leadership huddle. Each successive new leader is tasked with recruiting 3 new leaders. Low-cost, reproducible materials. Leaders are provided with low-cost materials that are easy to reproduce for the teaching and training of others. Phase 4: Uganda (2017) PAGE 3 of 6
THE POTENTIAL FOR EXPONENTIAL RESULTS This process has the potential to achieve exponential growth in the number of leaders in a church and in a nation. For example, if we started with 10 leaders and each new leader recruited three new leaders after the first year, we would have 400 trained leaders after just four years. We believe that through this process, pastors and other community leaders can grow their ministries. By developing new leaders and pastors, new churches will be planted, making a huge Kingdom difference in many unreached areas around the globe. PROJECT PROPOSAL We are asking for your financial support to assist us with two on-going leadership development programs in Uganda and Liberia, and three new programs in the countries of Nepal, Thailand, and Cameroon. CURRENT ONGOING LEADERSHIP DEVELOPMENT PROGRAMS Uganda: This movement begun just three years ago in Uganda has exposed thousands to the message of serving leadership. Today over 265 leaders in our program are training others in Uganda, Kenya, Burundi, and South Sudan (with trainers having introduced the material already in Rwanda and Congo DRC). Starting with 17 leaders in the summer of 2013, we lost 6 leaders from the original group, who for various reasons were unable to fulfill their commitment. The remaining 11 from this group are now in the third phase of the program. They trained 33 leaders in the second phase who are currently training new leaders in the first phase. Liberia: This initiative started with 24 pastors and church leaders in the fall of 2013 who completed the first phase of the program. Unfortunately, the nation of Liberia was struck with an outbreak of the Ebola virus in 2014, and due to travel restrictions we were unable to train them in second phase that year. Tragically, one of the pastors we trained died from this terrible disease. In our absence, the leaders trained approximately 75 new leaders in the first phase. In 2015, we were able to go back into the country and trained 47 leaders in the second phase of the program. Overall, there are now 98 leaders in the Liberia program. NEW PROJECTS FOR 2016 Thailand: We have a group of pastors and leaders in Thailand ready to start a leadership development program. Plans are to begin a 4-Phase program with them in October. Cameroon: We've been invited by the President of a Baptist Association (1000+ churches) to begin the program. Phase 4: Uganda (2017) PAGE 4 of 6
SCHEDULE FOR 2016 MARCH - Cameroon OCTOBER - Thailand [Plans are to head to Nepal in 2017 to begin a 4-phase program with leaders from multiple organizations and church planting groups. Although we had originally planned to go this year, those plans had to be postponed.] FUNDING NEEDED In order to accomplish the mission to start a leadership development movement in these five nations, we will need to raise $99,000 over the next five years with $14,000 budgeted for 2016. PROJECTED RESULTS We believe that the serving model of Jesus is the framework for leadership that must embody the global, missional church for lasting change and Kingdom impact. Our key partner in Uganda Pastor Daniel helped cast our original vision. Speaking from a burden in his heart, he shared that if we went deep with just 50 leaders and equipped them to train and empower others, we could see the entire continent of Africa transformed in our lifetime. We're planning for Pastor Daniel to join us in Cameroon for our projected training in 2016. Our goal is to start a leadership development movement in each of these five nations that, over time, will continue to equip, train, and release thousands of leaders into the Kingdom to transform their nations and eventually the whole world. By following the process that we teach and model, the potential exists for the leaders in each of these five nations to train nearly 300,000 leaders after the first ten years! That's 1.5 million leaders in just five countries for the glory of God! While we're fairly optimistic about the results of these leadership development programs, we're also not ignorant of spiritual warfare. Numerous challenges will confront us along the way, but we are confident that by the power of the Holy Spirit, Jesus will build his church through his model of serving leadership. ACCOUNTABILITY AND REPORTING All donors will receive an annual report on the progress of our leadership development programs plus full accounting of expenditures. Any money that is left over will be rolled over into the next year's budget and used for future leadership development opportunities that come our way. Phase 4: Uganda (2017) PAGE 5 of 6
