THE TWENTY FIRST SUNDAY OF ORDINARY TIME Pastor s Message Dear Parishioners, You are only as strong as the weakest link has meaning when talking about a chain of command. Hierarchy commands authority and the rock of Peter s profession of faith puts our pope at the top of the hierarchy. There are links to his authority and I, as pastor, am one of those links. The good news is that those who minister here at SVdP are also part of the chain. The bottom end of the chain is called subsidiarity. A great importance is given to these links because this is the immediate level of ministry is where God shares his authority. The grace of the Holy Spirit works through us to accomplish the gift of grace and salvation. Servant leadership is in service to subsidiarity especially to the weakest links. I also create new links to be added to the chain. Those that need help always have the hierarchy to help. The closest hierarchical link in the chain is I the pastor. Stewardship of Time and Talent is a time to get plugged into the chain of command. This how Jesus runs his church and now is the time to accept the invitation. Great fulfillment is felt by those who become ministers. They feel like they are a part of something so much bigger than themselves, and they really are. Please join and experience God s joy. Sincerely in Christ, Labor Day is Monday, September 4th Our parish offices will be closed in observance of this National Holiday! Euphemia and Dorothy s father, Valens or Valentinus, was a heathen, while Erasma and Thecla s father, Valentinian, was a Christian, who instructed all four in the faith. They were baptized in the river Natissa and consecrated to a religious life by B. Hermagoras, the bishop. A slave denounced them to Valentinus, who gave them over to the prefect. The women refused to give up their faith even after scourging and torture. Valentinus took the task of executioner, beheading all four and throwing their bodies into a river. Valentinian and Bishop Hermagoras recovered the bodies and buried them. Valentinus and his followers were killed by an earthquake and the treacherous slave was possessed by the devil and drowned himself in the same river.

Catholic Events and Resources August 27, 2017 SERRA SALUTE TO HONOR FATHER DOUG GRANDON Twenty First Sunday in Ordinary Time It s a good thing Jesus didn t give me the keys to the kingdom. Lord knows where they would show up. In fact, if you happen to come across a little keychain with a red heart that is engraved The Story and You could you shoot me an e-mail? I ve looked everywhere. Although he wasn t speaking literally when he handed the keys to Peter, Jesus was using the language of the household, the family. Here s the keys to the house, he said to Peter. Keep it safe from thieves and marauders. Keep it open for all who seek me. Keep it clean, and let plenty of fresh air and sunshine circulate. And keep the lights on, please. Don t ever let my Church be a place of darkness. We live in a time when the lights are, literally, going out in churches all over the world. In places of persecution, like Iraq and Syria, Christians have fled in historic numbers. In 1999, I was with a group of pilgrims who visited a Christian family in Bethlehem whose stone mason business had been operating since imagine this the time of Jesus. They had lived in the same neighborhood since the time of Christ. Five years later we returned to visit them. They were gone. On the other hand, in the prosperous communities of the west, the gospel seems to be losing its power to draw people into church buildings. But here s the thing: the buildings are not the church. The Church is the building. And we need to be with each other to sing, and pray, and hear the scriptures, and be restored by the Eucharist in order to build the kingdom whose keys will never be lost. Friday, September 8th - 6:00 pm to 9:00 pm Members of the Catholic community of Northern Colorado are invited to attend the banquet to honor Father Doug Grandon, September 8, 6PM at the Pinehurst Country Club in Denver. Tickets are $100 and $75 for clergy Proceeds are going to the Serra Trust Fund. The objectives and purposes of the Trust Fund are to foster religious vocations to the Catholic Church by providing financial assistance to those in formation and/or discernment for the priesthood or other religious life so that such vocations will not be discouraged or discontinued for reasons of financial hardship. Previous honors of the Serra Salute include: 2006 - Most Reverend Charles J. Caput, O.F.M. Cap 2012 - Reverend Andrew Kemberling, V.F. 2015 - Most Reverend Samuel J. Aquila, S.T.L.
