Matthew 5: 1 12 Gone Where? November 2, 2014 (All Saints Day) Rev. Lou Nyiri

Transcription:

One morning last month, I stood on Shaldon beach with a friend watching the tall ship, Stavros S Niarchos, glide gently down the harbour and out to sea. I was stunned by the size of the vessel, the sheer majesty. What would it have been like to be the button boy on the top of the rigging? As we watched Stavros heading off silently towards the horizon, we had no idea what lay ahead, we didn t know where she was going, it was quite emotional and especially as my friend reminded me of this poem. Gone from sight by Henry Van Dyke I am standing upon the seashore. A ship, at my side, spreads her white sails to the moving breeze and starts for the blue ocean. She is an object of beauty and strength. I stand and watch her until, at length, she hangs like a speck of white cloud just where the sea and sky come to mingle with each other. Then, someone at my side says, "There, she is gone." Gone where? Gone from my sight. That is all. She is just as large in mast, hull and spar as she was when she left my side. And, she is just as able to bear her load of living freight to her destined port. Her diminished size is in me -- not in her. And, just at the moment when someone says, "There, she is gone," there are other eyes watching her coming, and other voices ready to take up the glad shout, "Here she comes!" And that is dying... We are in the season of remembrance. All Saints Day and the Commemoration of the faithful departed reminds us of our mutual belonging with those who have gone before us. All Saints Day celebrates men and women in whose lives the church has seen the grace of God powerfully at work. The Commemoration of the Faithful Departed celebrates saints in a more local and intimate key, allowing us to remember with thanksgiving those we have known and loved, those who have given us life or nurtured us in faith. Remembrance Sunday goes on to explore the theme of memory, both corporate and individual, as we confront issues of war and peace, loss and self-giving, memory and forgetting. It is through the life, death and resurrection of Jesus Christ that we are able to enter the season of Remembrance with Sure and Certain Hope, knowing those we remember have heard the cry here she comes just was we ourselves will do when the time is right. May you know God s Blessing on you and your loved ones this Remembrance Season. Revd. Sue Astbury. 1

Bishopsteignton School is delighted to have been accepted as one of the projects put to the customer vote in the Tesco Bags of Help Scheme the blue tokens in the boxes at the entrance of the store. Our project will be there for two months from the 1 st November to the 31 st December 2017. The project with the most tokens across the region can win up to 4,000 for their project. We would love to win this money to help develop our forest school area and outside learning facilities. Therefore, we ask you to collect as many blue tokens as possible from the cashier every time you shop in Tesco and put them in the box for our project. Sometimes they are not forthcoming with offering the tokens, and will often give more than one if you ask!! Please spread the word to as many people as you can. Thank you.
