Our study of wisdom and related words in the Old Testament begins with and is based upon the following passage which Solomon wrote to his son, Jeroboam, desiring that he would acquire skill in righteous living and be prepared to be his successor upon the throne of Judah. It appears that Solomon wrote these Proverbs when he was still a young man and his son just a child; for we know, from Solomon s writings in Ecclesiastes, the book of his old age, that, even though he was extremely wise and blessed by God, he did not apply many of these Proverbs to his own life. Even so, we find these first verses of Proverbs are so rich in meaning and guidance that God surely inspired and dictated these very words. Twelve different words found in the following verses will be the focus of our study: The Proverbs of Solomon the son of David, king of Israel; To know WISDOM 2451 and INSTRUCTION; 4148 to PERCEIVE 995 the words of UNDERSTANDING; 998 To receive the INSTRUCTION 4148 of WISDOM, 7919 JUSTICE, 6664 and JUDGMENT, 4941 and EQUITY; 4339 To give SUBTLETY 6195 to the simple, to the young man KNOWLEDGE 1847 and DISCRETION. 4209 A wise man will hear, and will increase LEARNING; 3948 and a man of UNDERSTANDING 995 shall attain unto wise counsels: To understand a Proverb, and the interpretation; the words of the wise, and their dark sayings. The fear of the Lord is the beginning of KNOWLEDGE: 1847 but fools despise WISDOM 2451 and INSTRUCTION 4148 (Proverbs 1:1-7). Since perceive 995 and understanding 998 are related words, with the Hebrew word for understanding 998 being a derivative of the Hebrew word for perceive, 995 the word we shall focus on in this lesson, wisdom, 7919 found 63 times in the Old Testament according to Strongs count of its usage, is the fourth in in this series. STRONGS 7919 [sakal /saw kal/] verb. A primitive root; TWOT 2263, 2264; 63 occurrences; AV translates as understand 12 times, wise 12 times, prosper eight times, wisely six times, understanding five times, consider four times, instruct three times, prudent twice, skill twice, teach twice, and translated miscellaneously seven times. Outline of Biblical Usage: 1 to be prudent, be circumspect, wisely understand, prosper. 1A (Qal) to be prudent, be circumspect. 1B (Hiphil). 1B1 to look at or upon, have insight. 1B2 to give attention to, consider, ponder, be prudent. 1B3 to have insight, have comprehension. 1B3A insight, comprehension (subst). 1B4 to cause to consider, give insight, teach. 1B4A the teachers, the wise. 1B5 to act circumspectly, act prudently, act wisely. 1B6 to prosper, have success. 1B7 to cause to prosper. 2 (Piel) to lay crosswise, cross (hands). It should be noted that sekel 7922, a masculine noun derivative of sakal 7919 is used 16 times in the Old Testament in the following places: 1 Samuel 25:3, 1 Chronicles 22:12; 26:14; 2 Chronicles 2:12; 30:22; Ezra 8:18; Nehemial 8:8; Job 17:4; Psalm 111:10; Proverbs 3:4; 12:8; 13:15; 16:22; 19:11; 23:9 and Daniel 8:25. Page 1

Page 2 TWOT 2263 (sakal) I, wise(ly), understand, prosper. Nine other English words translate the verb: instruct, prudent, et al. (ASV same in most instances; RSV stresses the success, prosper concept for [sakal). Derivatives 2263a (sekel) understanding. Of the seventy-four times the verb form is used [please note that we do not have any explanation as to the different numbers between Strongs and TWOT], all but two appear in the Hiphil stem. In many instances sakal is synonymous with bin (see hokmâ for discussion of synonyms), but there is a fine distinction. While bin indicates distinguishing between, sakal relates to an intelligent knowledge of the reason. There is the process of thinking through a complex arrangement of thoughts resulting in a wise dealing and use of good practical common sense. Another end result is the emphasis upon being successful. sakal also involves one in what he considers, or pays attention to. God provides for the afflicted and needy that they ponder who is their benefactor (Isaiah 41:20). The righteous one is said to take note of the house of the wicked; this acting wisely is directed toward a thing, the evil abode (Proverbs 21:12, a difficult passage, taken as the righteous one ). The leaders of Israel s household gathered together before Ezra in order to give attention to the words of the Law (Nehemiah 8:13). Still another usage of the verb is to have insight or comprehension. The man who would boast of anything should boast that he has insight into, and knows the Lord (Jeremiah 9:23). The Hiphil infinitive haskel is a substantive meaning insight, seen as God s gift to Israel through his rulers and teachers (Jeremiah 3:15). This word also occurs in Proverbs 1:3 where it is stated that the book was written to give the young man insight into wise behavior. As in Jeremiah, wise behavior means conforming one s life to the character of God. Another usage stresses the idea of causing to consider, giving insight. and teaching. David indicates that the Lord made him understand the details of the pattern of temple furniture (used as the direct object relating to a thing, I Chronicles 28:19). Gabriel gave Daniel insight or skill (Daniel 9:22). There is also the meaning of acting circumspectly or prudently. In a time of evil the prudent know to keep silent (Amos 5:13). God has his way of determining whether a general population is acting wisely so as to seek him (Psalms 14:2). A wife who acts prudently is described as from the Lord (Proverbs 19:14). Likewise, the suffering Servant acted prudently in fulfilling the work assigned to him (Isaiah 52:13). The verb also may mean to prosper or have success. Saul feared David because the latter was prospering greatly as a result of the Spirit s presence in his life to guide. Indeed, by this successful behavior David in effect ousted Saul from his position of leadership (I Samuel 18:14, 15). Jeremiah emphasizes that judgment was pronounced on the shepherd leaders of a favored nation. The leaders were regarded as stupid because they did not seek the Lord. As a result, they would not prosper and their flocks would be scattered (Jeremiah 10:2 l).

Page 3 Genesis 3:6 And when the woman saw that the tree was good for food, and that it was pleasant to the eyes, and a tree to be desired to make one wise 7919, she took of the fruit thereof, and did eat, and gave also unto her husband with her; and he did eat. Genesis 48:14 And Israel stretched out his right hand, and laid it upon Ephraim s head, who was the younger, and his left hand upon Manasseh s head, guiding his hands wittingly; 7919 for Manasseh was the firstborn. Deuteronomy 29:9 Keep therefore the words of this covenant, and do them, that ye may prosper 7919 in all that ye do. Deuteronomy 32:29 O that they were wise, that they understood 7919 this, that they would consider their latter end! Joshua 1:7 Only be thou strong and very courageous, that thou mayest observe to do according to all the law, which Moses my servant commanded thee: turn not from it to the right hand or to the left, that thou mayest prosper 7919 whithersoever thou goest. Joshua 1:8 This book of the law shall not depart out of thy mouth; but thou shalt meditate therein day and night, that thou mayest observe to do according to all that is written therein: for then thou shalt make thy way prosperous 6743, and then thou shalt have good success 7919. 1 Samuel 18:5 And David went out whithersoever Saul sent him, and behaved himself wisely 7919 : and Saul set him over the men of war, and he was accepted in the sight of all the people, and also in the sight of Saul s servants.

1 Samuel 18:14 And David behaved himself wisely 7919 in all his ways; and the LORD was with him. Page 4 1 Samuel 18:15 Wherefore when Saul saw that he behaved 7919 himself very wisely 7919, he was afraid of him. 1 Samuel 18:30 Then the princes of the Philistines went forth: and it came to pass, after they went forth, that David behaved himself more wisely 7919 than all the servants of Saul; so that his name was much set by. 1 Kings 2:3 And keep the charge of the Lord thy God, to walk in his ways, to keep his statutes, and his commandments, and his judgments, and his testimonies, as it is written in the law of Moses, that thou mayest prosper 7919 in all that thou doest, and whithersoever thou turnest thyself. 2 Kings 18:7 And the Lord was with him; and he prospered whithersoever he went forth: and he rebelled against the king of Assyria, and served him not. 1 Chronicles 28:19 All this, said David, the Lord made me understand 7919 in writing by his hand upon me, even all the works of this pattern. 2 Chronicles 30:22 And Hezekiah spoke comfortably unto all the Levites that taught 7919 the good knowledge of the Lord: and they did eat throughout the feast seven days, offering peace offerings, and making confession to the Lord God of their fathers. Nehemiah 8:13 And on the second day were gathered together the chief of the fathers of all the people, the priests, and the Levites, unto Ezra the scribe, even to understand 7919 the words of the law.

Nehemiah 9:20 Thou gavest also thy good spirit to instruct 7919 them, and withheldest not thy manna from their mouth, and gavest them water for their thirst. Page 5 Job 22:2 Can a man be profitable unto God, as he that is wise 7919 may be profitable unto himself? Job 34:27 Because they turned back from him, and would not consider 7919 any of his ways: Job 34:35 Job hath spoken without knowledge, and his words were without wisdom. 7919 Psalm 2:10 Be wise 7919 now therefore, O ye kings: be instructed, ye judges of the earth. Psalm 14:2 The LORD looked down from heaven upon the children of men, to see if there were any that did understand 7919, and seek God. Psalm 32:8 I will instruct 7919 thee and teach thee in the way which thou shalt go: I will guide thee with mine eye. Psalm 36:3 The words of his mouth are iniquity and deceit: he hath left off to be wise, 7919 and to do good. Psalm 41:1 To the chief Musician, A Psalm of David. Blessed is he that considereth 7919 the poor: the Lord will deliver him in time of trouble.

Psalm 47:7 For God is the King of all the earth: sing ye praises with understanding. 7919 Page 6 Psalm 53:2 God looked down from heaven upon the children of men, to see if there were any that did understand, 7919 that did seek God. Psalm 64:9 And all men shall fear, and shall declare the work of God; for they shall wisely consider 7919 of his doing. Psalm 94:8 Understand, ye brutish among the people: and ye fools, when will ye be wise 7919? Psalm 101:2 I will behave myself wisely 7919 in a perfect way. O when wilt thou come unto me? I will walk within my house with a perfect heart. Psalm 106:7 Our fathers understood 7919 not thy wonders in Egypt; they remembered not the multitude of thy mercies; but provoked him at the sea, even at the Red sea. Psalm 119:99 I have more understanding 7919 than all my teachers: for thy testimonies are my meditation. Proverbs 1:3 To receive the instruction of wisdom 7919, justice, and judgment, and equity; Proverbs 10:5 He that gathereth in summer is a wise 7919 son: but he that sleepeth in harvest is a son that causeth shame.

Proverbs 10:19 In the multitude of words there wanteth not sin: but he that refraineth his lips is wise 7919. Page 7 Proverbs 14:35 The king s favour is toward a wise 7919 servant: but his wrath is against him that causeth shame. Proverbs 15:24 The way of life is above to the wise, 7919 that he may depart from hell beneath. Proverbs 16:20 He that handleth a matter wisely 7919 shall find good: and whoso trusteth in the LORD, happy is he. Proverbs 16:23 The heart of the wise 2450 teacheth 7919 his mouth, and addeth learning to his lips. Proverbs 17:2 A wise 7919 servant shall have rule over a son that causeth shame, and shall have part of the inheritance among the brethren. Proverbs 17:8 A gift is as a precious stone in the eyes of him that hath it: whithersoever it turneth, it prospereth 7919. Proverbs 21:11 When the scorner is punished, the simple is made wise: and when the wise is instructed, 7919 he receiveth knowledge. Proverbs 21:12 The righteous man wisely considereth 7919 the house of the wicked: but God overthroweth the wicked for their wickedness.

Proverbs 21:16 The man that wandereth out of the way of understanding 7919 shall remain in the congregation of the dead. Isaiah 44:18 They have not known nor understood: for he hath shut their eyes, that they cannot see; and their hearts, that they cannot understand 7919. Jeremiah 3:15 And I will give you pastors according to mine heart, which shall feed you with knowledge and understanding 7919. Jeremiah 9:24 But let him that glorieth glory in this, that he understandeth 7919 and knoweth me, that I am the Lord which exercise lovingkindness, judgment, and righteousness, in the earth: for in these things I delight, saith the Lord. Jeremiah 10:21 For the pastors are become brutish, and have not sought the Lord: therefore they shall not prosper, 7919 and all their flocks shall be scattered. Jeremiah 20:11 But the Lord is with me as a mighty terrible one: therefore my persecutors shall stumble, and they shall not prevail: they shall be greatly ashamed; for they shall not prosper: 7919 their everlasting confusion shall never be forgotten. Jeremiah 23:5 Behold, the days come, saith the Lord, that I will raise unto David a righteous Branch, and a King shall reign and prosper, 7919 and shall execute judgment and justice in the earth.

Jeremiah 50:9 For, lo, I will raise and cause to come up against Babylon an assembly of great nations from the north country: and they shall set themselves in array against her; from thence she shall be taken: their arrows shall be as of a mighty expert 7919 man; none shall return in vain. Page 9 Daniel 1:4 Children in whom was no blemish, but well favoured, and skilful 7919 in all wisdom 2451, and cunning in knowledge 1847, and understanding 995 science, and such as had ability in them to stand in the king s palace, and whom they might teach the learning and the tongue of the Chaldeans. Daniel 1:17 As for these four children, God gave them knowledge and skill 7919 in all learning and wisdom: and Daniel had understanding in all visions and dreams. Daniel 9:13 As it is written in the law of Moses, all this evil is come upon us: yet made we not our prayer before the Lord our God, that we might turn from our iniquities, and understand 7919 thy truth. Daniel 9:22 And he informed me, and talked with me, and said, O Daniel, I am now come forth to give thee skill 7919 and understanding 998. Daniel 9:25 Know therefore and understand, 7919 that from the going forth of the commandment to restore and to build Jerusalem unto the Messiah the Prince shall be seven weeks, and threescore and two weeks: the street shall be built again, and the wall, even in troublous times. Daniel 11:33 And they that understand 7919 among the people shall instruct many: yet they shall fall by the sword, and by flame, by captivity, and by spoil, many days.

Daniel 11:35 And some of them of understanding 7919 shall fall, to try them, and to purge, and to them white, even to the time of the end: because it is yet for a time appointed. Page 10 Daniel 12:3 And they that be wise 7919 shall shine as the brightness of the firmament; and they that turn many to righteousness as the stars for ever and ever. Daniel 12:10 Many shall be purified, and made white, and tried; but the wicked shall do wickedly: and none of the wicked shall understand; but the wise 7919 shall understand. Amos 5:13 Therefore the prudent 7919 shall keep silence in that time; for it is an evil time.
