Mark 11:25 If you have forgiven everyone everything it would be appropriate to forgive them, then read no further! But if you are similar to the other 99.9% of humans who live on this planet, be of good cheer and read on. Since this article is essentially a brief message about forgiveness, let s begin with how the article ends: Jesus instructs us to forgive, and presents us with all we will ever, ever need to know related to forgiveness. But, to be clear, the practice of forgiveness may require a lifetime of patience and prayer. Need examples? Consider the prodigal son (or forgiving Father), the healing of the man born blind, one of the two thieves crucified; this is a list of only several of the forgiving Jesus described or accomplished. People may resist forgiving based upon their belief of what forgiveness appears to be. Some believe forgiveness is an obligation (hmm, it is expected of Christians, but in the end it is choice). Well then, is forgiving someone the equivalent of letting that person get away with something? No. But it does mean relief from the burden we bear and the price we pay for our unforgiveness often anger, which begets resentment, which leads down a bitter path. Isn t it sufficient to forgive a person once? How did Jesus respond seventy times seven translation: as often as necessary. If I forgive him/her, does that mean I have to like (live with) him/her? No. Forgiveness does not relieve the other person of the responsibility of his/her actions. Recall when the previous Pope forgave his would be assassin, was the assassin then released from jail? If someone abuses us, mentally or physically, and we forgive him/ her, does that mean we must remain in the abusive relationship? No. So what is there about forgiving someone that makes this act one of the most deeply demanding, heart wrenching and complicated acts a follower of Christ can commit to? Perhaps because in our self-focused heart of hearts we maintain the unquestioned belief that forgiving someone is just not fair. Are there any of us who believe, truly believe, that our world is indeed a fair place in which to live? Or maybe the reason for this difficulty is that forgiving simply demands too much of us after all, it was the other who was in the wrong! I mean really, why should I forgive Bob? Do you honestly desire to know the answer to that question? Then ask God. What He may convey to you is that He forgives each of us because He knows our humanness (fallibility); He is not seeking revenge for our actions, and forgiveness creates a new and loving relationship with Him. But what about the unrepentant person, what is to be done about him/her? Forgive and find relief from the burden of your unforgiveness. What about someone who has hurt or harmed us so deeply that we are scarred and broken? Forgive for the healing you will experience. And what if in my heart of hearts it is just too difficult to forgive? Forgive and pray for a forgiving heart. Use this test for who and/or what to forgive: Would Jesus forgive? Now, do you begin to realize the depth, breadth and nature of God s grace and His unstoppable love for us? De Colores, Brian Wood, Community Lay Director Subscription Information 6 In Him we have redemption through his blood, the forgiveness of sins, in accordance with the riches of God s Grace. Ephesians 1:7

The Holy Spirit Showed Up The Holy Spirit showed up at Women s Walk #90. You expected him, didn t you? We were at Sulphur Grove for the first time. Were you surprised the Holy Spirit knew the address? Or did you think he only came to Emmaus walks at Normandy? Or for you old timers: Christ church? Candlelight was different. Some of us fretted at the logistics and molehills. The Holy Spirit didn t mind. He just showed up. We had some new leadership. They didn t do some of the things the way we ve always done it. But they prayed and trusted, and the Holy Spirit came with power. We had 24 pilgrims. They didn t anticipate anything... and the Holy Spirit blessed them beyond belief. And for some of us who have been on other walks... the Holy Spirit again arrived and convicted us and loved us and led us to higher ground. After a couple of the weekend s key events, the Spiritual Director told the Lay Director, that you could do these things six different ways, standing on your head, upside down, and backwards... and the Holy Spirit would still show up. Three hundred willing servants came together with sleeves rolled up and prayers kneed up... and the Holy Spirit turned all those efforts into God moments. As near as I can tell, little matters if the Holy Spirit shows up... and nothing important happens if he does not. Come Holy Spirit, fill the hearts of your faithful and kindle in us the fire of your love. de Colores Brad Martin (p.s. I have just enough faith to believe that the Holy Spirit will again show up for the Men s Walk #56 in August. Keep praying, believing and serving.) But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on you; and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth." Acts 1:8 NIV

Men s Walk #56 Sulphur Grove UMC August 15-18, 2013 1Thus says the LORD to his anointed, to Cyrus, whose right hand I have grasped, to subdue nations before him and to loose the belts of kings, to open doors before him that gates may not be closed: 2 "I will go before you and level the exalted places, I will break in pieces the doors of bronze and cut through the bars of iron, 3 I will give you the treasures of darkness and the hoards in secret places, that you may know that it is I, the LORD, the God of Israel, who call you by your name. 4For the sake of my servant Jacob, and Israel my chosen, I call you by your name, I name you, though you do not know me. 5 I am the LORD, and there is no other, besides me there is no God; I equip you, though you do not know me, 6 that people may know, from the rising of the sun and from the west, that there is none besides me; I am the LORD, and there is no other.
