ST. MARY MAGDALEN ALL THINGS CONSIDERED ADVENT PENANCE The season of Advent is meant to be a transformative time, a time when we turn away from sin and seek to welcome Christ as our Savior and to live him more fully. It is especially appropriate for us to take the time to ritualize this change of heart by bringing our sin to the Sacrament of Penance. Although I trust we all take some time to examine our lives each day and to apologize to God for our failures; the Sacrament of Penance is much more than an apology. It is a handing over our sin, letting it go, and opening ourselves to the mercy of God. It is about a celebration of God s mercy, allowing the Lord not just to forgive us, but to wash us clean in that divine mercy. Over this next week of Advent there will be several opportunities to prepare ourselves for the coming of Christ through the Sacrament of Penance. There are six communal celebrations of the Sacrament throughout the county. They are: Dec 11 - (Mon - 7 pm) Holy Spirit, Hamburg Dec 12 - (Tues - 7 pm) St. Augustine, Deerfield Twp. Dec 13 - (Wed - 7 pm) St. John, Hartland Dec 14 - (Thurs - 7 pm) St. Joseph, Howell Dec 16 - (Sat. 9 am) St. Patrick, Brighton Dec 18 - (Mon. - 7 pm) St. Mary Magdalen On the Saturdays in Advent, Penance is scheduled from 11 am until noon. Extra times and days will be added in the final week. ALPHA In September we began Alpha as a pilot project to see whether or not it would be a good fit for our parish. Over the fall, we had over 100 folks come together for a meal, short informational video and a time of faith sharing. As you heard this weekend, it was a very positive experience for the participants, one they would like to share with you. I truly hope you will consider signing up!! There will be gatherings on Wednesday mornings and Thursday evenings. Each session lasts 2 hours - including the meal! I ask you to consider participating. It will be a blessing for you, your family and for your growth in faith. CUSTODIAL WORK Mark Wolf, one of our part-time custodians, has decided to retire again. We are looking for someone to fill his position after the first of the year. If you, or someone you know, is interested in a part-time (18 hrs\wk) custodial job, please see the application on our web site. They found their temple destroyed and the city leveled. In today s reading, the prophet describes how God called him to encourage the people in this desperate time. 1 Thessalonians 5: 16-24 - Today s passage comes at the end of Paul s first letter to the Thessalonians. Just as a parent might give last minute instructions as their child heads out the door, so Paul has a list of last minute instructions for these people whom he loves. John 1: 6-8, 19-28 - As Advent progresses, the season moves from Jesus coming again at the end of time to the coming of Jesus in salvation history two millennia ago. This Sunday is dedicated to the coming of John the Baptist. The summary of today s gospel has the closest implications for the Church as it remembers Jesus coming, as John speaks of his ministry and of his relationship to Jesus. Reflect: What example do you give others to help them know Jesus? BLOOD DRIVE TODAY! Sunday, December 10, 2017 9:30 am - 3:30 pm 2

ST. MARY MAGDALEN RELIGIOUS FORMATION NEWS Roxanne Hundsrucker Today we celebrate the Second Sunday of Advent Be Watchful! Be Alert! Have you taken time to be watchful? Do you have a little Advent booklet to follow daily? It s not too late to slow down and prepare yourself for the ultimate celebration. My husband and I drove to Kansas for a very short visit with my daughter and granddaughter over the Thanksgiving weekend. We took them to see the movie The Star. I highly recommend it to all generations. It is an animated movie with a beautiful story of the Nativity. Great characters, voice overs, and a very good selection of traditional and contemporary Christmas music. Jesse Tree Para Liturgy: During our regular Religious Formation class times we will host a Jesse Tree Para Liturgy in the church (Para Liturgy may refer to any liturgical celebration outside the normal approved celebrations that would be conducted by a priest or deacon. Novenas, prayer services, Stations of the Cross, etc. could all fall into this category. They can be conducted by lay persons rather than clergy.) Bob Metz, retired DRE and member of our Parish Council and Formation Team, will lead the children in this beautiful service. I encourage everyone to join us this Wednesday at 5:15 or 7:15 pm or Thursday at 6:15 pm. You will love this wonderful service. We will have the Jesse Tree hanging in the church and a purple sheet will be on the table below that gives a short description and the readings. If you are not able to attend, please stop and take a look at the ornaments that represent key readings throughout salvation history. 2 or 3 More Cookie Bakers Needed I am in search of a few more volunteers to bake cookies or brownies one time or even to join a rotating group. It would be wonderful to be able to serve fresh baked cookies to our Confirmation Candidates & Youth Group members as we come together to share dinner, dessert & formation, Sunday evenings from January-April. If you are able to help please call Karen in the parish office to sign-up. YOUTH NEWS Margaret Callaghan WELLNESS QUOTE BRIGHTON, MI Our annual Winter Weekend Getaway is scheduled for January 26-28. The cost is $100 per participant. It is a fun weekend away to be with one another, hang out, play games, ski and unplug. The $100 covers the lodging and five meals. We will travel up to Luther, MI to stay at the same lodge we have rented for nearly 10 years now. Take a look at the website here; you may just want to rent it for yourself! http://edgettslodge.com/gallery-of-edgetts-lodge/ We are celebrating the Christmas holiday with a YG gathering for a gift exchange and for fun at the Riesser home in Milford. Details will be handed out during our regular Sunday evening meetings. The party is Friday, Dec. 22. Come February 11, we will be joining the 9 th grade religious formation classes for a parish-wide Youth Alpha. Think about being a part of this wonderful, spiritual journey with us. The video-led program will be an opportunity to grow in relationship with Jesus and with one another through small group table discussion. Something a little different than YG meetings is that attendance for the program is necessary. Each week builds on the last and the small group depends on consistency. Life happens and if something comes up, you ll be fine to miss one or two. All 9 th graders will participate through religious formation, all other youth should register with Margaret Callaghan at yminister1@gmail.com. Each small group will be led through discussion by a youth host and an adult helper. I am excited about this program and I pray that you will be a part of it. Be sure to stay up-to-date with the YG Remind text updates. Just text the message @stmmyg to 81010. EDGE Our next and only meeting in December is the 11 th and will be our annual Christmas party, EDGE style! Bring a $10 gender-neutral wrapped gift to share. We will have pizza and cake. Any student in 6-8 grade is welcome to join us 7-8:30 pm. I have chosen to be happy because it is good for my health. -Voltaire 4
