WILLIAM 6 CRABTREE IV (William 5 III, William 4 II, William H. 3, Thomas James 2, Samuel 1 ) was born in 1748 in Baltimore County, Maryland 9-11. He died on 05 Feb 1818 in Beaver Creek, Washington County, Virginia 1, 22. He married (1) HANNAH LYONS. He married (2) CATHERINE STARNES, daughter of Joseph Starnes and Catherine Carlock, after 01 Jan 1777 1, 9. She died in 1818 in Tazewell County, Virginia 11. William Crabtree IV served in the military (Lieutenant in the Revolutionary War 1 ). He served in the military (fought at the Battle of Kings Mountain). He died (may have died in Tazewell County, Virginia 9 ). Notes for William Crabtree IV: In a 3-page letter written 10 February 1844 that was included in the Abraham Crabtree Pension papers [R2418] Isaac Crabtree relates his own and Abraham's experiences as scouts in the Revolutionary War. They enlisted about June-July 1775. In this letter he mentions William Crabtree as an assistant, apparently to Captain James Thompson. The men were citizens of Washington County, Virginia and were stationed at Blackmore's Fort in Washington County. William Crabtree's will, recorded in Washington County, Virginia Will Book 4, p. 233 mentions: Thomas Price of Russell County had debt to William to be collected: daughter Polly (unmarried); son William Crabtree (unmarried); daughter Jane Crabtree (unmarried); wife Catherine; my children: Rebecca, Sarah, James, Margaret, Hannah, Betsy (had all received part of his estate previously); son-in-law Richard Roberts and son William Crabtree appointed executors; signed 4 December 1816; Witnesses: James Taylor, Jacob Lyon, Stephen Lyon. Exhibited in Washington County, Virginia court and approved on 17th Feb 1818 for William Crabtree, deceased. John Tate was surety for the $3000 bond for William Crabtree and Richard Roberts, executors. It is believed that this William Crabtree was one of the long hunters who was in a hunting party with Elisha Wallen in 1761. The station camp that Wallen established in the Powell Valley was the first known station established there in 1761. At this same location in 1773 Daniel Boone camped to wait for a group to join him from Castlewood. It was located at the mouth of Wallen's Creek at the ford of Powell's River. William is described by John Redd in a narrative about the Long Hunters as "a real backwoodsman, tall, slender and with slightly red hair." The Crabtrees lived on the Holston River with a large family, many with the same names, so it is hard to know for sure which William is being described, but most historians believe he was the son of William and Hannah Whitaker Crabtree. [Hamilton, Emory L.; "The Long Hunters" from Historical Sketches of Southwest Virginia; published by The Historical Society of Southwest Virginia] Catherine Starnes was counted in the census in 1820 in Washington County, Virginia (with her son William V). Proven on 5 June 1838 in Russell County, Virginia, by oaths of Edward White and William McGraw; ordered to be recorded by Mary Crabtree and William D. Hurt together with Meshack White and Richard Price entered bond. [Sutherland, Elihu Jasper; Abstracts of Wills of Russell County,Virginia from 1803-1860, published in Clintwood, Virginia, p.343] Abraham's Revolutionary War Pension Records state that he enlisted September 1776 in Washington County, Virginia into Captain Aaron Lewis Company, with Regiment Commander Colonel William Christy or Christian. He enlisted into the Continental Line of Virginia. He was attacked with fever at Long Island and the mercury used for treatment caused him to loss total use of his limbs for awhile. He had somewhat recovered by 8 November 1824, but was still unable to support himself by his own labor. In the pension records for Abraham is a letter written by John Crabtree, Abraham's administrator after his death. This letter states that he was filing a declaration to obtain for the heirs of Abraham the pension that he had been allowed, based on the act of Congress passed on 7th June 1832. In the letter John states that Abraham and Isaac Crabtree, brother of Abraham, had both entered service in Washington County, Virginia in 1775 under Captain James Thompson. Isaac was also receiving a pension and living at the edge of Wayne County, Kentucky near Clinton County, Kentucky. Abraham served by guarding the frontier against Indians and was stationed at "Blackaman's Fort" [now part of Abingdon] in Washington County, Virginia. He served as a scout in the area and back and forth to a place called Flat Licks. He served in this capacity until the last of November 1776. He was unable to return home until the Spring of 1777 because of illness. According to John Crabtree Abraham served not less than 12 months actual service as a militia soldier of the Virginia Militia. The letter also states that although Isaac Crabtree was almost entirely illiterate he was a representative in the legislature of Kentucky from Wayne County, Kentucky and was highly esteemed as a soldier in Virginia. John mentions three children of Abraham: Ruth Spear, Solomon Crabtree and Mary Crabtree, deceased. According to this letter by John Crabtree Abraham died on 2 May 1838. John Crabtree declares that he is the nephew of Abraham and the son of Isaac, Abraham's brother. Abraham did not make application for his daughter Mary to receive his pension because he needed the affidavit of his brother Isaac and Isaac was living away from Virginia in Overton County, Tennessee. A copy of Abraham's will was included in the papers. Affidavits from both Jacob Crabtree and Isaac Crabtree are submitted to the Cumberland County, Kentucky Court on 2 September 1830 testifying to the truth of Abraham's original pension application. William Crabtree and others appeared in court to testify to the truth of the amended declaration and to the credibility of Jacob and Isaac Crabtree. [Russell County, Virginia Law Order Book 10, p.148, dated 3 June 1834] In the Journal of the House of Delegates, Thursday, 26 November 1778, p.44 there is a petition #11 that is a request from Captain Aaron Lewis that Abraham Crabtree be paid at the same rate for the 112 day period of time that Abraham was sick in Lewis' house. Lewis states that Abraham Crabtree was on the way to the Cherokee towns and was seized with a nervous fever; he lay sick from 9 October until 28 January.
