We are beginning to wonder what is this food with which the sheep are to be fed? We know that Jesus came to give us eternal life. Last week we discovered that St. Peter said to Jesus, Lord, you have the words of eternal life, (See Jn 6: 68). So we sought to discover if this food is simply words. But the context revealed that St. Peter was referring to some very specific words. Peter was not speaking spontaneously one day when all was quiet and just decided to impress everyone with his evaluation of Jesus. He was not in deep thought and then suddenly announces something to the effect, Lord, I have been thinking and, well, I want to share my thoughts. I think your words at all times are beautiful and give eternal life. No, no! Unfortunately and sadly, the many Christian leaders that do not accept the apostolic tradition of the Eucharist must remove the context from Peter s answer to Jesus. The question that Jesus asked was: Do you also want to leave? The complete answer of St. Peter is: Master, to whom shall we go? You have the words of eternal life. This answer does not seem to fit the question. A more natural response would ask about to where we shall go. Instead, Peter asked about to whom we shall go. What prompted Jesus to ask the question about wanting to leave? Had other people been leaving? The Scriptures said that many of the disciples of Jesus had decided to leave. Why were they leaving? They were leaving because they had questions that Jesus did not answer in a way they appreciated. Here are their questions: How can this man give us his flesh to eat? and This saying is hard; who can accept it? What were the answers of Jesus? His answers caused them to leave and caused St. Peter to say, Lord, you have the words of eternal life. INVITATION TO INITIATION ARE YOU FULLY INITIATED INTO THE CHURCH? This means have you received all the Sacraments of Initiation BAPTISM, CONFIRMATION, AND FIRST EUCHARIST? If not contact the rectory on 301-336-3344.
