Pastor s Corner The joy of the gospel fills the hearts and lives of all who encounter Jesus. Those who accept his offer of salvation are set free from sin, sorrow, inner emptiness and loneliness. With Christ, joy is constantly born anew. Thus began Pope Francis first Apostolic Exhortation, Evangelii Gaudium. Joy, then, is to be first characteristic of the disciple-evangelizer. How often that is not the case! I once lived with a friar whose primary role was teaching us student brothers good public proclamation techniques. To look at him celebrate the Mass, you would think he was the happiest man in the world. Yet, if you encountered him in the house, you would think he just sucked on a lemon. If he didn t like your homily, he would dramatically say to you, Where s the good news?! Where this man failed was not in what he taught, but how he lived when he wasn t teaching. In other words, that joy that Pope Francis speaks of did not seem to permeate this friar s life. I was and am in no position to know if that was actually the case or not; I hope, for his sake, that my observation was incorrect. St. Dominic was known as the Joyful Friar. Accounts of his life are filled with examples of his infectious joy. His was not a facade of joy, but an authentic one. His successes came from the powerful combination of his eloquence and his readily apparent joy in his living relationship with Jesus. It is very telling that there are no transcripts of any of St. Dominic s homilies or exhortations, but abundant attestations to their effects. People remembered not what he said but how it was said, who was saying it and how it affected their lives. Dominic s life was not just voluminous, luxurious leaves of good intentions, words and deeds, but an abundant harvest of rich, ripe fruit. (cf. Luke 6:44-45 and Matthew 21:19) Let us then seek to follow St. Dominic s example and be Christians whose lives are marked with a true joy, rooted in our knowing Jesus and answering his call to go and make disciples of all nations. Parish News & Events Bicycle needed! Peace & Social Justice Rohullah, the refugee from Afghanistan who is currently living in Casa Francisca and who spoke at one of the parish Mission Community dinners last spring, would love to have a bike. He is about 5'6 and thinks that a 17" bike would be a good fit for him. Does anyone have one to donate? A member of the YAMMs ministry has generously provided Rohullah with a helmet and lock. The Services are at 8:00 a.m. and again at 5:30 p.m. Invitation to join our Rosary after daily Masses You are invited to join us in our daily Rosary after morning Mass during the week. Psalm 100 A Psalm of thanksgiving Make a joyful noise to the Lord, all the earth. Worship the Lord with gladness; come into his presence with singing. Know that the Lord is God. It is he that made us, and we are his, we are his people, and the sheep of his pasture. Enter his gates with thanksgiving, and his courts with praise. Give thanks to him, bless his name. For the Lord is good; his steadfast love endures forever, and his faithfulness to all generations.

Faith & Spirituality Diocesan News & Events An excerpt from Evangelii Gaudium (The Joy of the Gospel) Apostolic Exhortation of the Holy Father FRANCIS St. Albert the Great Chapter of the Dominican Laity We invite you to join us in celebration ST. DOMINIC S DAY! The Bishops of Oceania asked that the Church develop an understanding and a presentation of the truth of Christ working from the traditions and cultures of the region and invited all missionaries to work in harmony with indigenous Christians so as to ensure that the faith and the life of the Church be expressed in legitimate forms appropriate for each culture. We cannot demand that peoples of every continent, in expressing their Christian faith, imitate modes of expression which European nations developed at a particular moment of their history, because the faith cannot be constricted to the limits of understanding and expression of any one culture. It is an indisputable fact that no single culture can exhaust the mystery of our redemption in Christ.
