John Sier or Sayers c.1820-1877 Biographical details A John SIER was baptised at St Thomas Church Bristol, on November 19 th, 1820, the son of Thomas Sier, (later a tin man) and his wife Mary. They had apparently also baptised a Mary Anne Sier on 31 March 1816 in Bristol, according to familysearch. He has not been found in the 1841 or 1851 census returns. At some point before 1852 he had married an un-traced wife and was still registered as married in 1861 when living alone in Worcester at Lowesmoor coal wharf, even as he was fathering children on Ellen Smith, of Worcester. He finally married their mother Ellen Smith in 1863 when registered as a widower, so his first and unfound wife must have died between 1861 and 1863. He had certainly appeared in Worcester by 1852, with the birth of illegitimate Eliza, surnamed Smith later to be married to John Cottrill. She is listed as being born in St. Andrew s Parish in the later 1861 census. The 1861 census shows John Sier living alone in Lowesmoor Wharf, whilst his partner, Ellen Smith and her three illegitimate children are shown in on the other side of the city living in Pumphrey s yard, with Ellen s mother Charlotte and step-father, Thomas Swift. 2 Their neighbour, Lancet Smith, is a brother to Ellen. 3 Figure 2: 1861 census - John Sier of Lowesmoor Wharf 1861, Claines Parish, Worcester, Lowesmoor Wharf RG9 2108 Schedule 263 John SIER Head Married 40 Waggoner to Haulier Bristol Somersetshire Figure 3: 1861 census - Ellen Smith of Pumphrey's Yard 1861 36 Pumphrey s Yard Thomas Swift Head Married 50 Glover Wor St Andrew Charlotte Swift Wife Married 62 Gloveress?? Lancelot and Charlotte Smith are listed as the parents of Ellen Smith at her baptism in St Clement s Church Worcester on the 29 April 1824. A Charlotte Smith married Thomas Swift in Worcester during the March quarter of 1843, 2 the implication being that Charlotte was Ellen s remarried Mother, and that Lancelot had died by 1843. I was racking my brains trying towork out why Haskew Place sounded familiar.i had been looking for a Louisa SIER, who after marrying Walter BONDin1876, then leaving him, met up with my GG grandfather Gregory PRICE who was some 35 years older than her! 11 Charlotte is Ellen Smith s remarried Mother. Lancelet appears to be dead. Page 12 of 31

1881 census I found two Louisa SIERs in Worcester in 1871, the one who was then 14 was the daughter of John SIER in Haskew Place, and the 17 year old was the daughter of Charles SIER in Boughton Street and her age more closely matches my Louisa. Both of them were working as gloveresses. Louisa BOND was Gregory PRICE's "housekeeper" in 1881, and Louisa PRICE, his widow", in 1891.However his death certificate reveals the truth! Gregory died in 1888 of chronic bronchitis and exhaustion, he was 67. The informant was Louisa PRICE widow of the deceased" but this was crossed out and replaced with Louisa BOND, present at the death"! Walter BOND had gone back to live with his parents in Boughton and was still there in 1891. By 1901 Louisa was the wife of William ABBOTT, he was only 13 years older than her. I am not sure how legal that marriage was, I think it happened before Walter BOND died! I am interested to know whether the two SIER families are connected. Even though Louisa is not in my direct line, she did have several of Gregory PRICE's children who are related to me. Page 13 of 31
