Transcription:

I can t believe it s finally over! Grand Knight s Corner Brothers and Friends, I can t tell you what an honor and privilege it has been to serve as your Grand Knight for the past two years. Words cannot express the gratitude I feel for all the members who have given of themselves and their time to make these past two years the success that they were. Your Council continues to be a recognized force in the area and the State. I was happy to pilot the ship to achieve the goals and successes we have made, I can t stress enough, that we owe it all to the dedicated members, who show up and participate in our valuable programs. As I leave office, if I could have one wish for the Council s future, it would be to see more of your smiling faces at all of our activities. The famous author Rudyard Kipling wrote, For the strength of the pack is the wolf, and the strength of the wolf is the pack. What this means in terms of our Order is that the Council has a lot to offer you and other Catholic gentlemen as members, but these things are only of value if you take advantage of them. We can t help you take full advantage of your membership if you don t fully participate. By the same token, the Council can only achieve all it is capable of without your strong and steadfast support. This month s Knight of the Month is PGK Frank Carchedi. PGK Carchedi is one of our most active Knights. It is difficult to remember the few of our many activities that he has not been a part of, this year. He is a long term member of the kitchen crew and the expert behind all of our Italian Dinners to say the least. He supports our Bingo program, working at least one session a month, but usually more. He is a long time member of the "Tuesday Crew" which works hard every week to help keep our hall clean and most of our routine maintenance chores taken care of. He's one of our brothers who regularly serves funeral masses in church. He fills in with our Degree Team from time to time. He has been supporting the Ohio State Council as District Deputy #4 for the past four years and next year will server as the registration chairman for the 119th Ohio State Council Annual Convention. Thanks PGK Carchedi for all you do. Our Family of the Month is PGK Don and Holly Banford. PGK Banford is a constant reminder of the service portion of being a Knight. He can be found with the Kitchen Crew, helping with Bingo always ready when called upon. His wife Holly serves on the parish finance committee and their daughter Madeline serves as a Eucharistic minister. and was a previous Youth of the Year Blue Coat for her scholastic and volunteer efforts. Don also serves as the parish festival setup chairman and his family works the entire festival weekend. He is usually the first to come and the last to leave. His family is a great support to the parish. ACTIVITIES FOURTH OF JULY PARADE & PICNIC Members of the Council, along with 4th Degree members of Monsignor Buckley Assemble will once again march in the Fairborn Independence Day Parade. As always our entry will consist of a truck and a trailer and we ll gather at the hall to decorate it at 8:00 AM on the 4th. We have to be in our place in the parade line by 9:00 AM. The location varies every year, so you can either meet up at the Hall before we leave or call PGK Milliron @ 937-609-9068. As usual, you are welcome to ride in the truck or trailer. Some of us will also walk. After the parade, we ll have our annual Council Family Picnic back at the Hall. Meat, bread and beverages will be provided by the Council. Please bring a covered dish of your choice to share. We ll have a few games and a lot of fellowship and good times for the whole family. 2017 MEMORIAL GOLF TOURNAMENT The council s Golf Tournament held in memory of numerous brother knights who used the game of golf to foster unity and brotherhood will be held on Saturday, August 12th, at the Locust Hills GC in Springfield. Shotgun start time is 8:30AM. The cost for this 4-man scramble for members and their guests is $60 each which pays for your green fees, cart, dinner, refreshments and prizes. A mulligan package, skins game, and 50/50 drawing will also be available. Locust Hills will serve your choice of steak or ½ chicken dinner for dinner. Tournament chairman, PGK Steve Wal, will take your reservation at 322-4246 or sign up in the council lounge. Come join us for some friendly competition, fun, and remembrance with your brother knights at Locust Hills on Saturday, August 12th. Lord please help me not to waste the life you ve given me. Work within me, allow me to be a blessing to someone today. Ut in omnibus glorificetus Deus CORPORATE COMMUNION AND ROSARY Our Fifth Sunday Corporate Communions and Rosaries have been growing in popularity, we will continue them this year and our first of 2017-2018 will be Sunday July 30th at the 11:15 Mass. Last years events were well attended, however it is disappointing that some of the brothers and families sit in different areas of the church. One of my goals as 3724 s GK this year is to really push our involvement as a council with the Parish, to that end I am putting a request in now that all council members on the 5th Sunday, sit in the front on the right hand side of the church, your families are welcome and encouraged to sit with us, this will help us show our dedication to the Parish community. Please wear a fraternal shirt if you have one if not, Fay at Fairborn Alterations & Embroidery 413 W. Main St. Fairborn, will be happy to embroider the 3724 logo on any shirt you wish and usually charges around 10.00 for her efforts. They are open from 11 to 5:30 Mon thru Fri. If you wish to pray the rosary before mass we would ask that you be seated by 10:30. Brother Herb Edwards is extraordinarily good at leading us in this all important prayer. KNIGHT OF THE YEAR BANQUET The capstone event of the Fraternal Year was held on 17 June 2017 in the Mary Help of Christians Parish Center. Dinner was supplied by Christy's Catering and as usual fully enjoyed by all. Worthy Past Grand Knight and current Lounge Manager Steve Wal tended bar with his usual aplomb. Worthy Past District Deputy, Past Grand Knight, Past everything you can think of Frank Carchedi was this years honoree. The event was well attended by his brother knights and their families and closed out the year's activities on an extremely high note. MHC FESTIVAL BOOTHS The MHC Festival is once again upon us and as always volunteers are needed in all areas; Setup Crew, Beer Booth, Burgers Booth, Funnel Cakes and all other areas the council helps with. Sign up sheets are located in the Lounge and be prepared and willing to receive the assorted phone calls from the various chairman. The festival this year will be during the July 22, 23, and 24th weekend.

I am thankful to PGK Frank Carchedi who has offered to take up the editor s post for me so that I can concentrate more fully on the duties of GK for the new council year. It has been an honor to serve as your council editor for the last seven years. As a US Navy Veteran I have always taken a lot of pride in editing a newsletter named after one of the greatest ships in history, The Santa Maria What a tour of duty it has been, Fraternally, Gene 3

Holy Father s Prayer Intentions Offered in Solidarity with Pope Francis 4 That our brothers and sisters who have strayed from the faith, through our prayer and witness to the Gospel, may rediscover the merciful closeness of the Lord and the beauty of the Christian life.

INSURANCE CORNER Have you ever heard the expression lazy days of summer? While the hot weather may encourage a slower paced life, in many ways summer can be the busiest time of the year. And being busy, it s easy to forget about such things as reviewing your life insurance coverage. The purpose of this column is to encourage you to meet with your Knights of Columbus agent, before the end of the summer. Whether you have life insurance with the Order, or just want to make sure your coverage meets your needs and goals. If you ve had any life changes since you last bought a policy (new home, new child, new job, etc.), chances are your life insurance needs to be updated. Your agent can work with you to make sure you have the coverage you need at a price you can afford. It is a rare day indeed when you cannot save money with K of C coverage. Time spent with your Knights of Columbus agent is time well-spent. But, make the call today, because summer is not only busy, it s also probably not going to get less busy!! Linda, Alexis, & Tom Engle Religious of the Year Ray Ronan State Deputy Collins and GK Milliron Good of the Order Readers will notice that the good of the order section is smaller this month. The list of prayer intentions had grown so large we almost need an old-fashioned parchment scroll to unroll before each newsletter printing. A decision was made by the council officers to publish the Health and Healing requests in conjunction with the council book of prayers kept at the hall. If you have not been to a meeting and have a name you wish to include in the Santa Maria prayer intentions, please call the council hall and leave a message or send an email to Santamaria@3724kofc.org. Repose of the Soul: Health and Healing: Kathy Justice, Martha Karhoff, Mei Lin wife of Bro. John Young, PGK Jim McCoy, Bro. Dennis Kelly, PGK John Whytal and wife Brenda.
