NEW for 2015! Boker Tov Rosh Hashanah and Boker Tov Yom Kippur Children s Services, 9 am a new time for children and families to celebrate the holidays together before morning services, high holiday experiences and childcare begin Erev Rosh Hashanah Mindful Service, 7:15 pm NO Rosh Hashanah Afternoon Children s or Youth Services New Congregational Tashlich Experience at Creve Coeur Park s Taco Bell Shelter, Rosh Hashanah Afternoon, 4pm Dear Friends, Our Shaare Emeth staff and leadership have worked hard to prepare for the coming Days of Awe and to make our services and programs meaningful and accessible. Please take a moment to carefully read and review the information in this booklet and to respond as needed. Please note that, like the last two years, we will offer only one evening service on Rosh Hashanah so that we can welcome the New Year together! In addition we have added new service options to address the needs of our congregational family, so please review the schedule carefully. The High Holidays are a time when we gather with our fellow congregants in prayer, study and celebration of a new year, joining together in our beautiful building and surrounded by the music, joy and deep meaning of these Days of Awe. We hope you will make the time to join us with your presence and your voice as we continue the important traditions of our people. Again this year, we extend the warmest possible Welcome! We open our doors to all who wish to join us during the High Holidays as we do throughout the year. All members of the Congregation and all guests and visitors are welcome to join us for our services; no tickets are necessary. We hope that visitors and guests will feel inspired to join and support our community throughout the coming year, and, of course, we welcome your generous support to make our work possible. We depend on the generosity, participation and energy of each member of our community. We hope that you will use these High Holidays as a time of personal renewal and rededication, a time to bring more meaning to your life. We look forward to you becoming even more active in the community and life of Congregation Shaare Emeth during the coming year! We can t wait to wish you L shanah Tovah in person. We hope and pray that the coming year will be illed with blessings and peace. Congregational Yom Kippur Afternoon Service, 2:30 pm (led by SETYG) James M. Bennett, Rabbi Greg Yawitz, President 4

Teshuvah, Teillah, Tzedakah Repentance, Prayer and Righteous Acts Our tradition offers the great hope that Teshuvah/repentance, teillah/ prayer, and tzedakah/righteous acts can truly change our fate and improve the world. Our Shaare Emeth High Holiday services and programs strive to help you make each of these traditional Jewish concepts a part of your life this year. Teshuvah/Repentance: The traditional Jewish idea of teshuvah involves irst returning to one s truest self and doing the dificult work of self-examination to become the people we wish to be. Repentance, in the Jewish tradition, requires that we acknowledge those areas in which we can improve, make restitution or make peace with those we may have harmed, and inally, that we commit ourselves to not repeating the same misdeeds when given the opportunity. True teshuvah turns us irst to others then to ourselves, and inally to God in our quest for return and change. Teillah/Prayer: Every moment of spiritual practice can open up the Gates of Prayer. Through communal gathering and worship, song, meditation, personal prayer, silence and many other modes of teillah, we can ind space in ourselves for the Divine to ill our spirits with joy, gratitude and peace. Our worship services and other opportunities for such practice are unique opportunities to embark on this journey as the new year begins. Tzedakah/Righteous Acts: The traditional Jewish act of doing tzedakah, by giving generously of our own riches and by volunteering our time and energies to improve the world, truly fulills the idea of Rightousness. Literally, making the world right, correcting injustices wherever they may be, and doing the work of tikkun olam, ixing a broken world. Throughout the year, and especially as the new year begins, we invite you to practice this important work. Among our many tzedakah opportunities are our Annual High Holiday Food Drive and our partnership with the Oak Hill Elementary School. Please join us in these acts of tzedakah. Fight Hunger, Feed Hope. High Holiday Food Drive September 13-24, 2015 This is the fast I desire...to share your bread with the hungry. Isaiah 58:6-7 For one in eight people in the St. Louis area, hunger is a reality. About 135,000 kids in St. Louis are at risk for hunger, according to the U.S. Census Bureau enough children to ill Busch Stadium three times. Of the children enrolled in St. Louis Public Schools, 85 percent rely on free or reduced-cost meal programs. Many of these kids go home to little or no food. September 13 through 24 Erev Rosh Hashanah through Yom Kippur our lobby will be turned into a food collection area. Please bring a bag of nutritious canned or non-perishable foods to Shaare Emeth during your High Holiday visits. Monetary donations are also welcomed. Please make checks payable to Shaare Emeth Food Drive. All food and money donations will be split between The Harvey Kornblum Jewish Food Pantry, St. Louis Food Bank and MAZON: A Jewish Response to Hunger. Want To Do More? Volunteer to help collect the donations and pack boxes with food. To help, please contact Colleen Isele at cnisele@yahoo.com or 636-220-4385. 5

Elul The Hebrew month of Elul, leading up to the High Holidays, is traditionally a time of introspection and preparation for these Days of Awe. We invite you to join in this personal and communal preparation this year. Return: A Blog for Elul August 16 September 13 blog-for-elul.blogspot.com Follow our daily blog during the month of Elul as some of our clergy, staff and members share their insights on preparing our souls for this holy time of year. Subscribe to the blog to receive short inspirations, meditations or texts to inspire you and help you prepare for the New Year, sent directly to your inbox. Visit blog-for-elul.blogspot.com and enter your email in the text box on the right that says Follow by Email. If you subscribed last year and did not unsubscribe, you don t need to do anything; you will automatically receive these inspirations starting Elul 1. Providing Students with Supplies to Learn Book bags, notebooks, pencils Many of the students at Oak Hill Elementary wouldn t have had the basic school supplies for learning writing, math or any other subject except for your generous donations to last year s High Holidays school supply drive. We are beginning our third year of partnering with Oak Hill Elementary School through the Faith Based Program of St. Louis Public Schools. We have provided a teacher appreciation lunch, delivered holiday gifts to needy families, tutored children during the year and provided students with much needed school supplies. Why did you want to donate to us? a student at Oak Hill Elementary School asked last year in a thank you note for the supplies. Because Tzedakah and acts of kindness are the equivalent of all the mitzvot of the Torah, says the Jerusalem Talmud, Pe ah 1:1, and we see that there are many children who do not have the necessary supplies to learn. This Rosh Hashanah, we ask that you bring one or more of these new, unopened items for the students at Oak Hill Elementary: OR Book bags 3 ring binders Highlighters Glue/glue sticks Notebooks Pencils/pens/markers Crayons Erasers Loose leaf paper Pencil cases Pocket folders Hand sanitizer On Rosh Hashanah, visit the Oak Hill tree in the lobby, take one or more of the leaves designating additional needed items, and them bring on Yom Kippur. If you have any questions, please contact Laura Kaplan at 314-997-4821 or Debbie Bram at 314-692-5345. With your help, we ll make sure local students have what they need for another year of learning. 6

(e.g., separation issues, anxiety, sensory challenges and IEP) We work very hard to accommodate all children so that everyone can enjoy a meaningful experience. You can help us do this by using the FastPass pre-registration to sign your child up online and letting us know on the form what kinds of accommodations your child may need. This allows us time to set all children up for success. With advance notice, 14

we can create visual schedules, train the staff on inclusion techniques, hire shadows if necessary, and a variety of other accommodations. We hope you will take the time to ill out the questions on the Pre-registration form so that we can begin planning for your child s speciic needs. We will of course attempt to make accommodations for walk-ins when necessary, however we are very limited in what supports we can provide without proper notice. If you would like to discuss this in more detail, contact Emily Cohen, 314-692-5365 or ecohen@sestl.org. How much does High Holiday Experience cost? *NEW THIS YEAR* High Holiday Experience will be free for all families, regardless of when you register. However, our new FastPass online pre-registration will save you time and stress the day of the program and offer some additional beneits (see below). How do I register? *NEW THIS YEAR* FastPass pre-registration available online at www.shaare-emeth.org/ HHDchildren through Tuesday, Sept. 8*! Walk-ins are welcome the day of High Holiday Experience. However, pre-registering online will allow you these beneits: Skip the check-in line and proceed directly to your child s classroom. We will email you the correct room number prior to each holiday. When you arrive, you can head right to their room to pick up their name tag and check in there. Request your child be placed with their friends. When you pre-register online you can name a couple of friends with whom you would like your child placed. We will try to place them with their friends if their friends have pre-registered as well. We cannot guarantee requests for walk-ins as we must stay within stafing ratios in each room. *Online pre-registration closes Tuesday, Sept. 8, at 5 p.m. After that time, you are welcome to show up that morning as a walk-in and register at the check-in table.
