Sanctuaire de Lourdes Lourdes 2008 with Edith Stein INTERNATIONAL PILGRIMAGE "Drawing from the Wells of Salvation " On the occasion of the 150th anniversary of the visions in Lourdes, and of the 10th anniversary of Edith Stein s Canonization Saint Therese Benedicte of the Cross From Wednesday, August 6 th to Sunday, August 10 th 2008 Introduction to Edith Stein Group Discussions and Sharing Experiencing the Shrine in Lourdes Symposia/Conferences for researchers, writers and philosophers Art, cultures and communion Mission and service Prayers and celebrations Testimonies 2

To celebrate the 150th Anniversary of the visions in Lourdes and the 10th Anniversary of the canonization of St Therese Benedicte of the Cross, Edith Stein, and 10 years after it was founded, the Edith Stein Institute is organizing a pilgrimage to Lourdes around the theme At the Wells of Salvation. The event will be presided over by Bishop Olivier de Berranger, Bishop of Saint-Denis-en- France, and supported by Bishop Jacques Perrier, Bishop of Tarbes-Lourdes. The international pilgrimage, Lourdes 2008 with Edith Stein, is designed for anyone with an interest in Edith Stein or the various themes connected to her life: education, philosophy, femininity, social action, Judaism, the Cross, inner/spiritual life, the Carmelite Order, Peace The pilgrimage is an attempt to gather in Lourdes, on the occasion of the Shrine s 150th Anniversary, the various people and associations following Edith Stein s steps. It will be an opportunity for us all to meet, share our experiences and praise God for the gift He made to the world by giving us Edith Stein. 3

PROGRAMME LOURDES 2008 WITH EDITH STEIN The pilgrimage will revolve around two main themes: - The Mysteries of the Rosary: mysteries of light on Thursday, the Sorrowful mysteries on Friday, the Joyful mysteries on Saturday, and the Glorious mysteries on Sunday. - The Way of the Holy Week: the Last Supper on Thursday, the Crucifixion and death on Friday, the Great Silence on Saturday, and the Resurrection on Sunday. Along these two lines, we will meditate on the roots of our faith, drawing from the Wells of Salvation as a source of strength to set to serving Humanity. 4

1. Keynote of the Pilgrimage : The Church in Mission among the Nations This year, the Shrine is inviting the pilgrims to engage with one of the twelve themes of the Jubilee. The Edith Stein pilgrimage will focus on the following: the Church in Mission among the Nations. Given the versatility of Edith Stein s figure, there are many ways of exploring these themes: whether at the crossroads between Judaism and Christianity, or in a daily commitment in the secular world, we are in this world to serve Humanity, in Edith Stein s own words. 1 Pope Jean Paul II: «Her encounter with Christianity did not lead her to disown her Jewish roots, quite the contrary : it helped her rediscover it in its richness/beauty/fullness. In fact, her entire path to Christian perfection is imbued not only with her human solidarity with her people, but also with a real spiritual sharing in the vocation of Abraham s sons, characterized by the mystery of the divine Call, and the irrevocable gifts from God (see RM 11, 29). More particularly, she fully embraced the suffering of the Jewish people even as it increased under the fierce Nazi persecution, which remains beside other atrocious expressions of Totalitarian regimes- one of the darkest and most shameful pages of Europe s 20 th century history. [ ] She experienced her deportation and execution in the notorious concentration camp of Auschwitz-Birkenau as a personal sharing in the Crucifixion. Her voice) mingled with that of all the victims of this horrible tragedy, and was united with Christ s own scream on the Cross, which mysteriously gives to human suffering a lasting fruitfulness. Her holiness will forever be associated with her violent death, united with all those who died with her.» 1 1 Edith Stein, Vie d une famille juive, Ad Solem-Cerf,Page 208. 5

Today we turn to Therese-Benedicte of the Cross, grateful for her sacrifice as an innocent victim, her imitation of the sacrificed Lamb and her outcry against all violations of the fundamental rights of the person, on the one hand, and her testimony to the renewed vision of a common ground between Christians and Jews, on the other, which, in the wake of Vatican II, is facing a promising future of mutual openness. Making Edit Stein Co-patroness of Europe today is an invitation to the people of the Old Continent to follow this example of respect, tolerance, openness, that enables peoples to understand and accept each other overcoming barriers of racial cultural and religious diversity, in order to build a more fraternal society» 2. Bishop Olivier de Berranger : Will Europe hear Edith Stein s message or will it let itself be continuously carried away by the sole attraction of material riches? How will Europe spiritually raise from its ashes after the 20 th century World Wars that led other peoples of the World to be taken over by totalitarian regimes? There have already been peace-makers and champions of justice. Economists, politicians, scholars, men of faith, all have a part to play. But so do families, children, the humble people from cities and provinces alike. Will France with its colourful framework of migrants be able to provide and follow examples of authentic humanity? 6

Who is Edith Stein? Edith Stein was born on October 12th 1891, on Yom Kippour Day (Jewish celebration of Forgiving) in Breslau (now Wrocław in Poland), and gassed on August 9th 1942 in Auschwitz. Edith Stein is a German philosopher of Jewish origins. A disciple of Husserl, she converted to Catholicism and became a researcher in theology. She was beatified by Pope John Paul II on May 1 st 1987 in Cologne, and canonized on October 11th 1998 in Rome, then declared co-patron saint of Europe on October 1st 1999. As Pope John Paul II said during the celebration of her beatification in Cologne, Edith Stein is "a daughter of Israel, who, during the Nazi persecutions remained lovingly and fervently united with our Crucified Lord as a Catholic and with her people as a Jew". On October 11th 2006, Pope Benedict XVI blessed a large statue of Saint Thérèse Bénédicte of the Cross (Edith Stein) that now stands in the Vatican, in the outer part of the apse at St Peter s Basilica, together with the statues of the other Patron Saints of Europe. Deep roots in her Jewish history, great friendships, philosophy as a life-long mission, the gradual discovery of inner life, a political, feminist and educational commitment against anti-semitism and the Totalitarian regime ruling Germany in her days, joining the Carmelite Order ( ) being true to herself, becoming a real human being. Such were Edith Stein s plans as a student, and this is what she remained committed to until death» 4. 4 Cécile Rastoin, Edith Stein, Enquête sur la Source, Cerf, 2007. Note de l éditeur. 10

What is the Edith Stein Institute? www.edithstein.fr The Edith Stein Institute is a Catholic non-profit making association created in 1998 in an attempt to follow Edith Stein s spiritual teachings based on the Science of the Cross as a life-long commitment. The institute s canonical statutes were approved by Bishop Olivier de Berranger, Bishop of Saint Denis in France in May 2007. A Short History The idea of promoting and putting into practice Edith Stein s message in today s society came into shape during a symposium organised by the Ecole Cathédrale (Paris) in 1998, on the year when Edith Stein (Sainte Thérèse-Bénédicte of the Cross) was canonised. The project was approved by Bishop Olivier de Berranger (coordinator of this symposium), and a group started gathering on a regular basis in Saint Ouen (Saint Denis dioceses) to try and put this intuition into practice with the support of the Carmelite monastery of Avon. Ecole Edith Stein augabon Thus the Friends of Edith Stein organized several years in a row a variety of events aiming at setting up various development projects in Africa, and more particularly in Gabon. Thanks to these actions, international and local volunteers have taken up the lead of Catholic boarding schools and health centers. 11

At the same time, the Edith Stein Institute also cooperated with other Edith Stein associations in Europe and throughout the world to organize three pilgrimages «in Edith Stein s footsteps» in 2003 (Holland and Germany), 2004 (Germany and Poland), and 2005 for the World Youth Day in Cologne. Following the transfer of its main center from St Ouen to the Diocesan Center of Bondy (Seine saint Denis), the Edith Stein Institute has concentrated its efforts on the support of the children from Sindara (www.sindara.com) and Saint Anne (www.sainteannegabon.com) in Gabon. The Power of the Cross, at the heart of Edith Stein s message, seems to be a source of strength, and to pave the way for the spiritual future of Africa, this Crucified Continent (The spiritual future of Africa, this Crucified Continent in the words of St Therese-Benedicte de la Croix, seems to find its strength and its voice in The Power of the Cross, at the heart of Edith Stein s message ) The friends of Edith Stein also strive to establish deep bonds of friendship during their various events and exchanges, and in the development of their links/affiliation to the Carmelite Order. The Canonical Statutes of the Edith Stein Institute were approved by the Bishop of Saint-Denis-en-France on May 1st, 2007. Mission Edith Stein au Gabon 12
