Young Church Religious Educa on Reflec ons St. Barnabas Youth by Simeon Willis March for Life, Washington D.C. January 27, 2017 We are again a ending the Na onal March for Life this January, leaving on the 26th and returning on the 28th via bus. Please sign up in the social hall as soon as possible as sea ng is limited (we have other churches joining us). It is important to give a powerful message of our peaceful and loving resolve to Donald Trump about how we see dignity in every life and this issue is of top concern. We march for those who cannot. Join us for Christmas Caroling on Christmas Day! The youth group will be visi ng The Oaks nursing home on 3864 Sweeten Creek to sing for the residents. O en mes the residents have people sing for them before Christmas but are feeling lonely on the day of Christ s birth. It is the perfect day to bring the love and joy of the Savior to them! We will meet at The Oaks at 3:00pm, and then proceed to St. Barnabas for a cookie party at 4:00pm. All are welcome to join us! TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION A mong the Catholics seeking religious freedom in America were the Carrolls of Maryland, who arrived in 1649 from Ireland via England. Charles Carroll, born in Annapolis in 1737, was the only Catholic signer of the Declara on of Independence, and was the longest surviving signer. As was the custom for English Catholics, he a ended English schools in Belgium and later university in France. By the me he signed the Declara on, he was the richest man in America, and his decision to sign would hardly go unno ced by the king. Because Carroll was so wealthy and because he was a Catholic, he had more to lose than the others. Those who signed became traitors to the Crown and risked losing everything. It is said that someone grumbled that there were many men in the world named Charles Carroll, and he could dodge responsibility if he had to. For that reason, he added a flair to his signature, of Carrollton, making it clear that he put everything at risk. His cousin John, also an ardent supporter of the American Revolu on, was ordained a Jesuit priest and returned to Maryland at the outbreak of hos li es. Upheavals in Europe forced the Jesuit order to dissolve, leaving Carroll a secular priest. Ul mately, it was John Carroll who was asked to organize the Catholic Church in the new na on. No one was be er posi oned for this task, a cultured man from an esteemed family, a cherished friend of Benjamin Franklin and George Washington, and a man so thoroughly a uned to an undercurrent of an Catholicism in the colonies that he could charm powerful people to a new point of view. Rev. James Field, Copyright J. S. Paluch Co. Our Lord Jesus Christ, King of the Universe ember 20, 2016 I rejoiced because they said to me, We will go up to the house of the Lord. Psalm 122:1 GOD S HEALING JUSTICE A n old expression holds that the sun warmed stone heals. Perhaps. But Malachi explains that only dark, sunless days are in store for those who do not find a place for God in their lives. Conversely, he tells us that the warmth and light of God s healing jus ce await those who fear the Lord. That s a pre y comfor ng no on especially now in the already short and growing even shorter days of ember. It s the sun warmed stone, and then some. Paul speaks to us of jus ce as well, but points out that it is not a passive thing. To be treated justly, we need to do our fair share. If we are diligent and persevere we will be rewarded with and by the fruits of our labor. Lastly, Luke, too, tells us to persevere in faith, this me and our lives will be secure in God regardless of how we are treated by our enemies. Copyright J. S. Paluch Co.
