We all realize that a major goal as disciples and as members of this parish is to welcome new people into the faith and into this parish Community. What do you think we might do to become even more welcoming than we are? In what way(s) can we appeal to people who are not already here and help them grow in their relationship with God? You can let any member of the Writing Team know your ideas or email them to the Pastoral Council pastoral.council@ladyofhopemaine.org Your Writing Team Members are: Cindy Russell, Barbara Galardo, Dave Reese, John Mullen, William Burke, Mary King, Jim Willey, Rob Kennedy-Jensen, Fr Vince Curtin, Mary Cafazzo, Fr Paul Women s Fellowship Christmas Party Our Lady of Hope Women s Fellowship Christmas Party will be held on Wednesday, December 6. Parish Bazaar - A Very Big Thanks Our Parish Bazaar (Nov 11) was busy and happy day. Thanks to the many parishioners and friends and members of the community who came through the doors. It was like "downtown at Christmas time when I was a child." The "crew" led by Paul Leblond was wonderful and extraordinarily generous in their gifts of time, energy and creativity. We had a number of parish youth both working and attending. The kitchen crew had a great day and "sold out" of most everything. Thanks to all who made crafts, donated baked goods, helped in any way and to all who bought tickets. Fr Paul SJ "Big Bazaar THANK YOU To all the volunteers, contributors and parishioners who assisted, baked or donated to our annual Christmas Bazaar, I want to personally thank all of you. Final numbers are not yet ready as we are still paying bills but thank you for all your support for this annual event. Our bazaar does not work without the many faces behind the scenes. Thank you so much for helping to keep our parish strong and moving forward financially. Peace always Paul Leblond, chairperson." Parking Lot Project - NEWS! Because of the critical need to repair (really in fact re-construct) the parking lot serving St. Pius Church and our Hall, we have made a commitment to a contractor to begin work this spring. We have applied for and been granted a loan from the Diocese for the project cost $108,000. This has been designated a Capital Fund Project, so we are able to raise money for this purpose that is not subject ot the usual diocesan assessment. So EVERY CENT RAISED will go to pay off this loan. The terms of the loan are 4% interest over a 10 year re-payment period. Obviously the sooner we can pay off the loan, the less interest we will be charged. Our Parking Lot Challenge is the first of what will have to be a series of fund-raising events to cover this necessary project. We can't cover the $1000c monthly payment out of regular income. At this point we have raised $2790.00 from 18 donors toward the Challenge given us by a parishioner: "Raise $5000 by mid- December, and I will match that." We are nearing our target date, but still have a good ways to go to meet the Challenge. Make your contribution this week. Be sure to label it "Parking Lot Challenge." Thanks to you who have made your gift already. Advent Directed Retreat December 3 to December 9, 2017 This year at OLH Parish we are beginning Advent with a Week of Directed Prayer, it will enable the participants to get into the Advent Season and to deepen their relationship with God. A team of Jesuits will help interested parishioners in a retreat which you can do at home. The retreat will begin with a group meeting on Sunday, December 3rd. in the hall at St. Pius X. at 1:30 PM. During the week (Monday - Friday), each person making the retreat also will meet with a Jesuit Spiritual Director for 30 minutes on Monday, Wednesday and Friday. Your director will discuss prayer with you and go over the prayer for subsequent days of the retreat. On Saturday, December 9th, all participants will gather at St. Pius X at 10:00 AM for a prayer service and sharing about this prayer retreat. PICK UP A REGISTRATION FORM AT THE BACK OF THE CHURCH. For more information please call Fr Vince Curtin, S.J. at 207-358-7577 or the parish office at 207-797-7026. Return your registration form to the parish office or drop it in the Sunday offertory basket by Wednesday, November 29th. You can register also on the parish website. Back Cove Bible Study Jean Leonard will be facilitating a Bible Study session at her home in Back Cove at 29 Sawyer St. during Advent season. Focus will be on the readings from Isaiah. This is open to Back Cove residents only. Study will take place on Monday evenings 7:00 to 8:00 PM starting November 27 th. Please call ahead (207-879-0159), as space is limited. III

Faith Formation Religious Education 207-358-7678 Classes Pre-K - 5 RCIA - Right of Christian Initiation of Adults Our Lady of Hope Sebastian Rasle, SJ Prayer Circle December Intentions Members and friends of our parish are invited to join our Prayer Circle - no meetings or dues! Just a commitment to pray for the monthly intentions. 1. For the spiritual health, vitality, and financial support of Our Lady of Hope Parish and St. Brigid School. 2. The Pope's intention for this month: That our elderly, sustained by families and Christian communities, may apply their wisdom and experience to spreading the faith and forming the new generations. 3. In the season of Advent, we are here to wait and wait and pray for the coming of light into the world. We long for the day when the things of darkness - selfishness and greed, suffering and oppression - shall be no more. Lord, God give us the experience, amidst all the activity of this month, to knowing what it is for which we hope, what are the longings of our hearts. Sacrament of Reconciliation As part of their two-year preparation for First Eucharist and Confirmation, our parish and St. Brigid School students in grade 2 will be celebrating the Sacrament of Reconciliation for the first time on Saturday Dec 2 at 9 AM at St. Joseph Church. Please pray for these young people that they experience the love of God at this moment of their lives. Pray also that their parents be good examples of faith to inspire them. Embrace Our Parish Future Fr Paul and members of the Parish have "made the case" to those at Masses the past several weeks of our need for the involvement of each and every parishioner in the life of our parish and school. Our aim is to respond to the call of the Holy Spirit to serve those people and families already connected to OLH and St. Brigid School and to reach out in service and invitation to those not yet involved. For that we need YOU: your time, energy, enthusiasm, ideas and your financial support as well. If you have not already done so, please turn in your Commitment Card and tell us how you'd like to embrace this future. We'll be in touch. And remember, in addition to the "active ministries" of the parish and St. Brigid, we also need support in the ministry of prayer as part of the OLH/Fr. Sebastian Rasle SJ Prayer Circle (no meetings, no dues - just a commitment to pray the three monthly intentions listed in the bulletin and on the website). VIII School News St. Brigid School 297-797-7073 www.sbrigid.com 675 Stevens Avenue Portland, Maine 04103-2640 William Burke - Principal Mary-Ann Russo - Director of Institutional Advancement Adorations Tuesday Evenings 7:00 to 8:00 PM St. Joseph Church Fridays 9:30 AM to 5:00 PM St. Pius X Church Rosary Devotion Monday through Thursday following 9:00 AM Mass St. Pius X Church Dear Parishioners, As a young boy, I looked forward to the last Sunday in November since my dad would always take me and my brother to the Christ the King Breakfast at the Holiday Inn by the Bay. The day was quite different since on this feast we went to the 8 o clock Mass instead of the 11; we dressed up in shirts and ties; we ate breakfast at 10am; and we would see the bishop, the Knights of Columbus, and pray the rosary with upwards of 500 people. As an adult I attended off and on over the years and my sons even joined me a few times. I learned several lessons from the yearly breakfast: Traditions develop at a young age; a loving community has the power to transform people and their outlook; God is present in all that we do; the rosary does not take as long to pray as I once thought; and the familiar faces from childhood pass from this life and their presence is missed. Being a part of St. Brigid School allows me to witness habits of learning developing in students; the power of a faith based educational community; and the transformation of very young children into teenagers who then move on to high school. As we near the end of the liturgical year, let s remember the lessons from our past and the hope that the coming of Christ brings to each of us and our community of faith. Parish Finance Council - St. Brigid Finance Council Recently our Parish and St. Brigid School Finance Councils held a joint meeting - the first in a long time if not the first ever. It was a chance to look at the hopes and desire we have for our parish and school and also the challenges facing both the parish as a whole and our school. There was much hope and enthusiasm expressed, careful attention paid to the use of our resources, and ideas about how we can "share the good news" of the good things happening in both the parish and St. Brigid School. Thanks and appreciation to the members of these Councils. For St. Brigid: Tim Bolduc, Tammy Walsh, John Laplante, Jerry Conley, Theresa Cornell, Jon Melanson and School Administrative Team members: Bill Burke, Mary Ann Russo, Fr Paul and Melodye DeBeradinis. For the overall parish Finance Council: Jon Melanson (he's on both!), Bill Green, Charles Noyes, Barbara Willey, Barbara Galardo and Parish Staff Members Mary Cafazzo and Fr. Paul.
