PARISH NEWS BLESSING OF PETS We are fortunate during this beautiful autumn season to celebrate the Feast of St. Francis of Assisi on Oct. 4th. St. Francis had a great love for the Lord and a deep reverence for all that God created - life in people, nature and animals. As a small way of remembering his life and legacy, we offer a BLESSING OF PETS ON SAT, OCT. 4 at 4 PM in the front parking lot of SJN. Please bring your pet (in a cage or on a leash) for this short blessing. St. Francis called the earth and all creatures to praise and thank God the creator for the gift of life. Pray that all the world come to Peace and Respect for Life. WOMEN'S GUILD All women of the parish are welcome to join us on Thursday, Oct. 2 @ 7:00 p.m. in the Youth Room. Our guest speaker will be Erin Gauntner, executive chef and owner of Erin's Fine Foods on Perry Hwy. Erin will be dazzling us with her talents as she demonstrates something special for us. Refreshments will be served and guests are most welcome. EUCHARISTIC MINISTERS, LECTORS & ALTAR SERVERS New serving schedules will be prepared shortly. If you have any changes to your availability, please call the Parish Office at ext. 10. This schedule will run from Nov. 1 through the end of Feb. 2015. ANOINTING OF THE SICK Anyone in need of the power of the sacrament of the Anointing of the Sick is invited to come to the 9 AM Mass on Sat. Oct. 4. This sacrament offers strength to us in body, mind or spirit. If you are in need of this sacrament immediately, please call ext. 10 to make arrangements. HOLY MOSES & MORE Get on the bus! Reserve your seat now for a great time. Invite a friend to come too on a Lenzner motor coach to Lancaster on Oct 17 & 18 with you or come by yourself. Trip includes transportation, tickets to a spectacular production of Moses, overnight accommodations, 1 dinner & 1 breakfast and a few side trips. Total cost depends on your room choice: single - $320, Double - $260, triple - $240 or quad - $230. Trip is open to ALL - in parish or not. Registration forms are on the website. Don t miss this chance to see a great show at the theater and God s show of beautiful fall colors as we travel. Could also be an excused absence from school since it is a religious program. Call Barb Stokes for details. Children must come with parent or guardian or a group of 3 with one adult chaperone. Help us fill the bus! PLEASANT VALLEY MENS SHELTER The next Men s Shelter dinner is Friday, October 3rd. If you would be willing to provide a side dish, casserole, dessert, salad, fruit or beverage, pleases contact Phyllis Huber (412-367-1437) or Cathy Gillis (412-548-3646). If you would prefer to donate an item (coffee, tea, creamers, granola bars, breakfast items which are always welcomed), be sure to let us know so that we do not miss picking up those items in Bovard kitchen. MARRIAGE PREP Weddings take a lot of planning but they only last a day. Help your marriage last a lifetime by setting time aside now for a marriage prep class. October 25, Saturday, is the next all day session we have scheduled at SJN. You do not have to belong to SJN to come to this marriage prep session. Please put it on your schedule and register for the class. Call the Religious Education office to register 412-366-5885 X12. Forms and info can be found online. Thanks for including the church in your "big event". KNIGHTS OF COLUMBUS HELPS WITH VOTER REGISTRATION AFTER ALL MASSES THIS WEEK-END BASKET HELP FOR LIGHT OF LIFE Many of our teens have served at Light of Life Mission on the North Side. It has been a rewarding experience and we have been treated graciously. Now LOL is asking if we could put together a basket for their silent auction on October 21. Could we do it? We need donated items and volunteers. Call Barb Stokes if you are interested - teens or adults. Hope to hear from you soon. 31 CLUB October is the month of The Rosary. Will you - or your family - please pray with the 31 Club for priestly vocations? We still need pray-ers to take 1 day a month (for a year) to pray with our Diocesan 31 Club. Please phone 319-321- 3966 or email annemallampalli@comcast.net with your preferred day of each month. Thanks! Anne CONSIDERING CATHOLICISM COME TODAY So much to think about this time of year! Perhaps a faith journey with the Catholic Church is part of your 2014-15 plans. If so, we d love to travel with you to the Lord through sacrament prayers and liturgy. Check out the information pamphlet on the lobby shelf. Then come on Sunday, Sept. 28 at 10:30 am for an informal question & answer inquiry session. Invite a friend or family member who might be interested in the church & come with them. Call Barb Stokes if you need more information or if you missed this meeting but are interested. You are invited!

Registration is necessary. We leave SJN at 4pm and conclude by 8pm. We are grateful to all parents and friends who have helped us with this service project all summer. Thanks for your support! Last but not least, ALL paperwork should be in for CONFIRMATION. Name, sponsor and sponsor certificate must be on file for you to be considered for Confirmation this year on SATURDAY, NOVEMBER 15 at 11AM. Pray for the next 50 days to be open to receive the Holy Spirit in a profound way and make this a new Pentecost for our church. Let's do it! IF YOU MISSED. Last Sunday we had prayer, practice and popsicles for our families preparing for 1st Reconciliation and 1st Communion this school year. If you missed it - we are sorry BUT your packet of work needs to be turned in to the religious education office ASAP. SPIRITUAL DIVORCED, WIDOWED, OR SEPARATED? The loss of a spouse through separation, divorce or death is a most traumatic experience. Many people who have suffered this loss feel left out by their church, uneasy around married friends, unsure of themselves, and uncertain about their future. The Beginning Experience weekend is intended to help widowed, divorced, separated people who would like to pass through the grief and begin to move forward with their lives. Come to a safe place. Travel from heartache to hope. The next weekend will be held October 24-26, at the Gilmary Center in Moon Twp, PA. Payment arrangements and possible financial assistance are available. Make a confidential call to Mary at 412-523-2405 or Steve at 412-720-8694 or www.beginningexperience.org SCRIPTURE STUDY It s a beautiful new season to spend some time with the Word of God in our Scripture Study. Get energized in the Lord on Thursday morning from 9:45 till 11:15 or so. You ll know the difference in your life. We study the coming Sunday readings and reflect on them together. The door is open for all! No previous Bible study is required. Just come and see! GOOD SHEPHERD FAMILY MASS OCTOBER 1 LECTORS & SERVERS NEEDED Now that our Good Shepherd year is underway, we will celebrate our first Family Masses on Wednesday, October 1 at 4:30 and 6:30 pm. We invite all Good Shepherd children and their families as well as all members of the parish to attend these special Masses. Children will serve as greeters, altar servers and lectors. Family Mass is an opportunity for the children to connect what they have been learning in the atrium to our great Eucharistic celebration. Even our youngest children who have just begun Level I have been learning how to quiet their voices and bodies in holy space and should recognize the objects of the altar. If you can be a lector or altar server on October 1 at 4:30 or 6:30, please call 412-366-5885 Ext. 12. We will train new lectors and servers before our January Family Masses. GOOD SHEPHERD PARENT MEETINGS Thanks to the many parents who attended our meetings earlier this month. Since there were parents who could not attend due to conflicting school events, we once again invite parents to join us on Monday, October 27 at 1:00 or 7:00 pm. After a brief overview of Catechesis of the Good Shepherd you will have the opportunity to visit your child s atrium. We hope to see you there! YOUTH MINISTRY What Happens at Encounter?
