OUR LADY OF MOUNT CARMEL PARISH AT OUR LADY OF LORETO CHURCH DECEMBER 3, 2017 Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Parish at Our Lady of Loreto Church PRAYER FOR PARISH SPIRITUAL RENEWAL Lord God, You love us with an everlasting love, and You choose us to share Your love with others. We ask that You rekindle in our hearts a new spirit of faith, of prayer and of reconciliation. Inspire us to search out and find ways of bringing one another closer to You. We pray for all who form our parish community, that we remain faithful to Your teaching, that we remain steadfast in our prayer, both personal and communal, that together with You and the Holy Spirit, our parish may be renewed and transformed. All this we ask in the name of Jesus and through the power of the Holy Spirit. Amen. Please cut out and pray daily. Feast of the Immaculate Conception Friday, December 8, is the Feast of the Immaculate Conception of the Blessed Virgin Mary and a holy day of obligation. Mass for the holy day will be held at 6 pm on Thursday, December 7, the vigil of the holy day, and at 7 am and 12:15 pm on Friday, December 8. The feast is celebrated nine months before the Nativity of Mary, which is celebrated on September 8. It is the patronal feast day of the United States. In the Constitution Ineffabilis Deus of December 8, 1854, Pope Pius IX pronounced and defined that the Blessed Virgin Mary in the first instance of her conception, by a singular privilege and grace granted by God, in view of the merits of Jesus Christ, the Savior of the human race, was preserved exempt from all stain of original sin. AND THE WINNER IS.. Congratulations to Marie Cecchini who won this year s Thanksgiving in a Basket Raffle sponsored by the Mount Carmel Knights of Columbus. 1st Sunday of Advent Another Advent is here! Do you remember what you did during Advent last year to prepare for the coming of Jesus? Did you feel a sense of anticipation while being watchful and alert? You can be honest. In Mark's Gospel reading for this Sunday, Jesus speaks of a man who leaves on travels and before he departs he puts his stewards in charge, so that upon his return his home will be ready. You and I are those whom Jesus has put in charge. We each have our own work to do. If we are not preparing using our own unique gifts and talents, who will do our work? Perhaps we think we can do that later, or maybe next year. But if no one knows when he is coming, how do we gauge how much time we have to complete our work? Most of us get so caught up in holiday shopping, making travel plans, preparing for guests, and attending holiday parties that even if we meant well, the motivation we had on day one of the Advent season slowly slips away. This year, let us resolve to be good stewards and be about our Lord's work. He trusted us enough to leave us in charge. He must believe we are up to the task Celebrate Advent by Lighting a Candle Liturgical Publications, Inc. The traditional Advent wreath has been set up in Loreto s sanctuary. We invite you and your family to come forward at the beginning of each Mass during Advent to light the candles on the wreath. A sign-up book has been placed on the table in the vestibule of the church to reserve the Mass at which you and your family would like to come forward. This is a wonderful way for you and your family to participate in this centuries-old Advent tradition. Pray Pray Pray...

THE FIRST SUNDAY OF ADVENT DECEMBER 3, 2017 Christmas Giving Trees Our parish continues to support the poor at Christmas through our Giving Tree tradition. Due to your incredible generosity, all tags placed on our Giving Trees last weekend have been claimed. Additional tags to support our diocesan seminarians have been placed on the tree. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Please return your gifts, wrapped or in gift bags, with the tags firmly attached on the outside no later than Sunday, December 17. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ What a wonderful way to prepare ourselves for the celebration of Christmas! This Week in Our Parish Tues., Dec. 5-7 pm - Knights of Columbus Fri., Dec. 8 - Feast of the Immaculate Conception Sat., Dec. 9 - Christmas Posada immediately Following the 4 pm Mass Sun., Dec. 10 - Religious Education classes: 8:30-11 am: Pre-K - Grade 4 11 am - 12:15 pm - Grades 5-10 1:30 pm - Wright s Chicken Farm and La Salette Shrine On Saturday December 9, 2015 Our Lady of Mt. Carmel KofC will again be hosting their Annual Posada immediately after the 4pm mass. A Posada is a traditional familyoriented Christmas event popular in Latin America. Combining readings, songs, and a reenactment, the Posada (Spanish for inn) recounts the story of the first Christmas, when Mary & Joseph traveled to Bethlehem but found no room at the inn. The Posada tradition was developed by Franciscan missionaries centuries ago as a means of explaining Christmas. The event ends with a procession to the center where there will be light refreshments and a piñata for the children. All members of the parish are warmly invited to attend. A LETTER FROM BISHOP McMANUS December 1, 2017 My dear brothers and sisters in Christ, On December 9 and 10, our parishes will be conducting the appeal for the Retirement Fund for Religious, a national collection that benefits more than 32,000 elderly sisters, brothers, and religious order priests. Our senior religious are a treasure. Their dedication and hard work laid the foundation for Catholic schools, hospitals, and numerous social service organizations. Many continue in volunteer ministry today. Their ongoing prayer and witness enrich our faith in countless ways. I am grateful for the service of religious, past and present. I hope you, too, recall a sister or brother who made a positive difference in your life. Most elderly religious worked for years for small stipends, leaving a substantial gap in retirement savings. Unlike retired diocesan priests who are cared for by their diocese, religious sisters, brothers and priests are part of religious communities whose assets are separate from dioceses. With the ever-rising cost of health care and the increase in the number of those needing care, many religious communities now struggle to provide for their senior members. The Retirement Fund for Religious offers vital financial assistance to help meet day-to-day needs for prescription medications, nursing care, and more. Nationally, despite unparalleled generosity to the collection, the average annual cost of care for a senior religious continues to rise each year, including skilled care, which can range from $50,000 to more than $75,000 per year. Rising costs are compounded by the fact that more than 1 out of 3 members of religious communities is over the age of 80! The need is still very great. I recognize that this is but one of numerous worthy causes seeking your support and I ask you to consider prayerfully what you can do to help. In thanksgiving for all that elder religious have done for us, whether individually or as a community of faith, please give to those who have given a lifetime by donating to the Retirement Fund for Religious and by praying for God s continued blessing on our elderly sisters, brothers, and religious order priests. With prayerful best wishes, I remain Sincerely yours in Christ, Most Reverend Robert J. McManus Bishop of Worcester

Knights of Columbus The Family Fully Alive Program Advent is a season of new beginnings culminating in the remembrance of the Savior s birth at Christmas. What an excellent time to begin a new family prayer practice. It will change your life and will help your family focus on the important things in the world. The theme for the month of December is: JOY Consider these questions: 1. What are some of the joys we have experienced in our family? Are there ways to build upon these joys to create a more joyful home? 2. In what ways could we add more joy to our family? Could we be more cheerful in giving and complain less? Could we focus less on our own needs and more on the happiness of a family member? Could we rejoice in our family s love by affirming each other more with compliments? Could we smile more at our family members? 3. Do we base our lives on the joyful awareness that we are beloved sons and daughters of God, or do we let something rob us of the joy of the Gospel? What is it that robs us? Is it anxiety, fear or impatience? How might prayer help with these things? (First of a 12 part series.) MEN'S FELLOWSHIP Are you satisfied with your relationship with Jesus? Do you sometimes feel unfulfilled; as if you are missing something? A group of men at Our Lady of Loreto meet bi-weekly to discuss their relationship with Jesus, and how to live out that call in the midst of their lives. All you need to bring is an open heart. We welcome new faces. If you would like more information contact Rick Annunziata at 508-826-7732 or email at Rsa06@charter.net DIOCESAN ADVENT CONCERT This year marks the 12th year of our having a diocesan Advent Concert. This year it will be held on the 1st Sunday of Advent (December 3 rd ) at 2:00 PM at Sacred Heart church on 596 Cambridge Street in Worcester. The event will last for roughly two hours, with music followed by fellowship afterwards in the Hall. Last year we had 7 groups perform in 5 different languages.
