Romans 10:8 PASSING THE TEST Test is a four-letter word. Spelling tests, driving tests, SATs, all bring a knot to the stomach. Tests are something we would rather forgo, but also something we must undergo. Lent, too, is a four-letter word and is also a kind of test, for the only way to Easter is to pass through Lent. Today s reading from Deuteronomy commends Israel for its faith in the God who saves. No matter the tribulation, Israel s faith enables it to persevere. This faith/test theme also appears in the reading from Romans. Paul boldly asserts that faith in Christ will see the believer through any trial. The Gospel passage makes it clear that even Jesus was tested. It describes a test, a struggle between good and evil, that dramatically demonstrates Jesus faith in the power of God s life in him. This power enables him to overcome temptation. This power is with all of us who celebrate the test of Lent, a power enabling us to pass with flying colors. Copyright J. S. Paluch Co.

Sunday: Monday: Thursday: Friday: Saturday: SAINTS & SPECIAL OBSERVANCES First Sunday of Lent; Rite of Election Presidents Day St. Peter Damian The Chair of St. Peter the Apostle; Abstinence; Washington s Birthday St. Polycarp; Purim (Jewish observance) begins at sunset SAINT PETER DAMIAN (1007-1072), BISHOP & DOCTOR St. Peter Damian was a man of many gifts. He was an excellent teacher who was sensitive to the needs of the poor and generous in sharing what he had. He was an able administrator who was often able to settle disputes among civil and religious authorities, and a prolific writer of sermons, biographies, and letters. He embraced an ascetic personal spirituality and worked hard to rid the Church of simony, clerical laxity, and schism. And he was willing to leave the solitary hermit life he preferred to meet the more pressing needs of the church as Bishop, instead. Today's opening prayer includes a wonderful definition of stewardship as a way of life; "All powerful God, help us to follow the teachings of Peter Damian. By making Christ and the service of the Church the first love of our lives, may we come to the joys of eternal light, where he lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever." When we have truly made Christ and the service of the Church the first love of our lives, we too will be on our way to becoming steward saints. TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION Often, when a family keeps vigil around a person who is preparing for death, they may notice three interwoven activities. First, the dying person may become more prayerful and reflective than ever before, reviewing life s journey in gratitude to God, or seeking forgiveness and making amends for wrongs. Second, as death approaches, the need to eat and drink is lessened until even an ice cube brushed against the lips is satisfying. Third, persons who are dying often make plans to give their possessions away, making bequests, handing treasures down, providing for favorite charities. Prayer, fasting, and almsgiving: with these three pillars of Lent, we rehearse our death every year in this season, and anticipate the final work we will do in this life. And every year, at the end of our journey, is the joy of Easter and the experience of the victory of Christ over death s darkness and power. Annually, we remind ourselves that the Christian experiences the same power and presence at the end of life s journey: Christ to the rescue and the lasting joy of heaven. STEWARDSHIP REFLECTION James Field, Copyright J. S. Paluch Co. As we begin the season of Lent, we are reminded in the readings today of practices that can help us grow in a lifelong journey of holiness. The first reading relates how Moses instructed the Israelites in their duty to offer the first fruits of the land to the Lord. St. Paul explains to the Romans how important it is to pray from mind and heart. In the gospel we hear how Jesus fasted for forty days after his baptism to prepare for his ministry. Almsgiving, prayer and fasting are important sources of growth as we acknowledge that all we have is a gift from God. May our efforts this Lent help us on our faith journey to the kingdom. Habitat for Humanity Update Stewardship: Responding to God s Gifts Our Commitment Sunday was held on the weekend of November 10-11. Many families came forward with their pledge cards. You can still turn in your Stewardship Pledge card at the office or place it in the collection basket at Mass this weekend. 2013 Pledge Goal $2,000,000 Pledges To Date $1,499,826 Stewardship Pledge Card Thermometer Percentage of Goal Reached = 74.9% As of 01/30/13 Save the Date: Save a Life Be a part of the next Blood Drive on Sunday, March 10th from 8:30am-1:45pm in Christopher Hall. This is written after two days of construction on our 18 th Parish sponsored HFH house. Many of the volunteers had worked on every previous house that we built as was evident by the progress of construction, a lot of enjoyment, and fun. By the time this item appears in our weekend bulletin, progress will be nearing the half way mark. There are two areas needing attention. The first, is that we need more volunteers for Fridays. The other is financial. As of February 4, 57% or $30,000 has been raised. We need to raise a total of $52,000. If you have not made a contribution, prayerfully consider doing so, as soon as you can. The HFH organization knows that we will meet our goal even though we may be half way through construction before that happens. It is like having a very good credit rating!! If you would like to help, check the front page of the St. Mark website for the correct committee member or call Sam Szalwinski at 496-6310.

COMMUNITY AND SERVICE SAVE THE DATE!! February 23-27, 2013 OUR PARISH MISSION With our special guest Fr. Philip UNWRAPPING THE GIFT OF FAITH DAILY DWELLING IN POSSIBILITY Between October 2012 and November 2013 the Catholic Church celebrates The Year of Faith, coinciding with the 50th anniversary of the opening of the Second Vatican Council and the 20th anniversary of the promulgation of the Catechism of the Catholic Church. During the upcoming parish retreat we will explore simple and concrete tools and practices that can help us, pilgrims on the way, to unwrap the precious gift of faith. Our hope is that we become creative artists of the Good News in a seemingly bad news world.
