SECOND SUNDAY OF ADVENT ~ DECEMBER 7, 2014 FROM THE PASTOR S DESK BE PATIENT! Admit it. You are already making yourselves crazy, what with decorations and gifts and special meals and travel plans, not to mention sending out the cards and annual letters. Some of you may even be thinking, "I'll be glad when all of this is over!" though we certainly hope not! Think back to those days over 2,000 years ago; under the quiet cover of night's darkness, a young couple set out on a journey. There was nothing of what we've added to this season, only quiet anticipation and prayer as they slowly made their way to an as yet unknown destination. Today's reading introduces us to John the Baptist. He is described as a voice of one, crying out in the desert, announcing to everyone who will hear him that the Messiah is coming. Imagine the excitement of those who listened to John; after centuries of waiting, the Christ was coming to baptize with the promised Holy Spirit. John the Baptist was the last of the prophets to proclaim the coming of Jesus Christ. This holiest of men had waited all of his life for the moment when he could announce the coming of the Savior. He was patient; he was faithful. During this Advent season, as we remember the promise of a Savior who would save us from our sins, let us pray for patience and faith through the Holy Spirit. Now is the time for peace in our lives and in our hearts. The writer Jack Kerouac and some of his Columbia University football teammates, in an era when Columbia actually won some games, once went on a spree in Greenwich Village, during which they shoved a musician into an alley and broke his violin over his head. Kerouac never forgot the incident. He would get drunk and say, We should never have hit that man with his violin. All of us have our own sins to regret once we are old enough to commit them. Fortunately, there is also a divinely created remedy for them, which is likely to come to mind as Christmas approaches: the Sacrament of Penance, or Reconciliation, or Confession, as it is variously called. This year s communal Penance service, with individual confessions, will take place at St. Peter s in River Edge on Monday, December 15, at 7:00 pm. The priests of both parishes will be there to offer the sacrament s forgiveness and healing. We are doing so jointly as one of our major cooperative efforts in the Archdiocese s New Energies initiative, which calls on parishes to share their resources. Lent s Penance service will take place at Saint Joseph. We will continue to hear Confessions at our usual time of 4:00 to 5:00 pm on Saturdays. On December 20, all three of our priests will be available at that time. There will be additional opportunities for Confession after the daily morning Masses of December 22-24. A Penance Rite from 11th-century Italy has this beautiful prayer, an encouraging reminder of God s vast forgiveness: MARY OF NAZARETH FILM TODAY, DECEMBER 7 FREE! Come see this beautiful feature-length film on the life of Our Blessed Mother at NO COST on Sunday, December 7, the eve of the Feast of the Immaculate Conception, at 6:30 pm in Mary s Chapel in the lower church. We beseech your majesty, O Lord, Father, almighty eternal God, who ever seek not the death but the life of sinners: Regard the weeping of your servant prostrate before you, and turn his lamentation into the joy of your mercy; rend the sackcloth of his sins and clothe him in salutary gladness, that after the long famine of his roaming afar he may be satiated from your holy altars; having entered the chamber of the King, in His temple may he bless and exalt the name of your glory forever. IMMACULATE CONCEPTION OF THE BLESSED VIRGIN MARY DECEMBER 8 A HOLY DAY OF OBLIGATION Monday, December 8 is the Solemnity of the Immaculate Conception of the Blessed Virgin Mary, patronal feast day of the United States. Congratulations to Patricia Fakharzadeh, who will be honored by the Newark Archdiocesan Council of Catholic Women next Saturday as this year s Woman of Faith, Woman of Action. It s a wonderful honor for Pat and for Saint Joseph Parish. Masses for the holy day will be: Monday, December 8,, 10:30 am and 7:30 pm. (There will be no anticipated Mass the evening before.) Msgr. David Hubba 3

SAINT JOSEPH CHURCH ORADELL/NEW MILFORD, NJ RETIREMENT FUND FOR RELIGIOUS THIS WEEKEND DECEMBER 6-7 MARY S MESSAGE During Advent we honor Mary s special role in salvation history on December 8 as we remember her Immaculate Conception and then again on December 12 as we celebrate the feast of Our Lady of Guadalupe. Saint Juan Diego was a simple peasant from a small Mexican village whose faith and fortitude were central to the story of Our Lady of Guadalupe. Mary met and spoke with Juan Diego and later imprinted her miraculous image on his cloak (the tilma). The beautiful and scientifically inexplicable imprint of Mary on the tilma depicts a woman dressed in the traditional garb of Juan Diego's people. It is as if Mary were saying, "I am one of you." She was a simple girl with a profound faith. Yet look how that faith changed the course of human history! As Mary says in the Gospel for the feast of Our Lady of Guadalupe, "I am the handmaid of the Lord." She claims no lofty status for herself but simply makes herself available for God's plan: "May it be done to me according to your word." Mary encourages us to say the same. We too can say yes to God's will in our own lives. Never counting the cost, some 35,000 senior sisters, brothers, and religious order priests have offered their lives in service to others. Many worked for years for small stipends, leaving their religious communities without adequate savings for retirement and eldercare. Your gift to the Retirement Fund for Religious provides funding for prescription medications, nursing care, and more. Please be generous. If you do not use parish envelopes, or our electronic giving option, ParishPay, please put your donation made out to Saint Joseph Church in an envelope marked Retirement Fund for Religious. GIVE FROM THE HEART You can put something under a needy family s Christmas tree. The gifts from our parish s Giving Trees, which are located in the main entrance of the Church and at the Harrison Street entrance, will go to Several Sources Shelter, Covenant House, St. Joseph Parish in Jersey City, and Catholic Charities. Please take a tag from the Giving Tree, purchase the requested gift and then place the wrapped gift, with tag attached, under the tree the next time you come to Mass. The tag you take from the tree is very important. It tells our office staff and the agencies we are helping for whom the gift is meant. It is extremely important that the tag you took from the Giving Tree be attached securely to the wrapped gift so that it will reach the correct person on Christmas. If you re unable to fulfill the gift request you took, don t worry, just return the tag to the Rectory. All Giving Tree Gifts need to be turned in no later than Sunday, December 14. HAVE YOUR CHRISTMAS CRÈCHE BLESSED You can take part in a cherished Catholic tradition this Christmas season when you have the nativity scene in your own home blessed. Call Fr. Roy at 201-261-0148 and arrange a mutually convenient time in the evening for him to come and bless your creche.
