February Worship Focus SPECIAL MISSION FOCUS ON FEB. 5th IN WORSHIP February 5th we will have (3) of our special mission priorities featured in worship! Our MDO program, our youth and the Jacksboro Food Pantry will all be with us sharing information, scripture and what needs they foresee for 2017. As we expand our offerings to include ALL people with various needs: education, fellowship, hunger and more, this is a special opportunity for you to consider what missions you will support, and how: with time, talents or treasure. Please make a special effort to be in worship and what a great day to bring a friend to worship! THE OSCARS IN WORSHIP. or what Suzanne thought should win Every year the Oscars stir up some buzz on what film didn t make it to the Best Picture category. Films have become a medium for message, not unlike our sermons on Sunday mornings. During worship on Feb. 12, 19 and 26, Suzanne will explore the spiritual concepts we can find in three movies that she wished had won the Oscar the year they premiered. What new insights will we learn from The Wizard of Oz, Good Will Hunting and Finding Neverland? Don t miss a moment of worship in February!
Nurture & Evangelism submitted by Roxanna Maddox The Men of the Parish are busy with preparations for the upcoming Valentine Dinner to be held at the MCC Fellowship Hall on Saturday, Feb. 11 at 6:00 PM. For those of you who have previously attended this special evening, you already know what a delightful time is had by all. And if you haven t been to our Valentine Dinner, then you really don t know what you are missing. The men work very hard to assure everyone that the candlelit evening is one that they won t soon forget. The red bow tied waiters will smother you will impeccable food and service and the flower laden tables will be a reminder that Valentine s Day is near. Each year would not be complete without some very magical entertainment and this year promises to be no different. I would encourage ALL of you to attend. This is not a Sweetheart dinner, but rather a Valentine dinner. It promises to be a beautifully, engaging evening. Child Care is provided, so there really is no excuse to stay home. If you have not already received your invitation in the mail, then reading this is your personal invitation. Please call Bob Maddox at (940) 507-0068 or email him at bob@maddoxrealty.com and let him know that you will be there. See you Feb. 11th! Youth Ministry submitted by Kristine Tisinger The youth have had a busy start to 2017. After buying gifts for 6 Christmas angels in December, and decorating tons of cookies at our Christmas party, the youth began meeting for 2017 on January 11th. We ve started to plan for our local youth mission trip to take place in July 2017, and brainstormed fundraising ideas which will start in February. We also started a new series on the Influence of Identity on Wednesday nights, and took 19 students paintballing on January 22. We ve continued our Ancestor series in Sunday school at FUMC and are learning about people who helped shape Christianity in the New Testament. If you would like to join us on Wednesdays or Sundays, we would love to have you. The Middle School group meets from 6-7:15pm on Wednesdays, with High Schoolers meeting from 6:45-8pm at the Parish Fellowship Hall. On Sundays we meet on the 2nd floor of FUMC from 9:45-10:30am. We hope to see you there!
Mission & Stewardship submitted by Brian Davenport Join in the cause to minimize hunger during the NFL Super Bowl on February 5th. Volunteers nationwide are utilizing the big game to highlight groups in their own community needing food assistance. Locally, the Jacksboro Parish and Ministerial Alliance have designated the Concerned Citizens of Jacksboro as the beneficiary of our community funds. Remember to bring your monetary donations to Parish on February 5th to be dropped in the soup cans during the Children s Moment of Sunday s worship. Funds collected will be given to Concerned Citizens to continue to provide hot meals to local senior citizens. The Concerned Citizens has been an extension of the Parish s love for years. Please don t miss this opportunity to help a wonderful group. SOUL SUPPORT Do you have lunchtime open? Join a small group of ladies who join together the 3rd Wednesday of every month at noon! Lunch is always provided, along with some fun spiritual content that allows us to develop deeper relationships with one another. Our next gathering will be February 15th at noon, in the ANNEX, across the street from the church building! Won t you join us? GRACEISTS Women s Ministries Our evening small group for women is centered on real, raw and renewing relationships. This year, we will tackle the topic A WOMAN & HER RELATIONSHIPS, using material from Rosemary Flaaten. Our next gathering is February 22nd at 7pm! Make plans to join us for snacks, beverages and conversation as we explore this topic. Be on the lookout for the location!
MDO Xtreme January flew by so fast at MDO! We welcomed (6) new children to our program this month and have enjoyed getting to know them and their families. During January, our preschool explored the excitement of beginning a new year through arts & crafts, science experiments, books, songs, and play. We hope you are able to attend the Parish worship service on February 5th to hear more about MDO!
Senior Minister s Article We turn to the psalms in all times of need. When we are praising. When we are worshipping. When things look bleak. This book of songs is really a treasure trove of the way God continues to speak into our ordinary everyday lives. Oftentimes, I m asked for scriptures that speak life into certain situations. Nearly every single time, I have a psalm to share. How long has it been since you have spent time with this valued book in our Bible? How long has it been since you read them, one by one, listening to God s actions and how our ancestors remained faithful? There are amazing metaphors for our lives in their words. But what I also find comforting is to listen to renditions of the psalms, musically. Since we think that psalms were first a worship book, songs, even, I find singing and listening to the psalms a helpful meditation practice. To that end, I ve gathered a playlist of sorts for you to consider. Some are traditional, long-loved favorites. Some are more contemporary and every thing in between. Maybe each of us can add these scripture songs into our devotion practice. And I would love for you to put on our Facebook Page some other choices, too! Be well, Listen deeply.
