If that sounds familiar, you ll know that the entertainment genius, Gertrude Berg, has come to call. Before Oprah, before Lucy, this remarkable actress rose from being on radio to her box-office smash hit sitcom, a role which brought Gertrude Berg the first Best Actress Emmy in history. Her work paved the way for a wide variety of causes women in entertainment, Jewish American identity and actor s rights - and you ll meet her in person via DVD at the next meeting of the Rossmoor Sisterhood on Monday, Jan.16, at 1:30 p.m. in the Gallery. On our DVD, in a compelling suspenseful drama, almost the entire Jewish population of Denmark was saved in one night, in exactly the same way, by their fellow Danish citizens and ferried across the sea to neutral Sweden. From there, they could get to England to join the fight against Nazi Germany. The program also includes episodes from the sitcom, The Goldbergs, interviews with Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg, actor Ed Asner, and producer Norman Lear (All in the Family), as well as career appearances of Ann Bancroft and Steve McQueen. All of Rossmoor is invited. The story of the film begins with a Jewish Danish family who shelter a Resistance fighter. From the Resistance, they learn the day on which the Germans plan to round up all the Jews in one fell swoop, and how that information is spread secretly throughout Denmark without the knowledge of the Germans. It really is an exciting film. Come and see it at the next meeting of the Rossmoor Sisterhood on Monday, Feb. 20, at 1:30 p.m. in the Gallery. For both meetings, we ll also have our delicious desserts, and don t forget to bring non-perishable food for the Food Pantry.
