A WORD FROM OUR PASTOR At some point late in the year, I look ahead to the coming year and begin scheduling events in my calendar. One of the first things I schedule is the Sacred Paschal Triduum -- Holy Thursday, Good Friday, Holy Saturday and Easter Sunday. I do not do this for Christmas because I do not have to. Unlike Christmas, Easter bounces around the calendar. This is because the date of Easter is based on the moon as opposed to the date of Christmas which is based on the sun. We ordinarily calculate our dates in terms of the sun. Sun goes up. Sun goes down. It is a pretty clear way to do it, and so the date of Christmas is always the same based on the sun. But the moon has a different cycle than the sun, and dates based on the moon change. In 325 A.D. the Church calculated the dates for Easter using the time of the first full moon after the 21st of March. Prior to 325 A.D. there was no single day for Easter. Some Christians celebrated Easter on or just after the first day of the Jewish Passover regardless of the day of the week while others celebrated it on the Sunday after the first day of Passover. I rather like this fluidity to the date of Easter because it teaches us something about the resurrection. Easter is not an anniversary but a mystery. Easter is our celebration of the mystery that Christ is risen, always risen, regardless of what day it is. Resurrection is not predictable, explainable or understandable. It comes on all days and in all ways. Resurrection comes when we least expect it and in ways we cannot control, but just like the ever-changing face of the moon, we can count on it. This is the bottom line of Christianity: we are the people who count on resurrection. We cannot control or explain or understand or predict it, but we count on it. We count on God to bring new life out of death, new hope out of loss, new meaning out of suffering. It is my prayer and wish that Easter will be more than just a day on your calendar but that it will permeate your life and fill every day of your year. Amidst all the changes and struggles and pains of life, may you always count on the power of Christ risen from the dead to transform your life and to bring you the uncontrollable, unexplainable, unpredictable, unmistakable joy of the resurrection every day of the year. For me, the best, the most profound, the most moving experiences I have ever had of resurrection have come through the liturgy of the Church. The liturgy does not simply remember Christ's passion, death and resurrection as a mere historical event, nor does it re-enact it in some sort of passion play. Rather, the liturgy lives Christ's passion, death and resurrection in the here and now. In the liturgy and sacraments of the Sacred Paschal Triduum, Christ lives, suffers, dies and rises in our midst, in our experience, in our here and now. Our faith is in the living, risen Christ, and he lives and rises in us, with us, and for us in the liturgy and sacraments every day and most exquisitely in the Sacred Paschal Triduum. Please do not miss the best, most profound, most moving way to know the passion, death and resurrection of Christ as we celebrate the Sacred Paschal Triduum this week. Fr. You do not have to attend every meeting to participate. Come as you are able. If you did not attend the presentation, we still want you there. We have as the starting point of our discussion the book Reason to Believe, the personal story of Ron Tesoriero s journey for answers. Ron is an Australian lawyer who is joined in his quest by Mike Willesee, a well-respected journalist. The two of them and their story were the inspiration for the Science Tests Faith program. If you have the book now is the time to read it. If you want a book, let me know. It costs $22. I will get some for you. We will start off next week with the material that is in chapters 6-9. You do not have to read the book to participate. We will go where the Holy Spirit leads us. Come when you are able and help us strengthen our faith here at Divine Infant. The Parish Transformation Team is looking for a few good men and women, moms and dads, teens and young adults to help with the second phase of the Parish Census. We are now in the process of calling those parishioners who have not yet verified their registration information. This is a really important project for the future of Divine Infant. If you have just a couple of hours to spare every once in a while and like talking on the phone with your friends and family, this job is for you! We have a script written out for you, so all you have to do is make some calls and talk to fellow parishioners to make sure all their information is correct. This practice dates back many years and the youth have truly enjoyed the experience. I would like to extend an invitation to Young adults and others who might be interested in joining us this year. We start our journey immediately following the Evening Mass here at Divine Infant on Holy Thursday. Then we hit the road of pilgrimage. We usually end up back at Divine Infant between 11:30 pm and Midnight. If there is enough interest we will be able to rent a bus to take us around (no charge to you). So if this is something that would be new to you, sparks an interest in you, or might even be challenging to you, email me at jim_negrete@att.net March 19 th. And you can bring a friend! On the journey I provide you the history/meaning of the 7 Church pilgrimage and information about the Churches that we visit. It has always been a prayerful and fun experience for those who have attended in the past.

THE EASTER VIGIL IN THE HOLY NIGHT May the light of Christ rising in glory dispel the darkness of our hearts and minds The three days of the Sacred Paschal Triduum, Holy Thursday of the Lord s Supper, Friday of the Passion of the Lord, and Holy Saturday are continuous celebrations of the Passion and Resurrection of our Lord. The Church solemnly celebrates Christ crucified, buried and risen. The Easter Vigil in the Holy Night is the pinnacle of the liturgical year and is a glorious celebration of the Resurrection of Christ, our Lord. The Easter Vigil has four parts: the Lucenarium, the Liturgy of the Word, the Baptismal Liturgy and the Liturgy of the Eucharist. Each part brings us through the Paschal Mystery to the light of eternal life, through the signs, symbols and prayers of the liturgy. The Mass begins with the Lucenarium, from the Latin, lucerna for lamp, bringing light in the darkness. The new fire is blessed, the Paschal Candle, symbol of Christ, the Alpha and the Omega, is prepared. The Candle is lit from the fire and is processed into the church as The Light of Christ who gives light to all the faithful. Then the Exsultet, Easter Proclamation, is chanted. We praise God our Father, proclaiming that this is the night when Christ broke the prison of death and rose victorious. The Liturgy of the Word recalls salvation history from the Jewish covenant, leading up to Christ, the New and Eternal Covenant. We begin with the Genesis accounts of Creation and of Abraham being put to the test. The Exodus reading follows, telling of the triumph of the Lord over the Egyptians, and then the prophet Isaiah invites all who are thirsty to come to the water! We jubilantly sing the Glory to God, and then St. Paul reminds us in Romans that we are buried with Christ in baptism so that, we too might live in newness of life. The Gospel proclaims Christ raised from the dead; the tomb is indeed empty! The next part of the liturgy will include the Baptism of those who are coming into the Catholic Church. If baptism is not celebrated, the liturgy proceeds with the Blessing of Water, the Renewal of Baptismal Promises and the Sprinkling of all the faithful with Baptismal Water. We pray through our new birth by water and the Holy Spirit, that God keep us by his grace in Christ Jesus, our Lord, for eternal life. The Liturgy of the Eucharist follows, with the preface that it is our duty and our salvation at all times to acclaim you, O Lord, but on this night, above all to laud you yet more gloriously. We are indeed, celebrating the most sacred night of the Resurrection of our Lord, Jesus Christ, in the flesh. We sing the Lord s prayer together with one heart and voice, exchange the Sign of Peace, ask the Lord to enter into our very being, and proceed to receive the Holy Body and Blood of Christ. The Mass concludes with the Solemn Blessing, as we pray, Now that the days of the Lord s Passion have drawn to a close, may you who celebrate the gladness of the Paschal Feast come with Christ s help, and exulting in spirit, to those feasts that are celebrated in eternal joy. LENT/TRANSFORMATION/MEDICINE OF MERCY This Lent Pope Francis is asking all of us to bring the medicine of mercy to all in need. He has described his vision of the Church as a field hospital in the middle of a terribly wounded world desperately in need of the medicine of mercy. These are profound and powerful words of wisdom. The word mercy means compassion and forgiveness shown toward someone who could potentially be treated harshly. It is about showing kindness and giving help to someone that may be in a bad situation. Medicine refers to the practice of diagnosis, treatment and prevention of disease. The word medicine is derived from the Latin ars medicina meaning the art of healing. In order to begin to transform our Divine Infant Community into a field hospital to practice the medicine of mercy, we need to transform ourselves. The Lenten Season is a time for purification. It is a time of change and growth. It is a time to look at our own wounds. It is a time to heal our body, mind and spirit. We all know the drill. We give up chocolate, smoking, soda, fried foods, etc. I would venture to guess that during the Season of Lent we spend less time at the doctor s office. Diabetics are eating better and taking less insulin. People with hypertension may have lower blood pressures during Lent because they are eating healthier (taking in less salt) and perhaps exercising. The list can go on. I wonder if we can give something up for 40 days, why is it that we cannot give something up for our lifetime? Pick one simple thing. When Lent comes to an end, instead of going back to drinking soda on a daily basis, allow yourself one soda per week. In doing this, you allow yourself to remember that we are on a constant journey with Christ. We are on a constant journey of transformation. We are on a constant journey of healing our body, mind and spirit. If we allow ourselves to remember we are on a constant journey, perhaps we can begin to understand our wounded world. Once we take on this understanding, we can begin the work of becoming a field hospital bringing about the medicine of mercy to those in need. Blessings, Jeannette Parish Nurse

Are you interested in joining them? Are you looking for ways to serve God through works of love, mercy and justice, while breaking boundaries and creating hope? All single Catholic women, ages 18-42, are invited to learn more about becoming a Sister of Providence during a Come and See weekend, scheduled for Friday, April 10, through Sunday, April 12. All interested women are invited to Owens Hall, located on the grounds of Saint Mary-of-the-Woods, beginning at 5 p.m., on Friday, April 10. The theme for the weekend is, Rooted in the Charism of Providence. According to Sisters of Providence Vocation Director Sister Editha Ben, the weekend helps women learn more about what life is like as a Sister of Providence. Women in attendance will have the opportunity to experience prayer with the sisters and more. The free weekend includes housing at Owens Hall and meals. By Archdiocesan regulation and parish policy, parents are required to attend a Baptismal Preparation session before the Baptism of their child. These sessions will usually be held on the first Sunday afternoon of the month. Call the secretary at the rectory (865-8071) to register for the session and schedule the Baptism. D.I.V.M. SERVICES: Communion to the sick, food shopping, necessary transportation, emergency meals, transportation to Mass. Resource information also available. If you need help from any of these services, please let us know as much in advance as possible so the chairpersons can make arrangements and the volunteers arrange their schedules. If you are able to volunteer to help provide these services to our parishioners, we can always use more help. Please call the rectory at 865-8071. WEDDINGS: Couples should contact the rectory and speak to a priest shortly after the engagement, but no less than four months before the desired wedding day. No date should be set (especially in reserving a hall) for your wedding until you have spoken to a priest. In this way, you will not be disappointed if the church has been previously reserved for another ceremony.
