Advent and a New Liturgical Year With the beginning of Advent next week, you will note some changes in the Church environment and in our liturgical celebrations: purple is used for vestments; decorations are minimal; the lighting is darker due to the length and darkness of our days; the Gloria is not sung or recited. All of these changes reflect the quiet expectation that we feel as we wait with joy to celebrate Christ s first coming, in history, and as we redirect our lives to await his second coming at the end of time. We light candles on our Advent Wreath to mark the passage of the weeks and of our waiting, as the light builds toward Christmas. Advent wreaths may be used at home to mark this season as well. Advent candles sets are available for parishioners to purchase for home use, and prayer sheets are available to all as you leave Church this week. We encourage you to incorporate these special prayers into your home life during the weeks of Advent. Advent also marks the beginning of a new liturgical year. During the upcoming year, Year A in the cycle of readings, we will hear primarily from the Gospel of Matthew. Matthew is the longest of the four Gospels and emphasizes the role of Jesus Christ as the promised Messiah. The Book of the Gospels, which we carry in procession at each Sunday Mass, depicts vibrant images of the traditional symbols of each of the evangelists. Matthew s symbol is the angel, perhaps associating him with Jesus birth narrative in his Gospel. You will notice that while the Book of the Gospels is carried in to Church during the opening procession, it is not carried out at the end of Mass. This is because, once proclaimed during Mass, the Word of God rests in our hearts, and is carried out of Church by each of us as we take God s Word into the world to live it each week. The Gospel of Matthew ends with the Great Commission, a message which stresses our call to live our faith: Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you. And behold, I am with you always until the end of the age. This is the commission of all Christians and serves as the capstone to the Mission Statement of our parish. As we observe this season of Advent, may we each strive to live out this Gospel message more fully in our daily lives.
