Franciszek (Francis) Michał (Michael) (Michel/Mitchel, Mitchell etc.) Wojciechowski Born abt 1808-1811 in Russian-occupied Poland Brother of Antone Francis (Antoni Franciszek) Wojciechowski, born about 1834 Franciszek Michał Wojciechowski fought in the 1830 Uprising Captain of the Sandomierz Lancers The original [Sienkiewicz literary character] of Longin [Podbipięta], we are told by Modjeska, was Captain Wojciechowski, a close friend of Zagłoba's original, Captain [Rudolf Korwin] Piotrowski, and like the latter a veteran of the Uprising of 1830. Arthur Prudden Coleman, Marion Moore Coleman - 1964 Modjeska: To finish with the oldest generation, there was yet another veteran of 1830, old Captain Wojciechowski, called usually Captain Francis, an old companion of Piotrowski. It was at his place that Sienkiewicz took up his abode when he left Anaheim. I did not know him so well, but he was spoken of very highly, and they say that Sienkiewicz reproduced some of the features of his personality in another great character in his "Fire and Sword, the wonderful and heroic "[Longinus] Podbipięta," for like him he was more than commonly tall, very thin, and reserved by disposition. 1833-34, New York, Evening Post -- Arrival of Polish passengers Geneva, NY Gazette Advertizer, 9 April 1834 Place: Annotation: Source Bibliography: Page: 177 New York, New York Date and port of arrival. Fay, the genial proprietor of the Eldred House, was born in County Galway, Ireland, in 1830. Son of Michael Fay, a farmer and stone-mason. The family consisted of eleven children In the spring of 1852 Patrick left New York for California. He sailed to the Isthmus on the steamer Independence. His brother, who had come to the coast in 1851, was mining at Cook s Bar, on the Cosumnes River, and our subject joined him there. He was quite successful in mining; working with a common rocker, he made $16 a day. In 1858 he purchased a ranch in this county, where he engaged in farming until 1873, when he moved his family to Sacramento. He purchased the Eldred House of Sidney Eldred who built the house in 1861, of which he has been proprietor for five years. Always taking an active interest in politics and affiliating with the Democratic party, he was brought forward by them as their candidate for county treasurer in 1881. For thirteen years he has been a member of the order of Odd Fellows. For several years he has traveled extensively over the State, and after a careful investigation of the advantages of the different cities, gives it as his opinion that Sacramento is not excelled by any portion of the Golden State. If you want good health, go to the Eldred House and board - K street, above Tenth. Sid. Eldred, Proprietor.
