4 TH S E : I am the Good Shepherd. The image of the Good Shepherd is to be found in the catacombs long before we find representa ons of Jesus on the cross. Usually he is shown as a young man carrying a sheep across his shoulders. This image could also represent the pagan god Hermes carrying a sacrificial lamb and so the ambiguity made it acceptable in a me of persecu on. To a Chris an it would represent Christ. This statue e dates from about 300 AD and is in the Va can Museum. Later depic ons in mosaic show him as an adult with a flock of sheep or separa ng the sheep from the goats. To the shepherd, each sheep is an individual no ma er how hard someone else may find it to dis nguish between them. He will defend them with his own life. For the disciples, the image of the Good Shepherd would also have brought to mind David, the shepherd boy who became King. Jesus is the successor of David not only by descent and lineage but also in the model of kingship he sets out. However, it is only a er the Resurrec on that the disciples will understand what he meant by laying down his life and taking it up again. Christ laid down his life for you and for me so that we might not be lost. C : To Stephen Bownes and Carine Vergnes, married on Tuesday and to Charles William Anthony Pi and Isla Elizabeth Davis bap sed on Saturday. Congratula ons also go to Derek and Anne e Hand who celebrate their Silver Wedding this Saturday. Their Thanksgiving Mass is at Rayleigh, where they were married, and was due to be celebrated by Fr Andrew Dorrico, who officiated at their wedding, but his health does not permit this, and they have asked me to celebrate it in his place. This means that there will be no 10.00 a.m. Mass, Confessions or Exposi on this coming Saturday. There will, however, be the usual Triden ne Mass at 12.15 p.m. L S : Our series on the lives of the Saints con nues this Thursday 8.00 p.m. in St Dominic s Room,. S B C M : This week members of the Sion Community, who conducted our parish mission in 2010, will be leading a Mission for the students and staff at St Benedict s please do remember them in your prayers this week. You will be pleased to hear that despite the adverse effect of school transport charging the number of applica ons for St Benedict s has held up very well this year and in fact there are twenty five on the wai ng list! Parents are to be congratulated for the financial sacrifices they are making now that they will have to find up to 900 a year per child for transport. C M : Our annual official diocesan Mission appeal takes place next weekend and will be made on behalf of the Columban Missionary Fathers. P W E : at SION Community, Sawyers Hall Lane, Brentwood, will take place this month on Sunday, 29 th April 2012 7.30pm to 9.00pm. Everyone welcome. For those who can come earlier, there will be Adora on 7.00pm 7.30pm. P B : & Feering: The next prayer breakfast takes place this Saturday at URC 8.00 9.00 a.m. all welcome!

T S R C F : is part of the Diocesan Charity which is to help and support our re red and sick clergy when re red and/or sick. As a Charity we rely on the generosity of the Parishes and individual dona ons to keep the Fund in a healthy state. Another valuable means is by making a bequest in your Will; a Form of Bequest can be found on page 162 of the Brentwood Diocesan Directory. Your generosity through dona ons, the annual collec on and bequests is greatly appreciated. A : Please remember Nicholas Hoenich, Harry Knight, Tessa Bateson, Jason Dutch, Christopher Rolfe and Pamela Spencer whose anniversaries occur at this me. P N : Please con nue to pray for those parishioners who are sick especially Diane Ba en, Hayley Hetzel, Bill Sullivan, Trisha Parkin, Deborah Lee, Hilda Hawes, Pam Lowth, Hanni Kyan, Sheila Faulkner, Karen Kelly, Sarah Costello, Donovan Buahin, Mike Gibson, Rebecca Dillon, Brian Harper, Eddie Price, Anne Entwistle, Audrey Holder, Paul Bri ain, Audrey Hopwood and any unknown to us. If anybody knows of names to be added or deleted from the sick list please let Fr Gordon know. C Y W T : You will be pleased to hear that as a result of the interviews recently, a successor has been appointed to Hannah Cooper. He is Giuliano ( Jules ) Caprioli Blake and will be star ng work in tandem with Hannah at the beginning of May. Hannah will finish at the end of May prior to ordina on to ministry in the Church of England. I am sure that there will be an opportunity to celebrate all that she has achieved and to say goodbye and will let you know when details are finalised. There have been a number of applicants for the new post in and I will keep you posted on the interview process. E E M, C A A H : 18 20 May 2012. Helping you understand and explain the Catholic faith. In order to share our faith with others we need to be confident in being able to answer the ques ons that might come our way when we do! Working alongside other Chris ans in ecumenical mission, as we are preparing to do during the Olympics this summer, calls Catholics to be able to "give the reasons for the hope that they have" (1 Peter 3:15) to all those who ask them. The teachings will take into account ques ons about Mary, the Saints, the Authority of the Church, the role of the Pope and some of the Sacraments. The weekend aims to give you a simple scriptural basis from which to develop further personal studies but will equip you to engage in conversa ons with other Chris ans about these areas. SENT, Sawyers Hall Lane, Brentwood, Essex CM15 9BX. Cost: 95 (waged) / 75 (unwaged) per weekend. For further informa on or a booking form please contact our administrator on 01277 215011or e mail admin@sioncommunity.org.uk. C L : We would like to thank those who have volunteered to help with the children s ministry. We will be mee ng a er Mass next Sunday to discuss the format and formalise a rota. Although we now have 6 8 regular helpers, we invite all who would like to help but feel unable to make a permanent commitment. Ideally, the larger the number of volunteers the more occasional the commitment would be for everyone involved. Please, stay a er Mass for a cup of tea or coffee and learn how easy this job really is. Dads are par cularly welcome!

C ' P G : As we did last year, the children s prayer group invites everybody for tradi onal May devo ons to Our Lady, with a procession to the garden and Litany of Loreto on Mondays 4.00pm, church. This is straight a er school for the children and for adults it is s ll before dinner. A short but beau ful mee ng for all who love our Mum in heaven. BRES/CJSR L Trafficking Women: not for Sale will be given by Sr Lynda Dearlove, RSM, MBE, Director of Woman@ the Well Centre, Kings Cross on Thurs. 3rd May 7.30pm. BRES SUMMER L The Eucharist at the heart of Home, School and Parish will be given by Reverend Mar n Boland STL, MA on Thurs 10 th May 7.30pm. Both lectures will take place at Cathedral House Brentwood. Contact BRES: 01277 265285 or email mary cronin@dioceseo rentwood.org Cost: 5 F : The Offertory collec on for Sunday 22nd April 786.39. The Survive Miva appeal at all masses last week raised 311.70 (+ Gi Aid). The speaker hoped we might match the total from their last appeal 3 years ago. This came to 360+ so we are nearly there! Some folks took envelopes away last week and there are spares at each church for those who want to contribute (use gi aid number where appropriate) and thanks. O C K : Thursday evening 24th May. Posters and handbills should be ready any day now. Please try to come along to what is a "first" for the parish and bring your friends!! P L T : Spare copies of this free newspaper are available at each church; please help yourself. O A M F T : Thanks to all of you for your generous response to the Appeal made by Sean and Tom a month ago. Response has been good in terms of Standing Orders and those using envelopes. The first priority improvements to the decora on and parquet floor at have been completed already (Praise God!), and the Finance Team will consider the next steps when they meet shortly. If you do not currently use envelopes and want to join in or know more, please give your name to Fr. Gordon, and we will contact you. T : A er Rosary on Tuesday Gosia men oned a creature trapped in a small dry drainpipe next to the church wall. We could not release it. "Animal Rescue" were called and later the same day they shared the good news that they had managed to free the "big" hedgehog; it was well and they will keep an eye on it for a few days before releasing it back to the wild. We agreed to secure the loose fi ng drain cover!! Pity Fr Gerald is not here they don't have hedgehogs in Uganda and he has o en talked about never having seen a live one only imita ons in a garden centre! T E A : Adora on for Life begins again this week at 6.30pm followed by silent prayer from 7.30 to 8.30, all are welcome.
