2 Twenty-ninth Sunday in Ordinary Time October 18, 2015 From Our Pastor, Fr. Shawn Gould The Gospel and End of Life Decisions California recently became the fifth state to legalize assisted suicide. In this month dedicated to praying for an increase in the respect due to human life, I would like to clarify how the gospel of Jesus Christ applies to decisions we, as disciples, make with respect to end of life decisions. The first and most basic principle is that we can never intentionally shorten our lives or the lives of others. The Fifth Commandment prohibits murder, which is the intentional killing of an innocent human being. This prohibition applies to suicide and to assisting someone with suicide. A good act must be both good in itself and be done for a good intention. In the case of assisted suicide, many think that merely having the intention to reduce the suffering of another (which is a good intention) is enough to overcome the evil of the suicide itself. But a good intention doesn t change the goodness or evilness of an act. Murder does not become a good act because the person who commits it or assists with it believes there is a good reason to do so. The end never justifies the means. The means themselves the act itself must be good independently of the reason for doing the act. Committing suicide or assisting someone with suicide (which is always wrong) is different than withdrawing or refraining from using extraordinary means to prolong life. The Fifth Commandment prohibits us from directly shortening life; it does not require that we make every possible effort to prolong life, when natural causes are shortening life. Someone suffering terminally from cancer is not required to undergo all possible therapies (though he/she certainly may). We are not required to use a ventilator to keep us breathing. The ventilator can be removed and the natural process of dying allowed to continue. What about food and water for the unconscious? Can we withdraw those? No. Every human being who needs food and water has a right to food and water, if someone else has it and can spare it. A person who is unconscious has a right to food and water as long as his/her body can still make use of it and as long as it isn t unduly burdensome to the patient to provide it. The Church s teaching regarding end of life decisions may seem complex at times. If anyone has any further questions, I would be very happy to discuss them further. Update on the Organ As you can see, our organ has been installed and is now in the process of being tuned. The organ has several hundred pipes, each producing a separate note so the process of tuning after an initial installation takes some time. In order to comply with present code requirements, an extension to the loft s railing is being installed as well. The loft and organ should be ready for use before the end of the month. You may have noticed in the entryway a large organ pipe that has been turned into a bank. This is for donations to defray the cost of obtaining the new organ. Thank you for your generosity!

10 Twenty-ninth Sunday in Ordinary Time October 18, 2015 Public Square Rosary Crusade October 10, 2015 St. Bede Women s Club October is the month of Our Lady of the Rosary. Our meeting was started with a song and a procession of roses to the statue of Blessed Virgin. Father Simon Minyati came and talked to us about Our Blessed Mother and the rosary. We may have thought that we knew all about these subjects but we learned more and we were entertained as well. Father Simon is an excellent speaker. He is a Conventual Franciscan Friar from Kenya and is on sabbatical at Marytown. After the meeting, all the ladies went home with a rose. But before we left, there was time to take a few selfies with the Pope! Our next meeting is November 9 th and it is one of our annual favorites. We will have a flower demonstration by Sue Glashagel owner of Prunella s Flower Shoppe. Watch the bulletin for more details.

St. Bede Church Ingleside, IL 11 October 7, 2015 Pilgrimage to Holy Hill in Hubertus, Wisconsin Sponsored by St. Bede Women s Club What a beautiful day we had for our pilgrimage. The weather was perfect, the scenery was lovely, the food was good, and the company was friendly! On the feast day of Our Lady of the Rosary, forty-five men and women from St. Bede along with friends from neighboring parishes boarded the bus for a pilgrimage to Holy Hill in Hubertus, Wisconsin. We had time to roam the grounds and buildings. A few energetic people from the group climbed to the top of the Basilica steeple (176 stairs) for a gorgeous view of the surrounding area. The chapel to the Blessed Mother invited prayer. The statues and stained glass windows were beautiful to see with the sun shining through. The outdoor Stations of the Cross were awe inspiring but you had to be in shape to climb up the hill to see each one of them. Confessions were available, rosary was said before Mass, Mass was in the beautiful Basilica, then there was a talk on the history of Holy Hill. Our very own Father Shawn concelebrated the Mass. All of this was followed by a delicious lunch and more time to roam and shop. All in all it was a perfect day to celebrate the Feast of Our Lady of the Rosary! Rosary Ministry Open House After Masses in Coleman Hall Saturday, Oct. 24 after 5pm Mass Sunday, Oct. 25 after 7, 9 & 11am Mass Sweet Table Meet & Greet Make New Friends Rosary Making Demonstration!
