AUGUST 19/20, 2017 ST. ANDREW R.C. CHURCH PAGE 2 THE THEME Today s readings could not be more timely, given the political discourse regarding refugees and all those who are different from us-whether culturally, racially, economically, religiously or in any other way. In Scripture, we hear these questions: Who are worthy to be God s people? Who are worthy to hear the good news? The answers are that Israel is open to all; and the disciples are to be open to all. All are worthy in God s sight. The message for us could not be clearer. THE READINGS ISAIAH 56:1, 6-7: My house shall be called a house of prayer for all peoples. ROMANS 11:13-15, 29-32: Paul is called to bring the good news to the Gentiles. MATTHEW 15:21-28: Jesus responds to the outsider Canaanite woman. -SCHEDULE OF EVENTS - SATURDAY, AUGUST 26th, 2017 5:00 PM Mass Priest Fr. Manuel Lector S. Alter E.M. s R. Cipolla, V. Cipolla, J. AUGUST 19/20, 2017 ST. ANDREW R.C. CHURCH PAGE 3 From Fr. Peter s Desk 20th Sunday in Ordinary Time Dear Parish Family: On this Twentieth Sunday in Ordinary Time, we hear, in our First Reading, God inviting all people to come and share in the promises made to Israel. Not only the Jewish people, but everyone is invited to keep the covenant and enter God s house, which is open not to a single tribe, but to all people. Isaiah s vision should be our vision; God s house is a house of prayer for all peoples. In our Second Reading, St. Paul continues his reflection on the Jewish people-his people. He knows that Jesus is the source of salvation and he knows that God s promises are irrevocable. God s plan unfolds according to His will, not ours. The theme of today s Gospel, insiders and outsiders, runs through all of our readings today. Our Gospel story, about a Canaanite woman, an outsider, approaching Jesus to beg healing for her daughter, reveals to us Jesus call to all of us to reach out with love and compassion to all, especially those whom we might consider outsiders. My dear brothers and sisters, we are faced with quite a challenge in our readings of today. Accepting those that we consider unworthy of our compassion, attention or our borders. Opening our hearts to all of God s creation, no matter the color of their skin or where they are from. Of course, some people just are not ready, willing or open. However, our readings remind us that with Jesus, all are welcome. For all of us, according to St. Paul, are alike, made brothers and sisters by our shared streak of disobedience. If Jesus will have even us, then we are we to judge? God Bless You All, Fr. Peter STEWARDSHIP Stewardship Reflection In today s second reading, St. Paul tells the Romans, God s gift and His call are irrevocable. To what is God calling me today? What gifts are mine to share? Living Stewardship We are grateful this week for all stewards in our parish who recognize that each of us is uniquely gifted and each of us has our own special role in building the Kingdom.
