Is 8:23 -- 9:3; Ps 27:1, 4, 13-14; 1 Cor 1:10-13, 17; Mt 4:12-23 January 22, 2017 Rite of Acceptance into the Order of Catechumens Rite of Welcome by, Fr. Bosque What do you ask of God s Holy Church? With this question, we celebrate the first step, of the first rite (sometimes called Enrollment), of those unbaptized, and we express our welcome of our fellow baptized Christians on their journey towards full initiation at the Easter Vigil. This past Sunday, we received Alan Rubio, Tereza Milerova, Colette Lucidi-Valencia, and Giovanni Villalobos as catechumens; and we welcomed Christopher Rebelo, Monique Rashid-Salcedo, Kristen Miller, Sydney Nettles, and Deborah Chadwick as we formally joined with them, and their journey (our journey) to Easter Joy in Heaven. The Rite of Christian Initiation for A dults (RCIA) speaks about the importance of faith as a journey. Faith in the Lord, belonging to His Church, is not a matter of knowing things, but experiencing God s love revealed in a Person, Christ. This is not to suggest the Catholic faith does not involve revealed truth (things to learn), and rituals (ways of celebrating and passing on those truths), but the essential quality of the faith is coming to know Christ in and through others, the Church. This journey begins as inquirers men and women who are interested in the Catholic Church, the Catholic faith approach the Church for reflection. After a period of exploration, the unbaptized are invited to become catechumens (anointed with the Oil of Catechumens), at which point they are part of our community (with rights to be married as Catholics, or whose funerals are celebrated in our Church). Those who are baptized, and wish to continue their journey towards becoming fullyinitiated Catholics, are welcomed by the parish community as one of our fellow sisters and brothers. The importance of journey, coming to experience Christ WITHIN the Church, is clearly expressed with the words of the Gospel: Whoever loves me will be loved by my Father, and I will love him and reveal myself to him (see John 14:15-21). This journey is so important that the RCIA recommends the Order of Catechumens begin during Lent or Easter, with the journey celebrated the following Easter Vigil (though our inquirers may complete their journey at this year s Vigil, while some may choose to wait). The Rites must be celebrated during the Sunday Mass, so the entire community is not just present, but an active participant in embracing the lives of those adults who are expressing an openness to celebrating (and living) the Easter Sacraments.
