Second Sunday of Easter (Divine Mercy Sunday) March 30, 2008 "Blessed are those who have not seen and have believed." - John 20:29b FINDING THE BIBLE IN THE DESERT. St. Katherine Orthodox Monastery is at the foot of Mt. Sinai (see photo on last page of the bulletin) in the desert near the Red Sea between Israel and Egypt. There, a priceless manuscript lay unread and totally unappreciated. Some manuscript pages had found their way into a waste basket. Since no originals of the Bible are in existence, any early manuscripts are invaluable in the quest for a true and authentic biblical text from which translations can be made. In 1844, German Count Constantin von Tischendorf, upon visiting the monastery while exploring the Middle East, saw these pages and recognized their possible value. Fifteen years later, in 1859, sent by Tsar Alexander II of Russia, Tischendorf returned to St. Katherine and was shown a full manuscript in codicil form, that is, in book form as opposed to a scroll. This document has since been named the Codex Sinaiticus and its contents are believed to date back to the fourth century, around the time of the great Saint Jerome, who is responsible for the bible known as the Latin Vulgate. The monks felt honored and privileged to place the document into the hands of the Tsar by means of his emissary.tsar Alexander in turn recognized their generosity and remunerated them accordingly. In 1933 Communist Russia, short of cash, sold the valuable document to Britain. One source says the cost was 100,000 pounds sterling, another says 25 million American dollars. The price was probably some figure in between. Since that time, the British Museum in London has become its permanent home. Along with the Codex Vaticanus, which is also nearly a complete biblical text of the same era, the Codex Sinaiticus is reputed to be one of the best and most accurate copies of the Bible in existence. As noted above, no original biblical texts are known to exist. Whatever we have are later copies of copies (of copies, etc.) many of which were copied by monks in early times. The very earliest fragment (scrap?), the size of a credit card, is dated no earlier than 125 A.D. It is known as the "#457 Rylands Papyrus" and it rests in the John Rylands Library in Manchester, England. The importance of this fragment is that its early date virtually assures us that John's, the last of the Gospels, was written no later than the final decades of the first century. - Father George 2008 Catholic Ministries Annual Appeal Diocese of Joliet Sign-Up Weekend, April 12/13, 2008 -tr~"" oo Catholic Ministries...Annua[...Appea[ Each year we ask you to support the Catholic Ministries Annual Appeal of the Diocese of Joliet.
