FINCHLEY PROGRESSIVE SYNAGOGUE 5777 2016 May we be inscribed in the Book of Life and Blessing for a life of goodness and peace

With all good wishes for a sweet and happy New Year and well over the Fast שנה טובה ומתוקה May 5777 be a strong and a good year. May we find the energy to show love and care for those close to us and those outside of our family. Despite the uncertainty of the world around, let it find us yet more committed to create comfort and certainty in our communities. May we manage the challenges that present themselves and throughout may we find happiness and health. from Rabbi Rebecca Birk Emeritus Rabbi Dr Frank Hellner Life President: Sheila King-Lassman, President: Alan Banes Chairperson: Alex Kinchin-Smith together with the Vice-Presidents, the Council and staff of Finchley Progressive Synagogue 54 HUTTON GROVE, FINCHLEY, LONDON, N12 8DR TELEPHONE: 020 8446 4063 EMAIL: administrator@fps.org www.finchleyprogressivesynagogue.org 2

PREPARING FOR THE HIGH HOLYDAYS SATURDAY 24 SEPTEMBER 7.30-9.45 pm We will begin the evening with a concert featuring David and Abigail Dolan playing a programme of meditative music for flute and piano by Bach, Mozart and Schubert. This will be followed by the Selichot service which is in your Machzor, so please bring it with you. Selichot provides an opportunity to prepare physically, emotionally, religiously and musically for the High Holy Days through penitential poems and prayers. God s Thirteen Attributes of Mercy are a central theme throughout these prayers. Walk Into A Better Year: join Rabbi Rebecca for 10 days of Mindful Walking into the New Year with a verse each day for reflection. Meet in front of Kenwood House at 9.30 am from Tuesday 4 October to Monday 10 October. Who can say, I have purified my heart, I am free of sin? Proverbs 20:9 3

IMPORTANT! Congregants are reminded that they need to purchase and bring their own copies of our High Holyday prayer book Machzor Ruach Chadash for traditional services. We have a few copies for visitors but these are not available for members. Please use the form at the end of this booklet to purchase a copy if you do not have one. It will be kept at the synagogue for you to collect either before, or during the HHD period. Thank you 4

TRANSPORT AND PARKING During the daytime, parking restrictions will be in force on Hutton Grove and the surrounding streets. Parking in the synagogue car park is reserved for those with restricted mobility who have telephoned the office to request an FPS car park permit. However, as we usually receive a large number of requests, having a permit does not guarantee you a parking place. We strongly encourage members to walk or use other methods of transport. If you need a lift, we will try to find you one. SECURITY Following CST guidelines, security will be at an extremely high level this year. Your understanding in assisting our security volunteers would be very much appreciated. To avoid delays, please bring your 2016 HHD ticket for every service and be ready to show it whenever requested. OFFERS OF HELP There s always a need for extra help before and during the festivals and if you can volunteer your services, please call the office on 0208 446 4063 or email pauline@fps.org or gabrielwebber@fps.org Get in touch if You have not been allocated a security slot and can spare an hour or so. You can help for a couple of hours in the office during the busy holiday period. You have space in your car and can offer a lift to someone who lives near you or has difficulty in getting to synagogue. Can help preparing any of the festival kiddushim Erev or Morning services. You are not obligated to complete the work, but neither are you free to desist from it Pirkey Avot 5
