EASTER I am writing this article on the first day of Spring. The time of year is much more a part of the story of Easter than you might think. Words like Lent and Easter are not Greek or Hebrew or even Latin, their origin is Celtic they describe the seasons. Lent having to do with the lengthening of the day and Easter the coming of Spring. Both of which are reflected in their use in the church calendar. Yet the date of Easter, the Churches highest holy day, is much more tied to the biblical narrative that put the date of the resurrection in relation to the Jewish Passover, a seminal date in Jewish history. It celebrates the exodus out of Egypt and the creation of a new relationship with God. "Easter, the term we use for the day resurrection marks a new relationship with God. On Palm Sunday Jesus entered Jerusalem to assert his kingship of God's people he tried to explain the meaning of his presence among them. We like our Jewish neighbors bring this to mind at this time of the year for them the deliverance out of slavery in Egypt, for us deliverance out of sin and our entrance not into an earthly kingdom but a heavenly one. Indeed the message of Jesus that the kingdom of God is here is confirmed on the cross and in the resurrection. We who follow Jesus should be there to welcome him as our king on Palm Sunday to share with him the meal of remembrance and the suffering of "Good Friday" in order for us to find the fullness of the joy of the resurrection. This Holy Week we share in the great high feast, come take your place at the table.
