1 Emmaus Lutheran Church April, 2017 Now after the Sabbath, toward the dawn of the first day of the week, Mary Magdalene and the other Mary went to see the tomb. Matthew 28:1 Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ Jesus, Hindsight being 20/20, we have every reason to be optimistic about the story of the resurrection. Reading Matthew s account, we know what will happen next. Luke s account, in the final verses of chapter twenty-three, suggests the emotion of Jesus disciples, as they saw the tomb and how His body was laid in it. Their Teacher and Friend had died upon the cross. Then they returned and prepared spices and ointment. Proper burial of the dead was a matter of great importance to people in Bible times. To paraphrase, He had forth told them that the Son of Man must suffer many things, from the elders, chief priests and the scribes, and be killed, and on the third day be raised (Matthew 16:21, 17:22-23, 20:18-19). But the message of being raised on the third day was never really received by the disciples. In all that had happened, their minds are in somewhat of a fog. There is a story of the Battle of Waterloo, Great Britain against France. While the battle between the Duke of Wellington and the Emperor Napoleon had been imminent, results of such battle would not have been easy to send. In 1815, the telegraph was not yet available. Instead the news came from a sailing ship which semaphored news to a signalman atop of Winchester Cathedral, who in turn signaled to another man on a hill. Thus, news of the battle was relayed by hand semaphore from station to station to London and across England. When the ship came in, the signalman on board semaphored the first word Wellington. The next word was defeated, and then the fog came down and the ship could not be seen. Wellington defeated went across England, and there was great gloom over the countryside. After two or three hours, the fog was lifted, and the signal came again: Wellington defeated the enemy. Then all England rejoiced. There was that day, when in the eyes of the world put the body of our Lord Jesus Christ into the tomb. Men might have said and thought, everything is ended, all is gone, sin and Satan have conquered. But then in three days, the fog was lifted. Jesus Christ rose from the dead. The truth has come down ever since and Jesus has defeated the enemy. In His grace, Pastor Kern Pastor David W. Martin Luther was not only a theologian, but a pastor actively engaged in the care of souls. Written by the Rev. Dr. John Pless, the book uses selected letters to present evidence of Luther s application evangelical theology, for which he explains the approach on spiritual counsel by which faith is centered upon Christ alone, the theology of the cross, and the Word and Sacrament ministry as the Means of Grace is truly what the pastor then has to offer. You may view this book, on display in the parish hall throughout the month of April.
3 Word Puzzle THE RESURRECTION (MATTHEW 28:1 10) (2) Now after the Sabbath, toward the dawn of the first day of the week, Mary Magdalene and the other Mary went to see the tomb. And behold, there was a great earthquake, for an angel of the Lord descended from heaven and came and rolled back the stone and sat on it. His appearance was like lightning, and his clothing white as snow. And for fear of him the guards trembled and became like dead men. But the angel said to the women, Do not be afraid, for I know that you seek Jesus who was crucified. He is not here, for he has risen, as he said. Come, see the place where he lay. Then go quickly and tell his disciples that he has risen from the dead, and behold, he is going before you to Galilee; there you will see him. See, I have told you. So they departed quickly from the tomb with fear and great joy, and ran to tell his disciples. And behold, Jesus met them and said, Greetings! And they came up and took hold of his feet and worshiped him. Then Jesus said to them, Do not be afraid; go and tell my brothers to go to Galilee, and there they will see me. (ESV) PAGE 3.
