December Awards updates - Congratulations to all our award winners announced and or recognized this week at our December 14th general meeting! Our November Knight of the Month is Obioma Opara. Our December Knight of the Month is Keith Barker. Our December Family of the Month is Stephanie Tierney and the entire St. Thomas a'becket Youth Group. Finally, our council was recognized for having achieved the Columbian Award for fraternal year 2015/2016. Again, congrats to all our winners and a huge "thank you" for all you do for our council and our parish! (Keith was unable to attend, so he will receive his award at a future meeting.)

Pancake Breakfast committee - The December 10th Breakfast with Santa event went off without a hitch, thanks to those brothers who volunteered to work this important parish event for us. Thanks for your help and training the Youth Group kids doing the cooking and serving! A picture of most, but not all, of our crew working that day is below. Our next regular council breakfast will be January 8th. Holy Family Icon - Msgr Kern Council #8284 will be receiving the traveling Holy Family Icon next month (January 11-17). Watch our Facebook page or our website for more information on special prayer services and displays that will occur during that time. More information to follow.

Kern Council Christmas party - Msgr Kern Council enjoyed a wonderful family Christmas party on Sunday, December 11th! The snow storm that night was just starting, so the weather wasn't too bad for us. Thanks to all who attended and those who put this year's party together for us to make it such a nice event! Here are a few pics from our fun time that night!

Culture of Life - Chairman George Peters is interested in forming a Culture of Life committee to consider activities that our council can participate in going forward. He is looking for 3 or 4 brothers to volunteer. If you are interested in participating, let George or GK David Lengel know. Keep Christ in Christmas poster contest - Our 2nd annual kids poster contest touting the Keep Christ in Christmas theme comes to an end this week with the judging of all entries. We will announce winners and show the winning entires in next month s newsletter and on our social media sites (Facebook and webpage). Charity Poker update - Our next poker fundraiser is February 16-19 at Vision Lanes in Westland. We received some initial volunteer sign-up s at our December meeting, but you can sign up now just by letting Ed Harkins (edward.harkins@gmail.com) know what date and time you can do. Please consider assisting if you are able to do so. Thanks.

Other December Council meeting news - Present membership is 170; we have 4 new members towards our overall goal of 11 this year, and 3 of our 4 insurance members. A sizable financial donation of $1,022 came from our Christmas party, we also donated 27 pounds of food to the local food bank after can collections at this event as well. The January 18th blood drive we re supporting is at St. John Neumann. A $200 donation was approved for the Capuchin Soup Kitchen. STAB Youth Group will doing a Soup Supper on March 24th and support from the Knights has been requested. The new parish liquor policy was discussed as was our council s insurance coverage for host liquor types of activities. The council Free Throw contest will be January 22nd, help will be needed. We will also be hosting the District Free Throw contest at a date to be determined. Our 1st card night of 2017 will be Jan 27th. Upcoming Council Birthdays - As a regular feature in our newsletter, we are listing council member birthdays for the next month so you can wish your brothers a special Happy Birthday if you like! Following are our January council birthdays: Happy Birthday: Dennis Thinel (1/3), Jack Bocik (1/4), Bernard Schwartz (1/10), Antonio Calderoni (1/13), Andrew St. Peter (1/15), Timothy Magers (1/16), Alex Brown (1/16), David Darkowski (1/17), Eric Pawlus (1/18), Michael Felsburg (1/23), Robert Craighead (1/24), Tom Rhein (1/26), In Memoriam - We also wish to honor our council brothers who have preceded us in death by remembering the date that they went back home to the Lord. These are the brothers we have recognized on our council memorial plaque as well. For the month of January, we want to recognize the following brothers: Robert Sultana - 1/18/2006 Wayne Buchanec - 1/12/2010 Eternal rest grant unto them O Lord, and let perpetual light shine upon them. May they rest in peace. Amen. Let us pray - Please remember the following in your prayers.
