SIXTH SUNDAY OF EASTER PAGE 3 MAY 1, 2016 On the Same Page Dear Friends, Next Sunday, May 8, we will celebrate the Solemnity of the Ascension of Our Lord. If you Rev. Denis B. Theroux, Pastor remember, a number of years ago, the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops, made the decision The Sixth Sunday of Easter that, for pastoral reasons, a Diocese could move the Solemnity from a Thursday to a Sunday. The reality of Jesus Ascension is so important that the creeds of Christian Communities all affirm, in the words of the Apostles' Creed, that "He ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead and his kingdom will have no end. The denial of the Ascension is as grave a departure from ChrisYan teaching as is denial of Christ's ResurrecYon. Jesus bodily Ascension foreshadows our own entrance into Heaven not simply as souls, a^er our death, but as glorified bodies, a^er the resurrecyon of the dead at the Final Judgment. In redeeming humankind, Jesus not only offered salvayon to our souls but began the restorayon of the material world itself to the glory that God intended before Adam's fall. Next weekend, we also will begin our annual celebrafons with our children receiving the Eucharist for the First Time! With the number of children that we have receiving Eucharist this year, we will have four Masses for this special event. As I have done over the past years, this again, I share with you some memories of First Communion! The following remembrances were wriuen in an arycle that I read in America Magazine in 2004. I enjoyed them, and hope that you will enjoy too! The morning of my first Communion, I remember waking up at 4 o clock and waking up my mother. She said, Elissa, it s four o clock! We don t have to get up yet. I said, But Mommy, if I get ready now, I can get to receive Communion sooner. The sisters taught us that this was really Jesus. It was a very excimng moment in my life. [Years later, aper I had abandoned religion] a friend invited me to a retreat with her church community, and the experience I had in my first Communion came back. Everything flooded back. Christ was real. God was real. And you finally understood that God loved you. Last year my niece was geung ready to make her first Communion. About three weeks before, we were at Mass together and she walked up to communion with me and held my hand. When we got to the back of the church she grabbed my arm and she said, Aunt Claudia, I can t wait for my Communion! It really flashed back to my own sense of I want this, I can t wait for this. I remember my first Communion very well. In those days we had to fast from midnight. And the sisters used to cover the water fountains in school so the kids wouldn t take a drink by mistake before Mass in the morning to remind you, you know, in case Sister wasn t looking and you wandered down the hall, you d bever not take a drink. Things like that seem funny now, though they were so very, very important to us. You really wanted to do it right. Reprinted with permission America Magazine by Carole Garibaldi Rogers. All are welcome to attend and participate at the level they are comfortable. Due to First Communion Masses in May, our next meeting will be Sunday, May 15. This support group provides a confidential place to process your thoughts, and to share information and experiences. Those attending may be living with Alzheimer's disease themselves, giving care to another or may have relatives or friends who have Alzheimer's disease or other related dementia. Jesus assures them that he will send the Holy Spirit who will help them continue the Kathryn Ling, Pastoral message of love. We sing O Breathe on Me Breath of Associate God in anticipation of the coming of the Holy Spirit Today, we celebrate the Sixth Sunday in Easter. It calling for the strength to walk the way of love. The word is difficult to believe that we are coming near to the end of breath or wind in Hebrew of Greek is used for the word spirit. In this hymn, we are asking the Holy Spirit to breathe renewal of life in the Easter Season. During the Easter Season, our first reading has come the Book of Acts, the second volume of Luke s Gospel. After the Feast of Pentecost, our first reading will return to the Old Testament. The following reflection is taken from Foundations for Preaching and Teaching 2016, from Liturgy Training Publications. Sometimes it takes a while for Church leaders to catch up with what God is doing among them. And, when it comes to a matter of great contention, even the saints may disagree about the details of what has happened. Thus, Luke s account of the Apostolic Council in Jerusalem in Acts 15:1-35 agree only in part with Galatians 2:1-14, Paul s rendition of the same events. The narrative we hear today from Acts, recounts what theologian Karl Rahner called one of the three key moments in the life of the Church. (The first was the events of the Life-Death-Resurrection of Jesus and the third was the Second Vatican Council which for the first time, brought representatives of the whole Catholic world together to discern authoritatively God s will for their time.) Our reading is actually an abbreviated account, stating the problem and its solution while skipping over the actual meeting at which it was debated and the gathered Church discerned the will of God. The problem was that some, acting without the full backing of the community, demanded that converts become fully-practicing Jews, expressed and symbolized by circumcision. The key to the solution was that the faithful gathered and listened to one another s experience of God working among them. Once they could appreciate God s presence in their diverse mission experiences, they could come to such an agreement that they described by saying. It is the decision of the Holy Spirit and of us... That is an absolutely astounding statement either the product of unmitigated presumption or its opposite, a profound belief that God was showing them a way beyond their own opinions or preferences. Their faith conviction, and the evidence Luke gives for it, was based on the fact that they did not hide from conflict, that no one claimed absolute authority, and they were willing to let their opinions be changed. Karl Rahner asserted that because they followed the lead of the Spirit, Christianity became a world religion instead of restricting itself to being a sect of first-century Judaism. I used this reflection because it talks about being open to truly listening to another person s experience and being open to possibility of changing our opinion. So often we hear the person but do not listen and we have already made up our mind that their thoughts, experiences can not have value and worth. If the first disciples had held to their opinion or belief WE would not be here. Christ into us. This hymn was written by Edwin Hatch, a very learned and scholarly man, who had a sincere and pure devotion to the Holy Spirit. The simple single syllable text belies the education of Hatch who was a lecturer of ecclesiastical history at Oxford and professor of classics at Trinity College in Quebec, Canada. Hatch contributed only a few hymns to hymnody, but Breathe on Me Breath of God has been published in hundreds of hymnals since 1878. The original hymn tune was TRENTHAM composed by Robert Jackson, named after a town in Staffordshire, England, but our version is set to ST. COLUMBA. Kathy Sanderson, Music Director OLV HEALTH & WELLNESS MINISTRY Allergies Source: Living Right-Your Health and Wellness Awareness BulleMn, April, 2016. J. J. Allergies are an overreacyon of the immune system to substances that do not affect other individuals. These substances, called allergens, can cause sneezing, coughing, and itching. The strongest risk factor for developing allergies is family history. A child is more likely to develop allergies if one or both parents have them. An allergic reacyon can occur a^er exposure to a number of common substances. Pollen, mold and dust may cause hay fever, which brings about sneezing, a stuffy nose and itchy eyes. Similar symptoms may occur when a person who is allergic to animal dander comes into contact with cats or dogs. Chain ReacFon Allergic reacyons occur when the body s immune system mistakes an otherwise harmless substance for an invader. The body overreacts and goes into auack mode, releasing chemicals that bring about allergy symptoms: This reacyon has its beginnings in the sensiyzayon stage: An encounter with an allergen causes a change in the immune system. The body marks the allergen as dangerous and anybodies are developed to detect it. The immune system is now ready to react the next Yme exposure occurs. When the allergen enters the body, special cells are acyvated. These cells trigger the release of histamine, leukotrienes, and other chemicals, bringing about a runny, stuffy and itchy nose and throat, mucous, cough and wheezing. Eczema can be linked to allergies Allergies do more than make a person sneeze and cough. They have also been associated with a chronic, itchy skin rash. Eczema, or atopic dermayys, is a skin condiyon with symptoms including dry, itchy skin and rashes behind the knees, on the hands and feet, inside the elbows and on the face. Symptoms might change over Yme, as the rash flares up and then improves. Eczema is most common in babies and children, and a child with parents who have seasonal allergies is more likely to develop the condiyon. A child with eczema is more likely to develop food allergies, asthma, and hay fever. Certain irritants (such as soaps, cleaners, perfumes and cigareue smoke) and allergens (including dust mites, mold and pollen) can make eczema worse. A person may get contact eczema when the skin touches an allergy-causing substance. While there is no test to check for eczema, your doctor may recommend you be tested for allergies by a dermatologist or allergist. Easing eczema: Stay away from triggers, such as scented soaps or perfumes. Use moisturizer, a^er a shower or bath. Soothe itchy skin with a cold compress. Choose clothing made from couon.

We are working hard on reading and writing skills, and learning about money and measuring in math. Science is especially awesome this time of year! We are studying plants and animals, and learning what plants need in order to grow. We planted sunflower seeds and predicted how long it will take for them to sprout. We are waiting for caterpillars to arrive, so we can learn more about that big word-metamorphosis-as we observe how the caterpillars make a complete change into butterflies. During Earth Week, we learned how to take care of this beautiful planet God gave us. Picking up litter, recycling, and turning the water off when we brush, are all ways we can help the earth. We are learning to be responsible kindergartners by finding lots of ways to take care of all the gifts God gave us. Registration for Faith Formation 2016-2017 Registration for next year s program will begin next month. This is a little later than usual as we accommodate a change in the program we use to track our families, scheduling, volunteers, etc. The program will begin the week of Monday, September 12. CLOW and Christ the Good Shepherd Preschool program will begin October 2. We service families with 3 1/2 to 5 year old students during our Sunday, 9:30 a.m. preschool program, students in grades one through eight during either the Monday at 4:45-6:00 p.m. or 6:30-7:45 p.m., and Tuesday from 4:45-6:00 p.m. sessions. In addition we will be offering the Christ the Good Shepherd program on Mondays from 4:45-6:00 p.m., in the atrium for all four and five year olds! If you have not previously been in the Faith Formation program, we invite you to call our office so that we can enter you into our email distribution list. This will assure you of timely registration information in June. If you have a child who has not been baptized, received First Communion or not been in Faith Formation and are hoping to be Confirmed in the eighth grade, call the Faith Formation Office. We can assist you and your family in placing them in the program, catch them up with their peers and prepare them to celebrate the sacraments! Scripture Reflection In this weekend s gospel, Jesus is helping his disciples to understand that even though he would be leaving them soon, they would never be alone. He would send them someone the Advocate, the Holy Spirit, who would teach them everything and remind them of all that he had taught. It is hard to imagine that Jesus followers knew what was in store for them. The commitment to follow in his way would take them beyond anything they could fathom. It would bring joy, challenges, hardship, and in some cases even death. but above all peace. With the help of the Spirit, they remained true to the call and in the end true to their best self. MINUTE Ministerial Certification Chew and Chat, an introduction to the liturgical musician certification process, will be held at Sacred Heart Major Seminary this Wednesday, May 4. Those who devote themselves to professional ministry in the Archdiocese of Detroit have an obligation to proper formation and education. Gifts to the Catholic Services Appeal support the work of the Christian Worship Office, which coordinates the formation and certification of liturgical musicians in collaboration with the Department of Evangelization, Catechesis and Schools. It is not any easier in today s world to navigate through the many situations faced in everyday living. It is especially hard for children. They are faced with too many influences that make the decision making difficult at best. Should they stand up for those who are belittled or remain in solidarity with their friends? Do they take the short cuts that provide instant gratification and glory or take the long road that brings lifelong advantage? Parental influence is of the utmost importance in helping children know that there is a different way. A way of life that values love over division, justice over greed and the recognition that Jesus is to be found in the face of every person you meet. How are we to find the perseverance to search for his way every day? That for us as a people of faith rests and relies upon the help of the Holy Spirit. As parents, let the Spirit guide and inform the decisions you make for yourself and your children. Model what is possible! Jesus is there to help and will love you every step of the way! At the time of my first imprisonment, I was from Indiana and did not know a soul in Michigan. All of my family was at least three and a half hours away. I was not only scared but I was terribly alone. The volunteer told my friend to add her name to my list of approved visitors...gosh what list. I had none. However, I started a list with her name on it. She gave me hope when I had none. I can't begin to tell you how lonely and forgotten we prisoners can feel at times. Some of the prisoners have family but even they stop coming eventually. Many of the inmates are less fortunate and time here becomes unbearable. The walls close in and it is so frightening without someone to bring hope and talk about God's presence, love and forgiveness. Someone to tell me God cares. Often that is all we need to know.
