A WORD FROM OUR PASTOR One of my simple pleasures in life is when, in October, I go to the local Super Target to do my grocery shopping. After filling my cart with all the essentials such as yogurt and potato chips, I wheel my way through the Halloween display. I love Halloween. I love everything about it: the autumn leaves, the pumpkins, the ghosts, the candy, the evil. But I never buy anything. I just enjoy seeing all the Halloween decorations -- grinning Jack O' Lanterns, skeletons and assorted bones. I especially like skeletons because they are the only people skinnier than me. But even as I enjoy the Halloween items on display, I notice the encroachment. Just behind the candy and the pumpkins, lurking along the back wall, are the Christmas decorations. They are just waiting to come out. In fact, they cannot wait. Even as Halloween grows closer, Christmas begins to push past the skeletons and take over the entire display. Of course, this is nothing new. Now that we have passed Halloween, there is nothing holding back Christmas, and retailers cannot wait to begin their biggest, most profitable time of the year. Now the competition begins. It used to be that the Christmas shopping season officially began the day after Thanksgiving. Someone, unfortunately, dubbed that day Black Friday because it is the day that the retailers hope to see their profits pass the red line of budget deficit and push into the black-ink realm of profit. Every retailer wants to make a profit, and every merchant knows that there is plenty of competition. So one retailer decides to beat the other guys and have a Black Thursday sale. That's right. You can finish -- or even skip -- Thanksgiving dinner and begin your Christmas shopping before everyone else. Of course, we all know where that ends up. Another merchant has a Black Wednesday sale, and another has a Black Tuesday sale. I think I even saw a Black Labor Day sale back in September. Now, I am not complaining. I used to get annoyed at this, but I am too gray to be bothered by that anymore. Rather, I enjoy knowing that we have beaten them all. All the retailers are late. All the merchants have missed the ever-advancing starting line. That is because here at Divine Infant, it is always Christmas. Maybe now that our society is beginning to exploit Christmas it is easier to notice it, but it is always Christmas at Divine Infant. When you park in the lot between church and school, notice the words on the school: Gloria in Excelsis Deo. This is the song the angels sang on the first Christmas. As you walk in the front doors, notice the angel Gabriel, herald of the Incarnation, beckoning all to enter. When you step into the nave of the church, let your eyes dwell on the huge window over the altar. That great window is a luminous nativity set complete with the Christ child, his God-bearing Mother, Joseph her spouse, shepherds, and plenty of sheep. Perhaps because we see these things all the time we do not take much notice of them, but they are the images of Christmas, and they surround us every day of the year. It is always Christmas at Divine Infant, So as the Christmas shopping season begins to rev up, remember that you have that for which the retailers long. You have Christmas every day of the year. Every time you come to church, you are entering into the house of our patron, the Christ Child, and you are surrounded by the mystery of his Incarnation and Nativity. Pay attention to that. Even as our culture demands that we focus on shopping and decorating, notice what our church shows us -- that God is incarnated in the world every day of the year. The Christ child is always present to us, surrounding us, and inviting us into his home so that we can know his love and the love of his heavenly Father. If you will not be using those cards, I can use them. I collect, sort, and bundle them and give them to people in jail or prison. (The chaplains love to get them to distribute!) I cannot use any cards that say things like You will be remembered in Masses or prayers There is a basket in the vestibule of church to deposit them. Please do not put the cards inside the envelopes. All year long I appreciate Catholic magazines, such as Liguorian, St. Anthony Messenger and Catholic Digest; Also the magazine Guideposts. Other magazines that are appreciated are those like Popular Mechanics and Scientific American. I also send used paperback books to people in prison. If you have any that are suitable for men inprison (no romance novels), and no longer want them, I will be happy to receive and then send them.
